For the simplest iPhone backup, start with Apple: choose iCloud for an automatic backup stored off your device, or back up to a Mac with Finder or a Windows PC with Apple Devices. Consider iMazing only if you need extra local controls such as scheduled backups, snapshots, custom storage locations, or browsing and exporting backup data. These options suit different needs; no independent speed, recovery, usability, or security testing establishes one as universally best.

Which iPhone backup option should you choose?

Apple documents both iCloud and computer backups. For Windows, its current workflow uses Apple Devices; Apple also refers users to iTunes for older supported setups. On Mac, the current built-in path is Finder, while iTunes applies to macOS Mojave or earlier. See Apple’s Windows backup instructions and its iPhone backup overview.

How to make a built-in Apple backup

Back up with iCloud

Choose iCloud if your priority is an off-device backup without connecting the phone to a computer. Apple lists iCloud as a backup method; check the storage available to your account and confirm the backup is enabled in your iPhone’s settings. Apple’s backup overview explains the available paths.

Back up to a Mac or Windows PC

  1. Connect the iPhone to the computer. On a Mac, open Finder. On Windows, open Apple Devices. If Apple Devices is not available on your PC, Apple’s instructions direct you to iTunes; iTunes is also the applicable Mac path for macOS Mojave or earlier.
  2. Select the iPhone in the app and follow its backup controls to create a backup on the computer. Apple’s Windows instructions describe the PC workflow.
  3. Decide whether to encrypt the local backup. Encryption is optional, not enabled by default. If you turn it on, create a password and store it somewhere secure and recoverable.

Should you encrypt a local iPhone backup?

Encryption can include saved passwords, Wi-Fi settings, website history, Health data, and call history. Apple says encrypted backups do not include Face ID, Touch ID, or the device passcode. The encryption password is essential: Apple warns that if you forget it, you cannot use previous encrypted backups. Review Apple’s information about encrypted backups before choosing this option.

Using a custom destination

For local backups, iMazing documents storing backups at custom locations, including external drives and NAS. This may help if you want the backup kept somewhere other than the computer’s usual storage. An external drive is optional, not a requirement for a basic iPhone backup; iMazing’s guides describe the supported destination options. No particular external SSD model, capacity, or price is established here.
