Claude Code can inspect a codebase, edit files, run commands, and connect to developer tools. It is most useful as part of a repeatable development loop: give it project context and a bounded task, review its proposed or completed changes, then run the checks that matter for your application. It can reduce avoidable friction, but it does not guarantee faster delivery or defect-free code.
What Claude Code does—and where to use it
Anthropic describes Claude Code as “an agentic coding tool that reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands, and integrates with your development tools.” It can help with repository exploration, debugging, refactoring, tests, pull requests, and documentation. The developer still defines the desired outcome and constraints, reviews changes, and checks that the application behaves as intended. See Anthropic’s Claude Code overview.
Current documentation describes terminal, IDE, desktop, and browser surfaces. Choose based on the work and the access you want the tool to have; account eligibility and setup can vary by surface. Check the live getting started guide for current requirements and installation options.
| Surface | Useful when | Consider |
|---|---|---|
| Terminal | You want command-line control, repository work, or scriptable workflows. | Commands run in your development environment, so understand and review what is executed. |
| IDE | You want to work alongside your editor and inspect code changes in context. | Confirm the extension or integration fits your editor and review the resulting diff. |
| Desktop | You prefer a visual workspace for reviewing work or managing sessions. | Check the current account and platform requirements in Anthropic’s setup guide. |
| Browser | You need a remote or long-running task workflow. | Review what repository access and permissions the task requires before starting. |
These are workflow distinctions, not a guarantee that one surface is faster. Use the surface that gives you adequate context and makes review straightforward.

Start by learning the repository
Open Claude Code from the project root so its work starts with the relevant repository context. Begin with questions rather than a speculative rewrite. Anthropic’s common workflow guide includes prompts such as “give me an overview of this codebase,” “find the files that handle user authentication,” and “trace the login process from front-end to database.”
Use a broad question to orient yourself, then narrow the investigation to the files, behavior, and constraints that matter. For example, after asking for an overview, ask which modules participate in login, how data moves between them, and where the relevant tests live. Ask the tool to point to the code it used to reach its explanation; verify important conclusions in the repository.
For a bug
Provide the steps that reproduce it, the command or test you ran, and the exact error output. Ask Claude Code to trace the failure and identify likely causes before asking for a fix. This helps distinguish a demonstrated failure path from a plausible guess.

For a feature
State the intended behavior, affected users or interfaces, constraints, and compatibility requirements. If the change is substantial, ask for a plan first and review its proposed files and approach before authorizing implementation.
Use a reviewable change loop
Keep work bounded enough that you can understand the result. A dependable cycle is to investigate, agree on scope, implement, verify, and review—not to treat a generated patch as finished simply because it compiles.
- Inspect: Ask which files and behavior are relevant, and check the explanation against the code.
- Set scope: Describe what should change and what must remain unchanged. For a multi-part task, request a plan and resolve assumptions before edits.
- Make a bounded change: Prefer a small, testable increment over a broad rewrite. Call out backward-compatibility needs explicitly.
- Run project checks: Use the repository’s existing test, lint, type-check, build, or other verification commands as appropriate. Ask Claude Code to suggest checks if you do not know them, then confirm the commands fit the project.
- Review the diff: Inspect changed files for unintended edits, missing cases, unsafe behavior, and consistency with project conventions.
- Adjust and recheck: Address review findings, then rerun the checks affected by the change.
Claude Code can help write tests, but generated tests are a starting point, not proof of correctness. Review whether they cover the intended behavior and failure cases, and run them in the project environment.

Make project context reusable with CLAUDE.md
A project’s CLAUDE.md can record concise guidance Claude Code should use repeatedly: architecture notes, coding conventions, preferred libraries, important commands, and review expectations. Good instructions help orient work without attempting to specify every possible task. Keep them current, specific, and focused on information that applies across the project.
Separate team-wide project guidance from personal preferences. A convention needed by every contributor belongs with shared project instructions; an individual preference should not silently become a project requirement. Anthropic explains how Claude Code uses project context in How Claude remembers your project, and describes configuration scopes and precedence in Settings files and precedence. Consult those references before deciding where a particular instruction or setting belongs.
Scale repeated or concurrent work deliberately
For independent tasks that can be separated cleanly, worktrees and parallel sessions can reduce the risk of multiple sessions editing the same working tree. Give each task a clear boundary, identify how its result will be verified, and review the combined changes before integration. Parallel activity is not automatically more efficient if tasks overlap or create conflicts.

For recurring work, the CLI, CI workflows, hooks, skills, and integrations can make a process more repeatable. Choose the mechanism that matches how often the task occurs and how much access it needs:
- Interactive CLI work: Useful when a developer needs to steer investigation and inspect changes as they happen.
- Scripts or CI: Useful for defined, repeatable jobs, provided the job’s inputs, permissions, and failure reporting are clear.
- Hooks: Can connect actions to workflow events. Review what a hook runs and the permissions it receives; see Anthropic’s hooks reference.
- Custom agents or skills: Can package recurring task guidance, but still need an owner to keep instructions and expected checks accurate.
- Worktrees and parallel sessions: Fit separable tasks where independent working directories make changes easier to isolate and review.
Automation makes a process repeatable; it does not establish that the output is correct. Preserve visible failures and a human review path for consequential changes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose integrations and permissions with care
Model Context Protocol (MCP) integrations let Claude Code connect with external tools and data sources. An integration is worthwhile when it supports a concrete task; it also expands the information or actions available to the workflow. Before enabling one, identify the repository context, external data, and permissions it needs, and decide who on the team owns its configuration.

Apply the same scrutiny to commands, hooks, and automation. Review the current Claude Code security guidance and permission settings. Do not disable safeguards merely to avoid a confirmation step; instead, grant only the access needed for the task and keep the resulting changes reviewable.
Check setup requirements against current documentation
Claude Code’s supported platforms, account eligibility, installation methods, and update behavior can change. Anthropic’s current setup documentation lists supported operating-system versions and installation paths, including native installers and package managers. Follow that live guide rather than relying on an old command or requirement copied into an article or team note.
Likewise, choose a workflow based on your own codebase and review requirements, not an assumed productivity figure. The documented capabilities establish what the tool can do; they do not establish a universal time saving.
