For that, your application needs to agree on a reply destination, a correlation value, and what to do when a reply is late or never arrives.
Kafka protocol responses are not application replies
Kafka’s wire protocol has request and response messages between a client and a broker. The request header includes a correlation_id, which the response returns so the client can match it to the request. The Apache Kafka protocol documentation describes the exchange this way: “The client initiates a socket connection and then writes a sequence of request messages and reads back the corresponding response message.” Apache Kafka protocol documentation
That mechanism belongs to Kafka’s transport protocol. It does not mean that when your application publishes a business request record to a topic, Kafka will arrange for a worker to publish a corresponding business reply. The application-level conversation needs its own routing and matching contract.
What a topic-level request/reply flow needs
A requester and worker need to agree on enough information to route a reply and associate it with the right outstanding request. A typical flow is:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- The requester creates a request record and assigns it a unique correlation value.
- The requester identifies where the reply should go, such as a shared reply topic and, if needed, a particular reply partition.
- A worker consumes and processes the request, then publishes a reply to the indicated destination while preserving the correlation value.
- The requester consumes replies, matches each one to a pending request, and applies its own deadline and policy for late or missing replies.
These are application-level responsibilities. Kafka records and transports the messages; the participants implement the conversation semantics.
Use Spring Kafka’s request/reply support
If your application uses Spring for Apache Kafka, its documented ReplyingKafkaTemplate provides a client-side abstraction for a single request/reply scenario, with listener infrastructure to process requests and send replies. The framework uses headers for correlation and routing: KafkaHeaders.CORRELATION_ID, KafkaHeaders.REPLY_TOPIC, and the optional KafkaHeaders.REPLY_PARTITION. The reference describes listener support that echoes correlation information and determines the reply topic. The reply container’s configuration matters: Spring can infer reply topic or partition information when the configured container is for a single topic or a single topic-partition offset. With other configurations, the application must set the reply headers. The documentation also covers sharing a reply topic across templates when each instance listens on a different partition in the relevant single-partition configuration. Check these specifics against the Spring Kafka version your project actually uses.
Header names can be customized for interoperability with a server that is not using Spring or does not use @KafkaListener. In that case, both sides must agree on the header names and representation; the Spring documentation also describes listener-side configuration to echo a custom correlation header from a non-Spring requester. Choose an abstraction or define the contract yourself
| Approach | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Spring Kafka request/reply abstraction | The application already uses Spring Kafka and the documented single request/reply use case fits. | Framework and dependency-version fit; reply-container configuration; whether routing headers can be inferred or must be set. |
| Application-defined topic contract | Participants do not share Spring’s abstraction or need a custom protocol. | Agree on correlation representation, reply topic and optional partition, reply schema, and how callers match replies. Spring’s customizable headers support interoperability, but the cited documentation does not establish equivalent built-in abstractions for other clients. |
Either way, make routing and correlation explicit. Do not infer that a particular library or approach is faster: the cited documentation does not establish comparative latency or throughput.

Correlation and reply-routing metadata help participants find the right message; they do not define the policies around the conversation. The application still needs to decide:

- How long a requester waits before treating a reply as timed out.
- What happens if a reply arrives after that deadline.
- Whether and how duplicate requests or replies are suppressed.
- How long pending-request state is retained and how it is cleaned up.
- Who is authorized to send requests and replies, and how that is enforced.
The Apache Kafka protocol and Spring Kafka references cited here do not quantify end-to-end latency, throughput, or reliability for an application-level request/reply flow. Those outcomes depend on the system and policies you implement.
