Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A queue can deliver and track messages, but it is not automatically a durable record of why a job should exist, what happened while it ran, or whether its business task finished. To find a job that never ran, trace its path from the application’s intent through publishing, broker storage, worker execution and acknowledgement—and separately verify the final outcome.
What a queue does—and what it does not prove
A background job crosses several boundaries. The application creates an intent; a producer publishes a message; the broker accepts and routes it; a worker receives it and performs the required operation; and the system records whether that operation succeeded or failed. A message can go missing, be delayed, run more than once or appear successful without the business work being complete if any boundary is misunderstood or unobserved.
These are separate facts: a job was requested, a message was accepted, a worker received it, and the intended operation completed. A queue’s delivery state alone does not establish all four. Keep application-level status or outcome tracking where operators can query it, and use the queue for the delivery role its configured guarantees support. This complements a queue; it does not mean every queue loses messages or that a database should replace one.
Trace the job through each responsibility boundary
| Boundary | What must happen | What to inspect when it fails |
|---|---|---|
| Application to producer | The application creates the intended work and attempts to publish it. | Check the application’s record of the request, producer errors, connection interruptions and whether the publish result was known. |
| Producer to broker | The broker accepts the message and routes it to the intended destination. | Check publisher confirmation and routing behavior. An uncertain confirmation can leave the producer unsure whether the broker accepted the message. |
| Broker storage and delivery | The configured queue and message settings retain work as expected and make it available to a consumer. | Check queue durability, message persistence, replication mode, broker restarts, retention and service-specific guarantees. |
| Worker to required operation | A worker receives the message and performs or durably hands off the required work. | Inspect worker health, logs, timeouts, shutdown behavior, redelivery and when acknowledgement occurs. |
| Application outcome | The system records completion or failure so operators can tell what happened. | Look for a correlated start, completion or failure record, and compare actual runs with expected scheduled runs. |
How to diagnose a job that never ran
- Confirm the job was actually requested. Find the application event, schedule occurrence or other durable evidence that the business work was intended. If the request and queue publish are separate operations, a failure between them can leave the intent recorded without a message, or a message without a matching business record. Do not assume those operations are atomic.
- Establish whether the broker accepted and routed the publish. Check producer logs and connection errors. RabbitMQ recommends publisher confirms so the producer learns when the broker has taken responsibility; if a confirmation is lost, retransmitting an unconfirmed message can create a duplicate. Where an unrouted message is an error, check routing as well as confirmation.
- Verify the configured persistence and restart behavior. Inspect both queue and message settings, plus replication and the broker’s documented guarantees. RabbitMQ distinguishes durable queues and persistent messages from exclusive queues that do not survive a node restart; queue durability alone should not be treated as proof that every message survives every failure.
- Check whether a worker received the job and what it did before acknowledging. Match broker delivery information with worker logs and application records using a correlation identifier. RabbitMQ’s reliability guidance treats acknowledgements as a transfer of responsibility: a consumer should acknowledge after the required work is done or durably handed off. Acknowledging too early can allow a message to be removed before the application outcome is safe.
- Look for redelivery, retries or duplicate effects. A worker may finish the operation and fail before its acknowledgement reaches the broker, so work can be delivered again. At-least-once delivery therefore requires the business operation to tolerate replay. For SQS, a visibility timeout that expires before processing finishes can make a message available to another consumer; for long-running work, review whether visibility needs to be extended.
- Separate a missed schedule from a failed execution. Compare expected schedule times with recorded starts and outcomes. A scheduled job that never fired is different from one that started and hung, crashed or failed. Alert on missing expected runs rather than relying only on worker error logs.
- Inspect the failure path, not just the main queue. Check retry limits, dead-letter queue depth and age, and redrive configuration. A job can leave the normal queue yet remain unresolved in a failure queue.
Why retries can still leave work incomplete
Retries help with transient faults, such as a temporary dependency outage, but they do not turn every failure into eventual success. A permanent problem such as malformed input may fail identically on every attempt. Define which errors are retryable, cap attempts according to the job’s needs, and route exhausted or poison messages for investigation instead of letting them cycle unseen.

At-least-once delivery means a message can be delivered again after a failure or an uncertain acknowledgement. Microsoft’s background-job guidance recommends idempotent jobs; RabbitMQ likewise recommends idempotent consumers for redelivery scenarios. In practice, make repeated execution safe—for example, by recording a stable operation identifier and ensuring that processing it again does not apply the business effect twice. Acknowledgement timing reduces some loss risks but cannot by itself guarantee exactly-once business effects.
Framework settings are not interchangeable with an application retry policy. In Celery, acks_late controls acknowledgement timing; it is not the same thing as calling Task.retry. Its behavior also depends on the worker pool and transport, so confirm the current Celery documentation for the deployed version and configuration before relying on a particular failure outcome.

Make silent failures observable
Background work has no user waiting at the screen to report a failure. Microsoft’s Azure Architecture Center warns that failures are silent unless actively monitored, and that a job which hangs or crashes can appear normal without completion tracking. Capture the job’s correlation identifier and meaningful timestamps for request, start, completion and failure. Keep the status in a place operators can query independently of whether the message remains in a queue.
- Alert when an expected scheduled run has no corresponding start or outcome by its deadline.
- Track completion and failure rates alongside worker health; a healthy-looking worker process does not prove its jobs are finishing.
- Monitor oldest-message age and queue depth so growing delay is visible before it looks like missing work.
- Monitor dead-letter depth and age, and alert when failed jobs remain unreviewed.
- Preserve enough correlation data to follow one job from its originating request to the final business outcome.
Use dead-letter queues as a controlled failure path
A dead-letter queue can isolate messages that repeatedly fail so they can be inspected and, when appropriate, redriven. It is not a resolution by itself: messages can accumulate there without alerting or an owner. Decide what triggers dead-lettering, who investigates, how replay is approved and how duplicate effects are prevented.

Dead-letter configuration can affect ordering, retention, resource use and delivery semantics. RabbitMQ 4.3 quorum-queue documentation says at-least-once dead-lettering must be explicitly enabled and requires a compatible overflow strategy; it consumes additional resources and may produce duplicates while delivery is retried. The same RabbitMQ documentation describes a publisher-confirmed quorum-queue message as protected from loss while a majority of its hosting nodes are not permanently unavailable. Those are RabbitMQ-specific documented behaviors, not universal guarantees for all brokers.

| Reliability question | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Producer confirmation | Does the producer learn when the broker accepts responsibility? What does it do if confirmation is lost, and can retry create a duplicate? |
| Persistence and replication | What survives a process restart, node restart or hardware failure? Are both queue and message persistence configured, and what replication assumptions apply? |
| Delivery and acknowledgement | When is a message hidden, acknowledged, deleted or redelivered? What happens if a worker crashes before or after performing the operation? |
| Duplicate tolerance | Can uncertain publishing, timeout expiry or worker failure lead to another delivery? Is the business effect safe to repeat? |
| Retry and poison handling | Which errors are transient, how many attempts are allowed, and where do permanent failures go? |
| Dead-letter behavior | Is forwarding at-most-once or at-least-once? What are the ordering, duplication, retention and resource trade-offs? |
| Operational visibility | Can operators see completion, missed schedules, oldest-message age and dead-letter backlog? |
For a product-specific example, AWS documents a five-minute deduplication window for SQS FIFO. A producer retry after that window can create another message, and visibility-timeout expiry before processing finishes can expose a message to another consumer. These details apply to the documented SQS behavior, not to queues generally; verify current service documentation when configuring a production system.
