A passing check on a scratch or remote server proves only that a particular job passed in that environment. Before merging, replay the patch on the runner and against the repository state that will actually own the merge decision. Ask the question raised by the DEV Community article: “Did those agent tests even use your lockfile?” If you cannot answer, you cannot merge yet.

What a green result does—and does not—tell you

A green status is evidence about the job that produced it: its checkout, dependency state, commands, and environment. It is not, by itself, evidence that the reviewed patch works in the target repository with that repository’s intended checks. A scratch environment can be useful for drafting or exploration, but its result should not silently become the merge gate.

The DEV Community article’s recommendation is to replay the patch on your own runner before merging. It frames the remote box as a place for drafts rather than releases. That is a useful default, not a universal release policy: teams should set their own rules according to their threat model and delivery setup. Read the exact-title article.

What a meaningful local gate must verify

A gate is useful only if it connects the change under review to the checks and dependency state that matter for the repository. At minimum, establish:

CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Starter Kit PRO - Turbine Black (128GB Edition) (8GB RAM)
  • Includes Raspberry Pi 5 with 2.4Ghz 64-bit quad-core CPU (8GB RAM)
  • Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
  • CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
  • CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
  • Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized
  • Patch identity: the tested change is the same patch that will be merged, replayed onto the intended target rather than an unrelated or stale checkout.
  • Repository identity: the expected repository files and configuration are present.
  • Dependency state: dependencies were installed according to the project’s rules. Where the project uses a lockfile, verify that the checks used it; do not assume every project has one.
  • Relevant checks: the gate runs the project’s appropriate validation, not merely a convenient subset that omits critical tests.
  • Reproducibility: the same gate can be required in CI or another controlled merge process, rather than depending on an unrecorded manual result.

A marker file can record that a replay was intended or reported, but its presence does not prove replay occurred. The mechanism that creates and verifies the marker must itself be trustworthy.

How to read the article’s shell example

The article shows a small recipe, not a universal CI platform. Its visible checks require .agent/origin.json, inspect a replayed_locally value, refuse success unless CI is true, and then run git diff --check and pytest -q. Those pieces illustrate useful roles:

CanaKit Raspberry Pi 4 4GB Starter PRO Kit - 4GB RAM
  • Includes Raspberry Pi 4 4GB Model B with 1.5GHz 64-bit quad-core CPU (4GB RAM)
  • Includes Pre-Loaded 32GB EVO+ Micro SD Card (Class 10), USB MicroSD Card Reader

  • CanaKit USB-C PiSwitch (On/Off Power Switch for Raspberry Pi 4)
  • The origin record and replay marker can make the expected provenance explicit, provided a trusted process creates and validates them.
  • Requiring CI makes the result part of an automated gate rather than a local claim that reviewers cannot verify.
  • git diff --check catches whitespace errors and certain patch-format problems; it does not establish that the change is functionally correct.
  • pytest -q runs a Python test suite in quiet mode, but it is appropriate only if that is the repository’s actual test command and coverage.

Adapt the commands, dependency installation, lockfile policy, test suites, and provenance controls to the repository. A copied script is not a substitute for deciding what must be true before merge.

A practical merge decision

  1. Identify the exact patch and target revision that will be merged.
  2. Replay that patch in the intended repository checkout on the runner responsible for validation.
  3. Install dependencies using the repository’s documented process, including its lockfile when applicable.
  4. Run the repository’s required checks and make their result visible to the merge process.
  5. Do not treat a scratch-server pass as sufficient if you cannot establish that the same patch, repository state, and relevant dependencies were exercised.

When “Scratch” means the Scratch.dev product

The engineering advice above uses “scratch server” generically for a temporary or remote development and test environment. Scratch is also the name of a specific CLI and hosted service; its documentation describes a workflow for creating and publishing static websites with Markdown and React.

For that product, scratch dev starts development with hot reload, scratch build creates production output in dist/, and scratch preview serves the built output locally. The documented build process installs npm packages, compiles MDX and Tailwind CSS, builds server and client output, generates HTML, copies static assets, and writes the result to dist/. See the Scratch documentation.

Scratch’s hosted service is documented as being in Preview. Its documentation warns, “Preview warning: Scratch is in preview. Don’t use it for anything sensitive or critical.” It also says hosted projects expire after 30 days during Preview. Those terms apply to Scratch’s hosted service, not to scratch servers in general. See the Scratch documentation.
