How did the early Galaxy S phones establish Samsung’s flagship line?
The original Galaxy S provided the basic formula that Samsung continued to refine: a premium Android smartphone built around a high-quality AMOLED display, slim hardware, Samsung silicon in at least some regions, and a name that could scale into a family.
Samsung’s official retrospective identifies the first Galaxy S as a June 4, 2010 global release with a Super AMOLED display, a 9.9 mm body, and an Exynos 3110 processor. Regional versions could differ in processor, radio support, naming, and availability, so those specifications should not be treated as universal for every market. Read Samsung’s official five-year Galaxy S retrospective for the historical context.
2011: Galaxy S II made the line thinner and faster
The Galaxy S II moved Samsung’s flagship formula toward higher performance and broader global competition. Samsung’s product announcement described a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, dual-core processing, an 8-megapixel rear camera, and an 8.49 mm body. Samsung’s announcement date was June 30, 2011, while Samsung’s later retrospective places the release in April; the difference illustrates why market-specific launch dates matter.
According to Samsung’s corporate announcement in 2011, the Galaxy S II had sold more than 10 million units by the end of 2011. The sales figure was a Samsung-reported result, not an independent market measurement.
2012: Galaxy S III turned a successful flagship into a global phenomenon
The Galaxy S III reached the market in May 2012 and broadened the appeal of the S family beyond a specification contest. Samsung emphasized the phone’s pebble-inspired design, 4.8-inch display, user-focused software features, and improved camera.
According to Samsung’s 2015 Galaxy S retrospective, the Galaxy S III sold more than 40 million units within seven months, while combined Galaxy S sales had passed 100 million. Those figures explain why the S III is better understood as the line’s mass-market breakthrough rather than merely its next annual upgrade.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2013: Galaxy S4 expanded hardware and software features
The Galaxy S4 continued rapid growth with a thinner, lighter design, a 5-inch Full HD Super AMOLED display, and a larger battery. Samsung also used the S4 to showcase software features including Smart Scroll, Smart Pause, Group Play, S Health, and S Translator.
According to Samsung’s 2015 retrospective, the Galaxy S4 sold 10 million units in its first month and more than 40 million in six months. Samsung’s figures are manufacturer-reported sales milestones and should not be confused with independently audited sell-through data.
2014: Galaxy S5 added durability, biometrics, and health hardware
The Galaxy S5 was announced at Samsung Unpacked in February 2014 and became globally available on April 11, 2014. The generation concentrated on practical capabilities: an improved camera, faster connectivity, a fingerprint scanner, fitness tools, a heart-rate monitor, and IP67 water-and-dust resistance.
Samsung’s retrospective also identifies the Galaxy S5 as the first Galaxy S device launched simultaneously in 150 countries. The simultaneous-launch claim describes Samsung’s rollout strategy; exact sales and hardware availability still varied by country.
Why were the Galaxy S6, S7, S8, and S9 important design milestones?
The 2015–2018 generations changed the Galaxy S line’s physical identity more dramatically than the preceding annual upgrades. Samsung moved from a practical, removable-feature-oriented design toward glass and metal, curved screens, edge-to-edge displays, software assistants, desktop-style use, and more specialized camera hardware.
2015: Galaxy S6 and S6 edge reset the design
Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge on March 1, 2015. The generation introduced metal-and-glass construction to the flagship family and produced the first dual-edge curved display in the Galaxy S line through the S6 edge.

The S6 generation also marked the first Galaxy S family support for wireless charging and Samsung Pay, according to Samsung’s innovation history. The design reset made the phones feel more premium, although the important historical point is the change in direction: the flagship line began prioritizing materials, curved display technology, and Samsung’s payments ecosystem alongside conventional performance upgrades.
2016: Galaxy S7 and S7 edge refined the practical experience
The Galaxy S7 generation returned to and refined several practical features while preserving the S6 family’s premium design language. Samsung highlighted IP68 water-and-dust resistance, a hybrid Nano SIM/microSD slot, and a dual-pixel image sensor described as a first for the series.

