Choose The Revenant for a solitary, punishing wilderness survival story; choose The Hateful Eight for an ensemble Western built around suspicion and betrayal among strangers trapped by a blizzard. They share a wintry setting, but offer very different kinds of tension.

Which should you watch?

  • Pick The Revenant if you want to follow one injured man’s struggle to survive and pursue justice in a hostile winter landscape.
  • Pick The Hateful Eight if you prefer a group of wary characters, a confined setting, and intrigue that grows as people reveal—or conceal—who they are.

In short, The Revenant points its attention outward, toward physical endurance in the wilderness. The Hateful Eight keeps its characters together and lets their relationships fuel the suspense.

What kind of Western is each film?

The Revenant: a survival-and-pursuit story

Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant follows Hugh Glass after a bear attack leaves him for dead. The official synopsis describes his struggle through winter toward survival and justice. 20th Century Studios calls the film “inspired by true events,” but that description alone does not establish how closely its plot, characters, or timeline match historical evidence. 20th Century Studios’ film page

The Hateful Eight: an ensemble under pressure

The Hateful Eight brings a group of travelers to a stagecoach stopover on a blizzard-hit mountain pass in post-Civil War Wyoming. The Directors Guild of America describes the group as including bounty hunters, a prisoner, and a supposed sheriff; intrigue and betrayal follow as the travelers take refuge together. The Revenant
  • After a 19th-century fur trapper gets mauled by a grizzly bear, he's robbed and left for dead by his companions. He survives and seeks revenge on them.

How do their settings and viewing textures differ?

The Revenant makes the remote winter landscape central to its visual experience. Industrial Light & Magic describes the film as set in the 1820s and shot entirely with natural lighting in remote locations. Its effects work also extended to weather, environments, injuries, blood, scars, and animals. ILM says the bear-attack scene was delivered as a continuous six-minute shot. Those production details help explain why the film’s survival premise is conveyed through physical exposure and environment as well as plot. ILM’s production feature

The Hateful Eight instead concentrates on an ensemble sheltering from a storm. Its stopover creates a bounded situation in which suspicion and deception among the characters are the key source of tension, rather than one protagonist’s journey across a wilderness.

Which one takes longer?

The American Film Institute catalog lists The Revenant at 156 minutes and The Hateful Eight at 167 minutes—a difference of 11 minutes in those catalog records. What production details add context?

At the 2016 BAFTA winners’ press conference, Iñárritu said, “I wanted people to experience, to feel lost as a character in the middle of nowhere.” Producer Mary Parent recalled that production had to pause “because we virtually ran out of snow,” before the team later found a location in Ushuaia. These are retrospective comments about the film’s creative intent and production conditions, not evidence that its story is historically exact. BAFTA press conference transcript

Which is worth your time?

For an isolated protagonist, wilderness immersion, and a survival-centered story, choose The Revenant. For an ensemble of strangers whose confinement gives suspicion and betrayal room to build, choose The Hateful Eight. If you are deciding partly by length, the AFI catalog records make The Revenant the shorter option, subject to the edition you watch.
