Its run ended with a planned modernization—not a reported breakdown. The story is an exceptional example of hardware redundancy and long-lived software, not proof that every server can or should remain unchanged for decades.
What server ran for 24 years without stopping?
Phil Hogan, an IT application architect, installed the Stratus Technologies server in 1993 for Double Eagle Steel Coating Co. in Dearborn, Michigan. The business later became known as Great Lakes Works EGL. Data Center Knowledge reported the server’s 24-year continuous run in February 2017. Data Center Knowledge’s account is the basis for the reported duration.
This was an enterprise fault-tolerant system, not an ordinary desktop PC left powered on. Its design used redundant hardware, and components were replaced over the years. Hogan estimated that close to 80 percent of the original system remained, so the uptime describes a maintained system with continuity—not a machine whose every part was untouched since 1993.
How can a server stay up for decades?
Redundant hardware helps avoid service interruptions
Fault-tolerant systems are designed with duplicated or otherwise redundant components so that a component problem need not immediately stop the service. The account attributes the server’s longevity in part to this approach and to replacing redundant components as needed. It does not provide a component-by-component maintenance log or a detailed architecture diagram, so it cannot establish precisely how each replacement was performed.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Stable software supported continued operation
The system ran Stratus’s proprietary VOS operating system. The 2017 article said VOS had not been updated since the early 2000s, but remained stable, and described its character-driven interface as simple enough for continued use. That is a description of this system’s history, not general advice to run unsupported software: older software can carry security, compatibility, and support risks that the account does not evaluate.
Was it the world’s oldest server?
The available account does not establish a definitive, independently audited world record. Jason Anderson, then Stratus’s vice president of business line management, said the company had learned of other servers operating for more than 20 years since a 2010 contest, while suggesting Hogan’s machine might be the oldest. That wording is qualified; it supports calling the system an unusually long-running server, not asserting an undisputed global title.

Why was the server finally retired?
U.S. Steel acquired the former DESCO business in 2015. A system upgrade was planned for April 2017, which was expected to retire the server and end its documented 24-year run. The report describes a planned modernization, not a failure. It does not establish what happened to the machine after that upgrade, so its later status should not be inferred from the 2017 account.

Uptime is an observed operating history; an SLA is a service commitment defined by a provider and customer, typically with specific measurement rules and remedies. A long uninterrupted run is remarkable, but it does not by itself show what service level was contractually promised, how uptime was measured, or what downtime budget applied. The 2017 report supplies no SLA percentage, downtime allowance, cost comparison, or independent benchmark. The headline’s comparison is therefore rhetorical rather than a measured comparison against a particular SLA.

The durable lesson is narrower and more useful: fault tolerance, replaceable components, and stable software helped one enterprise system remain in service for decades, while modernization eventually took priority. Its record is a historical case—not a recommendation to defer updates or migration on other systems.