The standard Galaxy S7 and curved-screen S7 edge showed Samsung testing how much of the flagship identity should be shared and how much should be reserved for a larger or more visually distinctive variant. The Samsung Galaxy S innovation retrospective connects the S6 and S7 changes with the line’s broader display and camera evolution.
2017: Galaxy S8 and S8+ began the Infinity Display era
The Galaxy S8 and S8+ were introduced on March 29, 2017, and released in select global markets on April 21. Their edge-to-edge, bezel-minimized Infinity Displays became the most recognizable change, but the S8 generation also removed physical navigation keys in favor of on-screen buttons.
The S8 generation introduced Bixby to the Galaxy S line and brought Samsung DeX into the S ecosystem. Bixby represented Samsung’s move toward an integrated voice and software assistant, while DeX attempted to make a Galaxy S phone useful as the center of a desktop-like workspace when paired with the relevant accessories and display setup.
2018: Galaxy S9 and S9+ focused on camera refinement
Samsung introduced the Galaxy S9 and S9+ at Galaxy Unpacked on February 25, 2018, with global availability beginning March 16. The phones preserved much of the S8 design rather than replacing it with another radical form.
The camera-focused additions included a variable-aperture camera and Super Slow-mo video. Samsung also highlighted AR Emoji, stereo speakers tuned by AKG, and deeper Bixby integration. The S9 generation therefore represented a refinement year: the display and industrial design remained familiar while camera behavior, audio, and software interaction became more prominent.
How did the Galaxy S10 and S20 families expand the flagship range?
The 2019 and 2020 generations changed the Galaxy S naming and product structure. Samsung added more entry points within a single numbered family, introduced a dedicated 5G flagship variant, then skipped the expected S11 name to align the flagship number with the calendar year.
2019: Galaxy S10 created a multi-model anniversary family
The Galaxy S10 marked the tenth anniversary of the line and expanded the principal family to the Galaxy S10e, S10, and S10+. Samsung also introduced a separate Galaxy S10 5G model. The main S10 family became available in the United States and other markets on March 8, 2019.
Samsung’s headline technologies included Dynamic AMOLED Infinity-O displays, an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor, camera upgrades, and Wireless PowerShare. Samsung described the S10 5G as the first flagship 5G smartphone in the Galaxy line. The S10e made the family broader, while the S10+ and S10 5G demonstrated how Samsung could attach different screen, camera, connectivity, and battery configurations to one annual flagship identity.

Samsung did not call the 2020 generation Galaxy S11. Samsung introduced the Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra 5G, aligning the number with the year and making the Ultra name part of the flagship vocabulary that continued in later generations.
The series became widely available beginning March 6, 2020. Samsung U.S. listed starting prices of $999.99 for Galaxy S20, $1,199.99 for Galaxy S20+, and $1,399.99 for Galaxy S20 Ultra at launch. According to Samsung U.S.’s 2020 announcement, those were launch starting prices in the United States, not current prices and not universal prices across markets.

The S20 Ultra established a more explicitly top-tier combination of camera and display hardware. The result was a clearer hierarchy: the regular S model served as the compact or standard flagship, the Plus model enlarged the experience, and the Ultra model concentrated the most ambitious camera and productivity features at the top.
2021: Galaxy S21 brought a new visual identity and S Pen support
Samsung introduced the Galaxy S21 and S21+ in January 2021, with U.S. nationwide availability beginning January 29. The camera-contour design gave the family a distinctive visual signature, while Samsung emphasized redesigned flagship forms and pro-grade camera and video capabilities.
The Galaxy S21 family also changed the relationship between Galaxy S and Galaxy Note. The Galaxy S21 Ultra supported the S Pen, extending Note-like productivity into the S family without using the Note name. S Pen support on the S21 Ultra was an important bridge, but the pen was not yet the complete embedded Note-style identity that arrived with the S22 Ultra.
Why is the Galaxy S22 Ultra considered the Note successor?
The Galaxy S22 Ultra is the clearest point at which Samsung combined the camera-focused Galaxy S identity with the S Pen-enabled productivity experience associated with Galaxy Note.
Samsung announced the Galaxy S22 and S22+ on February 9, 2022, with availability beginning February 25. The standard S22 models emphasized Nightography features, a larger main camera sensor than the preceding S21 and S21+, and advanced image processing.
The S22 Ultra was the more consequential portfolio change. Samsung described the phone as combining the creative power of the S series with the S Pen productivity experience previously associated with Galaxy Note. The distinction matters: Galaxy Note is not counted as a Galaxy S generation, but the Note identity was folded into the top Galaxy S Ultra model.

