Rahul Vyas reports spending about $3.60 in API token usage on an AI-assisted redesign of ClinicLive. That is one developer’s accounting for model use—not the total cost of the work, a price quote for a software redesign, or a typical market rate. Vyas also describes human review and design decisions, but gives no hours or labor cost for them.
What the $3.60 figure includes—and leaves out
Vyas says he calculated the API figure by summing the project’s actual token consumption and pricing it at the API list rates for the models used. He reports about $3.60 cumulatively for the redesign, compared with $6.20 in API spend for his earlier ClinicLive build. These are the author’s project figures; no independent ledger or recalculation is provided, and they are not current API price guidance.
The figure measures model usage under that accounting method. It does not include an itemized cost for the human work Vyas describes: reviewing screenshots, choosing among design directions, and rejecting a palette. He does not report how many hours that work took or assign it a dollar value. He also notes that someone using a subscription would not see the same API-spend line on their bill.

How the reported spend accumulated
Vyas’s article gives cumulative API-spend milestones as work progressed. The figures below are his project ledger amounts, not separate charges for each part.

The comparison with the earlier build is limited to reported API spend: $3.60 for the redesign and $6.20 for the preceding build. It does not establish that the redesign itself was cheaper overall, because the figures do not account for human time or other project costs.

What the redesign changed
This was more than a color refresh. Vyas describes a design-token system and work across several ClinicLive surfaces: the booking flow, kiosk, waiting-room board, staff queue and chat, and booking confirmation ticket. His examples show how interface decisions were tied to the setting and the person using each screen.

The booking slots were grouped into morning and afternoon, while booking controls were adapted for a 375-pixel-wide screen. The work also included a booking confirmation ticket.

Kiosk and waiting-room board
Vyas reframed the waiting-room board as signage rather than treating it like an ordinary application page. The kiosk received a success state that takes over the screen and resets after eight seconds, a choice intended to account for the next person using it.
Staff queue and chat
The staff queue gained a WAITED column after Vyas asked, “what number does the person at the desk actually act on?” The question shifted the design toward information reception staff could use in the moment. The scope also included staff chat.

Accessibility and motion
The author reports accessibility and motion work as part of the redesign. The account does not provide an independent accessibility audit or a detailed list of conformance results, so it supports saying those areas were addressed—not that the finished product meets a particular standard.
Where human judgment shaped the work
Vyas says the process started with four possible art directions, from which one was selected. He later revised a palette after someone pointed out that it looked too similar to the palette of his other project. Those decisions are part of the story behind the small API bill: model usage was one cost, while choosing and correcting the direction remained human work without a stated price.

His summary is: “The AI executes judgment; it doesn’t replace it. Your questions are the design.” That is the author’s interpretation of this project, not a measured finding about every AI-assisted redesign. He also characterizes the human contribution as “the human eye”—each screenshot reviewed, each direction judged, and the palette vetoed. It is a description of the work, not an itemized labor estimate.

Vyas says reviewing screenshots exposed visual problems that code review had missed. In his examples, an obsolete sidebar remained on the waiting-room display, and a top bar wrapped badly at phone width. Those are rendering and context issues: the code can be reviewed without revealing how a whole screen reads at its intended size or in its intended setting.
The post describes a screenshot harness and reports that the nine tests from the prior season remained green through the redesign. That is useful project-level evidence that the existing suite continued to pass; it does not show that the tests covered every visual change or that a green suite guarantees a successful redesign. In this account, screenshot inspection and automated tests served different roles.

What this case can—and cannot—tell you
- It can show: one developer’s reported API token spend for a redesign that touched multiple product surfaces.
- It can illustrate: how questions about users and setting led to practical interface choices, and how screenshot review caught visual defects missed in code review.
- It cannot establish: a typical redesign price, total project cost, labor savings, or the amount another team would spend using different models, tools, workflows, or billing arrangements.
For readers assessing an AI-assisted design project, the useful distinction is between model usage and the full work of reaching a usable result. Vyas accounts for the former in dollars and describes the latter through human review and judgment, without quantifying its time or cost.
