Richard Cam’s 2002 tutorial explains its 16-lane datapath, channel multiplexing, lane training, addressing, and reverse flow control. Here, “SPI-5” means the optical networking interface—not the separately named SCSI Parallel Interface-5.
What SPI-5 is—and what it is not
In “The SPI-5 Spec: A Tutorial,” published by EE Times on March 28, 2002, Richard Cam describes an interface for carrying traffic between PHY and link-layer devices. Its intended context was high-speed optical networking, including aggregate OC-768 traffic and other 40-Gb/s applications. The OIF implementation agreement also describes packet and cell transfer for ATM and packet over SONET/SDH (POS) traffic. Read Cam’s tutorial and the OIF SPI-5 implementation agreement copy.
The acronym is ambiguous. T10 separately lists “SCSI Parallel Interface – 5,” a different specification. Use the full name, System Packet Interface Level 5, when referring to the optical interface. T10’s project list helps distinguish the SCSI project.
SPI-5 is a historical interface, not a current product recommendation. A secondary overview says Interlaken, a close variant, later displaced System Packet Interface in the marketplace; that is historical context, not a current market survey. The Interlaken overview has limited sourcing, so the claim should not be treated as a definitive account of present-day deployments.

How the SPI-5 datapath carries traffic
The interface has transmit and receive sides with the same general behavior. Each datapath uses 16 parallel data lanes, alongside clock and control signals. Cam gives a lane operating range of 2.5 to 3.125 Gbps in his 2002 tutorial; these are specification parameters reported by that tutorial, not independent performance measurements.
Rather than dedicating a physical lane set to every traffic channel, SPI-5 interleaves channel data in bursts. The tutorial’s examples include ATM cells, POS traffic, and Ethernet frames. Different packet formats can be carried in the same stream.

Bursts and packet boundaries
A burst can end at a packet boundary or at a multiple of 32 bytes. Cam also explains that valid bursts can be shorter than 32 bytes, which is why SPI-5 needs a mechanism to prevent a source from flooding the interface with tiny bursts and excessive overhead.
How channel addresses and pools work
The basic port address is 8 bits, allowing up to 256 ports, according to Cam’s tutorial. The physical address identifies a sink-device port. For a larger address space, the tutorial describes an address control word (ACW) and optional address data words (ADWs); the address can extend to 18 bytes overall.

A pool groups addresses for flow control. For example, multiple destination ports may share a pool if they draw on shared buffer resources. This lets credits represent available capacity at the pool level rather than treating every port as an entirely separate buffer.
Extended-address word sequence
In Cam’s description, extended addressing uses an ACW, optional ADWs, and then a payload control word (PCW). The tutorial is explanatory rather than normative; implementers should consult the applicable OIF agreement and authoritative specification text for exact encoding and compliance requirements.

How reverse flow control protects buffers
SPI-5 carries flow-control information in a separate serial status path, rather than embedding it in the forward datapath. The sink grants credits according to its capacity; the source consumes credits as it sends data or address blocks. Credit flow control is organized by pool and conveyed over the status channel.
The status path runs at the datapath bit rate and is scrambled using the same scheme as the datapath, according to Cam. Keeping status out of band means the two directions can operate independently—useful in the tutorial’s example of link-layer transmit and receive functions implemented in separate devices. The OIF agreement also identifies flow control as part of the interface. See the implementation agreement copy.

Burst admission and short bursts
The burst admission procedure (BAP) uses a token bucket. Sending payload consumes tokens, and implementations that use address-data blocks also consume tokens for those blocks. Repeated very short bursts can deplete the available tokens, temporarily pausing the source. This limits pathological overhead while allowing short bursts when admission resources are available.
How training corrects lane skew
Because the 16 data lanes can experience different delays, the receiver needs to align their timing. SPI-5 uses a recognizable training sequence across the data lanes and a control signal. Cam describes 16 training control words followed by 16 training data words; the control and data patterns are bitwise complements, giving the receiver transition boundaries it can use to estimate lane-to-lane skew.
The source schedules training within a configured maximum interval and may send it in place of idle control words, according to the tutorial. This is a lane-deskew mechanism, not a payload feature. The exact timing and pattern requirements should be verified against the applicable implementation agreement before design or compliance work.
What the 2002 tutorial establishes—and its limits
Cam characterized SPI-5 as OIF’s first move into 40-Gb/s interfaces, writing, “SPI-5 is OIF’s first venture in the 40-Gb arena.” The tutorial is valuable for understanding the interface’s design concepts and reported parameters, but it was published in 2002 and is not itself a normative specification.