How did the Galaxy S23, S24, S25, and S26 redefine the modern flagship?
The 2023–2026 generations retained the S, S+, and Ultra structure while shifting the headline story from raw hardware novelty toward imaging pipelines, dedicated AI features, long-term support, materials, and privacy.
2023: Galaxy S23 Ultra made 200-megapixel imaging central
The Galaxy S23, S23+, and S23 Ultra became available beginning February 17, 2023. Samsung positioned the S23 Ultra around a 200-megapixel Adaptive Pixel camera, an embedded S Pen, and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy.
The S23 generation continued the three-model structure that had become the standard modern Galaxy S family. The regular S23, S23+, and S23 Ultra were not separate numbered generations; they were different levels within the same annual flagship platform.
2024: Galaxy S24 made Galaxy AI the central proposition
Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S24, S24+, and S24 Ultra in January 2024 and presented the generation as the beginning of a new era of AI phones. Samsung highlighted translation, communication, search, image editing, and computational-photography features rather than treating AI as a minor software add-on.

The S25 family retained Samsung’s announced commitment to seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates. Samsung also introduced recycled cobalt in the batteries, linking the flagship story to material sourcing and product longevity. The S25 Ultra continued the Ultra role with an embedded S Pen and storage options up to 1TB. These are Samsung’s announced specifications and commitments, not independent durability or performance test results. Samsung’s Galaxy S25 launch announcement provides the manufacturer’s detailed positioning.
2026: Galaxy S26 moved toward proactive AI and privacy
Samsung announced the Galaxy S26, S26+, and S26 Ultra on February 26, 2026, and reported U.S. general availability beginning March 11, 2026. The S26 family is the current endpoint of this timeline within the supplied research.
Samsung describes the S26 family as its third-generation AI phone line, with proactive and adaptive Galaxy AI intended to handle complex tasks in the background. The S26 Ultra’s most distinctive hardware change is a built-in Privacy Display for mobile phones. Samsung also lists a customized Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Mobile Platform for Galaxy and redesigned thermal management.
The S26 claims should be read as Samsung’s launch claims as of August 12, 2026. AI behavior, software features, regional chip configurations, prices, and availability can change after launch and should be rechecked for the reader’s market.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What are the biggest changes across the Galaxy S timeline?
The Galaxy S timeline is not just a list of annual phones. It shows Samsung repeatedly changing what “flagship” means: first display quality and thinness, then design materials, then cameras and connectivity, then product tiers, pen productivity, AI, and long-term ownership.
Display technology moved from AMOLED to privacy-aware hardware
The original Galaxy S used Super AMOLED, and the Galaxy S II advanced the line to Super AMOLED Plus. The S6 edge introduced the family’s first dual-edge curved display, while the S8 generation made the bezel-minimized Infinity Display a defining visual feature.
The S10 generation added Dynamic AMOLED and Infinity-O display design. Later generations continued the move toward high-refresh-rate panels, while the S26 Ultra shifted the emphasis from merely viewing content to controlling who can see the display through its built-in Privacy Display. The progression is therefore both visual and functional: more screen, fewer bezels, smoother interaction, and eventually a privacy feature integrated into the phone itself.
Why did cameras become the main Galaxy S differentiator?
Cameras became the Galaxy S line’s most persistent flagship differentiator because Samsung used each generation to introduce a new kind of imaging improvement. Early models emphasized megapixels and general low-light progress; the S7 introduced dual-pixel autofocus, and the S9 added a variable-aperture camera and Super Slow-mo.
The S10 expanded camera choice across the family, the S20 Ultra made the top tier explicitly camera-led, and later Ultra models adopted 100x-class zoom branding. The S23 Ultra pushed the headline sensor specification to 200 megapixels. The S24 generation then made computational photography and AI-assisted capture and editing central to the camera story. Those descriptions summarize Samsung’s product positioning; they are not independent camera-test conclusions.
How did the Galaxy S family structure change?
| Family stage | Models or variants | What changed for buyers |
|---|---|---|
| 2010–2014 | Primarily one numbered flagship at a time | The main decision was whether to buy that year’s Galaxy S model, with regional hardware differences requiring attention. |
| 2015–2018 | S6 edge, S7 edge, S8+, and S9+ | Samsung tested curved displays and larger Plus or edge variants while keeping a recognizable base model. |
| 2019 | S10e, S10, S10+, and S10 5G | The tenth-anniversary generation offered more price, size, camera, and connectivity choices within one family. |
| 2020 | S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra 5G | The Ultra tier made the most ambitious camera and display configuration a permanent part of the flagship hierarchy. |
| 2021–2026 | S, S+, and Ultra families | The three-level structure became the recurring pattern, with Ultra models carrying the most specialized camera and productivity features. |
FE-branded phones are related derivative models rather than additional numbered Galaxy S generations. Because the supplied chronology does not establish individual FE launch dates or specifications, FE phones are not presented as separate entries in the main timeline.
How did Galaxy S converge with Galaxy Note?
The convergence happened in two stages. The Galaxy S21 Ultra first supported the S Pen, bringing Note-like writing and productivity to the S family. The Galaxy S22 Ultra went further by explicitly combining the S-series creative and camera identity with the Note-style embedded-pen experience.
That change explains why Galaxy Note is discussed in a Galaxy S timeline without being counted as a Galaxy S generation. Note remained a separate historical product line, but its flagship productivity role moved into Galaxy S Ultra.

