A 5-to-10-product catalog does not, by itself, determine an ecommerce platform bill. To estimate the real cost, add the platform subscription (if any), payment-processing charges, any extra fee for an outside payment provider, required hosting and add-ons, and any plan threshold that applies to your sales. The official pricing pages reviewed do not provide enough information to calculate one comparable all-in total without assumptions about your business.
Why SKU count does not predict the bill
SKU count describes how many distinct products you sell; it is not a reliable cost input on its own. The pricing pages reviewed tie costs to factors such as plan, billing cadence, order value and payment method, sales thresholds, geography, and hosting. Shopify lists unlimited product listings on its plans, and the reviewed pages do not establish a price premium for moving from five products to ten.
For a useful estimate, distinguish the recurring platform charge from transaction-based charges. A low monthly subscription can still come with processing costs, while a platform with no software fee can require separately paid hosting. The relevant comparison is the cost of the capabilities and services your store actually needs.

| Platform | Recurring platform or software fee | Payment and transaction charges | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify | Basic is listed at $39 USD per month with monthly billing or $29 USD per month when paid yearly. | Standard online card rates are listed as 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction on Basic, 2.7% + $0.30 on Grow, and 2.5% + $0.30 on Advanced. Third-party transaction fees are listed as 2%, 1%, and 0.6%, respectively. | The third-party transaction fee is distinct from card processing; do not simply add rates without knowing the payment provider and transaction details. International rates add 1%. Prices are as displayed on Shopify’s pricing page and may change. Shopify pricing |
| BigCommerce | Not stated in the cited pricing details. | Card processing begins at 2.89% + $0.29 per transaction. | Annual online sales are measured on a trailing-12-month basis using “GMV (gross order value minus 10%).” Published plan rates can depend on eligibility; one stated condition is that the business be US-based. Check the current plan threshold and obtain a live quote. BigCommerce plan fees |
| WooCommerce | $0 platform fee on the official comparison; hosting is selected separately. | WooPayments card processing is listed at approximately 2.50–2.90% + $0.30 per transaction. No additional fee is listed for using a third-party payment solution. | The $0 software fee is not a $0 operating cost: hosting and any capabilities the store needs still belong in the estimate. How to build a store-specific estimate
Use a worksheet rather than guessing at a sample bill. Calculate fixed and variable components separately, then include costs that apply to your particular setup.
- Choose the country and platform plan. Record the plan, monthly or annual billing cadence, and eligibility conditions. Annual billing and monthly billing are not interchangeable price quotes.
- Estimate payment volume and order count. Use expected monthly gross sales and average order value—or the expected number of orders—so you can apply both the percentage and per-transaction parts of processing fees.
- Specify payment mix and provider. Identify domestic versus international transactions, card mix, and whether you will use the platform’s payment service or an external provider. Check for a separate platform transaction fee when using an outside provider.
- Check sales thresholds and overages. For any plan with a sales threshold, use the vendor’s stated measurement period and sales definition. Confirm which plan applies if sales cross a limit.
- Add required services. Include hosting for a self-hosted store, plus any apps, features, fulfillment, or shipping arrangements your operation requires. The cited vendor pages do not establish a comparable price for those choices.
- State labor assumptions separately. Setup, administration, and technical work can affect the practical cost, but the cited pages do not quantify labor for a 5-to-10-SKU store. Estimate it using your own staffing and implementation assumptions rather than treating it as a platform fee.
A basic calculation framework is:
Estimated monthly operating cost = recurring platform or hosting charges + percentage-based payment fees + per-order processing fees + applicable external-provider platform fees + required apps and services + estimated labor and other operating costs.
Rank #2
Apply each percentage only to the transaction amount and category specified by its provider. The actual calculation needs country, plan and billing cadence, monthly sales, order count or average order value, payment mix, provider, and required services. Without those inputs, a single total would imply precision the listed prices do not support.
What a pricing-page comparison can—and cannot—tell you
Vendor pricing pages are useful for checking listed plan and processing terms, but they do not settle the economics of an individual store. Shopify’s page also displays a platform-wide sales figure of $1.1 trillion; that is not a cost statistic and says nothing about the economics of a small catalog. The BigCommerce page’s threshold and eligibility terms warrant checking against a current quote, while WooCommerce’s $0 platform fee leaves hosting and store-specific requirements to price separately.
Rank #3
None of the cited pages supplies a comparable all-in total for a 5-to-10-SKU store. They also do not establish the costs of taxes, implementation, inventory carrying, fulfillment, advertising, chargebacks, domain registration, or support labor. Treat those as separate business-specific line items when they apply; do not infer them from a platform subscription.
