On2 VP6 is a lossy video codec best known for its use in Flash video. It compresses video by predicting image blocks from reference frames, encoding the differences that remain, and applying motion compensation, entropy coding, and adaptive filtering. Its design also separates motion data from residual data, which can help a decoder organize its work.

What VP6 is and where it was used

On2 Technologies released VP6 for video compression; the company’s 2009 Form 10-K says a beta launched in May 2003 and the official version followed in October 2003. Adobe later recommended VP6 for Flash video intended for Flash Player 8 and later. These are historical milestones, not evidence of current browser or operating-system support. On2 Technologies’ 2009 Form 10-K; Adobe Flash Professional Help (archived CS6 documentation).

VP6 was used prominently in Flash video, including FLV files. Adobe’s Flash Video File Format Specification 10.1 identifies FLV video CodecID 4 as On2 VP6 and CodecID 5 as VP6 with alpha. In its QuickTime media-type discussion, the specification lists VP6F, VP6A, VP60, VP61, and VP62. These identifiers apply to the format contexts described by Adobe; they are not all interchangeable filename extensions. Adobe Flash Video File Format Specification 10.1.

How VP6 compresses a frame

Predicting blocks and encoding the difference

Instead of encoding every frame as a complete, independent image, VP6 can use similarities between frames. The encoder divides a frame into blocks and predicts a block’s contents from a reference image. A motion vector describes where the matching image content is located; the codec then encodes residual information—the difference between the prediction and the block being represented. Because VP6 is lossy, decoding does not reproduce the original source exactly.

Filtering prediction blocks

VP6 has a prediction loop filter that works on copied prediction blocks when a coded motion vector crosses a block boundary. The filter smooths edges passing through the copied block; it does not filter the reconstructed reference buffer itself. On2 engineer Paul Wilkins explained that this avoids cumulative artifacts such as blurring from repeatedly filtering that buffer, while applying filtering where motion makes it useful. This account comes from the codec developer’s technical overview, not a complete normative bitstream specification. Paul Wilkins, “The On2 VP6 codec: how it works,” EE Times, October 29, 2008.

Separating motion data from residual data

VP6 places prediction modes and motion vectors in one bitstream partition and residual error information in another. A decoder can use that separation to divide prediction and residual work, or coordinate the two streams as it processes macroblocks. It is a way to organize decoding, not a guarantee that a particular player will use multiple processors.

How VP6 codes data and handles sub-pixel motion

Arithmetic coding and VLC

VP6 supports context-predictive binary arithmetic coding and variable-length coding (VLC). Wilkins describes arithmetic coding as potentially more efficient at low data rates. VLC can reduce decoding work in cases such as the large residual partitions described for VP6-S. These are design explanations from On2, not independent performance measurements. EE Times.

Choosing a motion-compensation filter

A motion vector can point between whole-pixel locations. The decoder must interpolate samples to form the predicted image at that sub-pixel position. VP6 supports bilinear interpolation and a set of 4-tap filters. An encoder can select a filter for a frame or signal adaptive selection at block level. Wilkins describes the aim as balancing sharpness against noise and blockiness.

VP6-E and VP6-S profiles

Wilkins’s 2008 overview describes VP6-E as the original profile and VP6-S as an encoder profile aimed at HD material. Their described differences include filtering choices and the use of VLC:

Profile Filter choices described by On2 Other coding choice
VP6-E Can adaptively choose between a 4-tap and 2-tap filter for each macroblock. The overview does not state a distinct VLC arrangement for this profile.
VP6-S Restricts sub-pixel filtering to bilinear. Can selectively use VLC for a large residual partition, reducing some decoding costs.

On2’s article says VP6-S was designed to reduce decoder complexity and describes decoding-side compatibility with Flash’s existing VP6 support. That historical statement does not establish compatibility in every contemporary browser, operating system, or media player. EE Times.

What Adobe said about VP6 versus Sorenson Spark

In its archived Flash authoring guidance, Adobe said VP6 offered higher quality than Sorenson Spark at the same data rate and supported an 8-bit alpha channel for compositing. Adobe also warned that VP6 took longer to encode and required more client processing power to decode, and suggested Sorenson Spark for audiences using older computers. This is a period-specific comparison for Flash authoring and playback; it does not establish a present-day ranking against Sorenson Spark or modern codecs. Adobe Flash Professional Help (archived CS6 documentation).

What the historical performance claims do—and do not—show

On2’s 2009 Form 10-K says the company claimed VP6 improved image quality by 40% and playback speed by 50% compared with its preceding VP5 technology. Those are company-reported historical comparisons; the filing does not make them independent modern benchmarks. The same filing described VP6 as the company’s most widely deployed technology because of Flash 8 use at that time, which is historical adoption context, not a current usage statistic.