How did Samsung’s software and ecosystem strategy evolve?
Bixby and Samsung DeX became prominent during the Galaxy S8 era, showing Samsung’s effort to make the phone more than an isolated handset. Galaxy AI became central beginning with the Galaxy S24, and Samsung carried that positioning into the S25’s “AI companion” message and the S26’s proactive, adaptive AI concept.
Recent Galaxy S launches also connect the phone to Samsung’s wider ecosystem. Samsung Galaxy Buds can extend that ecosystem, but Samsung Galaxy Buds are optional and are not required for any Galaxy S generation. Samsung promoted Buds alongside multiple S-series launches; compatibility, features, and availability can vary by market and model.

Why do software support and materials matter in the recent generations?
Samsung’s recent flagship messaging increasingly treats longevity as part of the product rather than an after-sale detail. Samsung announced seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates for the Galaxy S24 series and retained that commitment for the Galaxy S25 series.
The S25 also introduced recycled cobalt in its batteries. The combination of longer support and recycled materials changes the comparison with older Galaxy S phones: a historical model may still be interesting or affordable, but its remaining software-support period, battery condition, network compatibility, and repair options must be verified individually.
What should you check when buying a Galaxy S phone today?
The current Galaxy S26 family is the relevant starting point for a new flagship purchase, while older generations can make sense only when price, support status, and condition are clear.
For the current endpoint, the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra is the most feature-heavy option in the S26 family. If you are protecting that phone, choose a Galaxy S26 Ultra case and a Galaxy S26 Ultra screen protector rather than assuming an accessory from an older Ultra fits; a Samsung-compatible USB-C fast charger is likewise a model-and-wattage decision, not a universal Galaxy S purchase. Samsung’s S24 launch materials discuss separately sold charging accessories and model-specific charging capabilities.

Samsung’s recent launch materials identify Samsung.com Galaxy S phones and accessories plus Amazon, Best Buy, carriers, and other retailers as recurring channels; current S26 inventory, pricing, trade-in terms, and Samsung Care+ availability should be checked for your country before purchase. Samsung’s S25 launch information and S20 U.S. launch information illustrate that distribution and pricing are launch- and market-specific.
Readers considering an older model can compare a refurbished Samsung Galaxy S phone or a trade-in route, but the seller’s warranty, battery condition, repair history, remaining software support, and regional network compatibility need individual verification. The Galaxy S timeline can identify a generation, but it cannot certify the condition or support status of a particular used device.
Which Galaxy S generation is the most important historically?
The answer depends on the kind of change being measured. The original Galaxy S created the family, the Galaxy S III delivered its mass-market breakthrough, the S6 changed the materials and display direction, the S8 established the Infinity Display and DeX era, the S10 expanded the family, the S20 created the modern Ultra hierarchy, and the S22 Ultra absorbed the Note identity.
For the recent period, the S24 is the most important software milestone because Galaxy AI became central to Samsung’s flagship proposition. The S26 is the current endpoint in this research because it extends that strategy toward proactive AI and adds a built-in Privacy Display to the Ultra model.
