The Outer Worlds 2 is a single-player science-fiction RPG for players who value character builds, faction choices, and companions more than consistently polished action combat. Reviews praise its role-playing and report improved combat, but also flag sluggish melee, uneven difficulty, bugs, and performance rough edges. Whether it is worth playing depends on which side of that trade-off matters more to you—and, on PC, whether your hardware meets its requirements.
What kind of game is The Outer Worlds 2?
Developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Xbox Game Studios, The Outer Worlds 2 released on October 29, 2025. You play an Earth Directorate agent sent to Arcadia, a colony threatened by dangerous rifts and divided among the Protectorate, a religious rebellion, and corporate interests. The official description emphasizes decisions, character abilities, and companions with their own backgrounds and goals. Obsidian’s game page sums up the sequel with the line “New star system. New crew. Same Outer Worlds.”
That makes the central question less “Is every fight perfectly tuned?” and more “Do I want to shape a character and navigate competing interests in a story-driven RPG?”

The main advantages
Choices, factions, and companions give role-playing room
Xbox describes the player’s abilities and decisions as shaping the narrative, with Arcadia’s factions competing for power. Companions bring individual traits, histories, and aims into that setting. If you enjoy weighing allegiances and making choices through a defined character, these are core reasons to consider the game. Xbox’s official overview outlines the premise and faction conflict.

Character building has multiple levers
Windows Central’s Samuel Tolbert describes skills such as Engineering and Leadership, perks connected to those skills, and the return of character strengths and flaws. These systems offer more ways to shape how a character approaches the game than simply choosing a weapon. Tolbert’s review calls the sequel “more of the same where it counts, with a couple of key improvements that elevate the whole experience,” after a 40-hour playthrough. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a guarantee that every player will value the changes the same way. Read the Windows Central review.
One reviewer found combat substantially improved
Tolbert says combat improved substantially compared with the first game. That is a meaningful positive for returning players, but it sits alongside a less favorable view from PC Gamer: its reviewer liked the guns but found melee sluggish and imprecise, and reported uneven encounters and a reverse difficulty curve. Combat may therefore feel better overall than in the original while still frustrating players who want consistently responsive melee or a smoothly escalating challenge. Difficulty settings and character builds can affect the experience. PC Gamer’s review details its criticisms.

You can choose first- or third-person play
Windows Central reports that the game supports first-person play and adds a third-person option. That flexibility is useful if you prefer seeing your character on screen, though the review does not establish that either perspective changes the underlying combat balance.

Action polish is not the game’s clearest strength
PC Gamer’s review describes the guns positively but calls melee imprecise and sluggish. It also reports uneven challenge and a reverse difficulty curve, in which the challenge does not necessarily rise in a satisfying way as the game progresses. Those are review judgments rather than universal outcomes; build choices and difficulty settings can influence how combat feels.

Who is most likely to enjoy it?
- Good fit: You want a single-player RPG centered on choices, character skills and flaws, companions, and faction conflict.
- Maybe: You enjoy shooting and role-playing, but are willing to tolerate uneven encounters or less satisfying melee based on the PC Gamer review.
- Poor fit: You need multiplayer, expect every combat encounter to feel tightly balanced, or your PC falls short of the official requirements.
For more context on the overall experience, Windows Central disclosed that Xbox Game Studios provided its review code and that Xbox did not see the review before publication. The review is still an individual critic’s judgment; use it alongside PC Gamer’s contrasting combat and technical notes rather than treating either as a universal prediction.
