Before a contractor changes an existing repository, send a short, project-specific handoff covering access, authentication, setup, branch and commit rules, required checks, and review. The list below is a template: replace every bracketed item with your team’s actual instructions, and omit anything that does not apply. It is not a universal standard, and it should not grant broader access than the assignment needs.
Copy-and-adapt contractor handoff
Send this through your approved onboarding channel before asking for a code change. Fill in the details rather than expecting a contractor to infer them from the repository.
Assignment: [task or ticket link and desired outcome]
Sponsor: [internal owner and contact]
Repository: [name and approved URL]
Scope: [what may change]
Out of scope: [systems, files, data, or actions not authorized]
Communication: [channel and expected response window]
Access request: [approved owner/process; identity to use]
Authentication: [required 2FA or other controls]
Secrets: [approved method to obtain them; never send credentials here]
Prerequisites: [runtime, tools, versions, and other requirements]
Setup: [repository-specific clone and setup commands]
Environment: [safe instructions for local configuration; no secret values]
Setup check: [command and expected success result]
Branch: [base branch and naming convention]
Commit: [message convention, if required]
Before submitting: [formatter, lint, test, and security commands]
Submit: [push instructions and pull/merge request destination]
Review: [reviewer or team, task link, and information to include]
Blockers or suspected credential exposure: [reporting contact/process]
Assignment end: [access-removal owner/process]
This format makes the handoff executable without pretending there is one correct set of commands for every repository. AWS’s CodeCommit tutorial, for example, walks through local setup, Git identity, staging and committing, pushing, sharing changes, branches, tags, and permissions; those are useful categories to consider, but its exact steps apply to CodeCommit, not automatically to another host (AWS CodeCommit tutorial).
Set the scope and arrange access first
Make ownership and boundaries explicit
Name the internal sponsor, the repository, the specific task, and the channel for questions. State what the contractor is authorized to change—and what they must not access. Route account and repository access through the person or process your organization has approved; do not treat a link to the repository as permission to use every related system.

GitLab’s corporate security handbook describes helpdesk support for account, hardware, and software provisioning for employees, temporary service providers, and external collaborators. It frames onboarding as the first weeks spent enabling someone to be productive, and the page reports a last-modified date of July 28, 2026. That is an example of an organization’s process, not a universal contractor timeline or access model (GitLab corporate security onboarding).
Specify identity, authentication, and secrets
Tell the contractor which identity to use and which authentication controls apply, including how to enroll in required two-factor authentication. Explain how to request secrets through your approved channel, how to configure them locally without checking them into source control, and where to report a suspected exposure. Never put a token, password, private key, or live credential in the handoff snippet, a commit, or an issue that is not approved for secrets.

GitLab’s authentication guidance advises secure token storage, not committing tokens, enabling 2FA, formal onboarding and offboarding, and periodic permission reviews. Translate those principles into your own tools and policy rather than assuming GitLab’s roles or settings apply to your team (GitLab credential security guidance).
Give them a reproducible local setup
Include repository-specific prerequisites and commands
List the required runtime and tool versions, any supported operating system or development environment, and the exact commands to clone and initialize this repository. Include safe environment-file instructions—for example, where to copy a sample configuration file and how to request values—without including the values themselves.

Give one command that verifies setup and say what success looks like: a passing test, a healthy local service, or another observable result. Name the person or channel that can resolve access, dependency, or environment problems. If the environment differs between contributors, document the supported route rather than leaving the contractor to guess.
Define the expected change and Git workflow
Keep the first change narrow and reviewable
Describe the intended outcome and identify relevant files or areas, generated files to avoid editing, and any constraints such as compatibility requirements. State whether the contractor should branch from the default branch or another named base; provide the exact branch naming convention and commit-message format only if your team enforces one.

Also specify whether the contractor should push a branch to the shared repository or use a fork, and give the destination for the review request. Those choices depend on repository settings and the access model; do not ask an external contributor to work around controls your maintainers have chosen.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.List checks and explain how to request review
Name the checks that matter for this repository
Replace generic labels with commands the contractor can run, such as the project’s formatter, linter, targeted tests, full test suite, or security checks. Distinguish required checks from recommendations, and say whether each must pass locally, in CI, or both. The right selection depends on the codebase’s risk and configured automation, not on a checklist that every project must copy.

Microsoft Learn covers pre-commit practices and commit-stage checks including static analysis, security testing, dependency management, and credential scanning. Treat these as categories to evaluate against your project and CI configuration, not a claim that every repository has or needs every check (Microsoft Learn: pre-commit and commit-stage practices).
Make the review path unambiguous
Tell the contractor where to open a pull or merge request, which task or ticket to link, whom to request as a reviewer, and what the description should cover: the change, validation performed, and any remaining risks or known limitations. Explain how to respond to review feedback and where to report a blocker. In GitLab’s own process, “All merge requests for GitLab CE and EE must go through code review to ensure the code is effective, understandable, maintainable, and secure.” Its guidance describes review by a group reviewer or domain expert followed by maintainer review and merge; other teams may use different approval paths (GitLab Code Review Guidelines).
Close out the assignment
Identify who owns access removal when the work ends and how completion is recorded. For a repeatable handoff, track an owner and completion state for access, setup, and review steps, adapting the record to your actual policy. OWASP’s onboarding chapter recommends role-scoped access and a tracked checklist in its smart-contract security context; its treasury and Web3-specific controls should not be copied as general requirements for unrelated projects (OWASP smart-contract onboarding guidance).
