Anki can connect to note-taking tools, but it does not provide a built-in, general-purpose bridge that keeps an Anki collection and a knowledge base in sync. AnkiWeb synchronizes Anki collections across devices; linking Anki to notes such as Obsidian Markdown usually means adding AnkiConnect and a separate app-specific plugin or file workflow. That gap is real, but “Anki can’t talk to your notes” is too absolute: integrations exist, and they vary in what they sync, how safely they update cards, and what they require.
What “sync” means in Anki—and what it doesn’t
AnkiWeb sync is for keeping an Anki collection synchronized across devices, not for connecting that collection to every note-taking app. Anki says reviews and note edits made in different locations can usually be merged, with exceptions documented in its sync manual. That solves a different problem from keeping a Markdown note and a flashcard in agreement.
For example, a student might keep lecture notes in Obsidian and want changes to a question in a Markdown file to update its Anki card without losing review history. Collection sync alone does not establish that relationship. A separate workflow must identify which note belongs to which card, decide which version wins when both are edited, and handle deletions.

Use Anki’s text-file export and import
Anki supports a file-based round trip. You can export notes as text, edit the file, and import it to update existing notes under documented conditions: the first field must remain unchanged and the same note type must be used. During import, Anki lets you map file columns to note fields. Preserving a note’s GUID can also let Anki recognize it for duplicate checking and updates. See the export documentation and text-file import documentation for the details.
#1 Best Overall
This approach is useful for bulk edits or occasional transfers. It is not a continuously linked knowledge base: you export and import files, and the documented matching rules determine whether Anki updates an existing note. If the identifying data or note type changes, an update may not behave as intended.
Use an API-based workflow
Anki’s manual points people seeking an API solution to AnkiConnect, an add-on that exposes Anki functions for other software to use. The route is available, but it is not the same as a native connection built into Anki’s collection sync. The manual’s self-hosted sync server documentation also describes self-hosting as an advanced feature intended for individual or family use, and cautions that third-party sync servers can lag behind protocol changes.

How Obsidian integrations bridge the gap
Obsidian’s community plugin directory lists several ways to work between Markdown notes and Anki. Their descriptions are useful for understanding the options, but they are plugin claims rather than independent test results. The approaches differ in direction, card formats, update safeguards, and setup:

| Anki Forge | Create or update cards from Markdown, preview changes before applying them, and bring Anki edits back when opening a note. | Desktop Obsidian, desktop Anki, and AnkiConnect; Anki must be open during sync. The listing says card text and media go only to the configured AnkiConnect endpoint. |
| Anki Flashcard Sync | Author cloze, question-and-answer, code-practice, and image-occlusion cards in Markdown. Its listing describes stable IDs intended to preserve review history when cards are updated. | Desktop requirements apply. Consult the listing for its specific setup and compatibility details. |
| Anki AST Sync | Sync the current note or a vault, with dry-run commands described in its listing. | Desktop Anki and AnkiConnect are prerequisites. |
These are separate community plugins, not one shared integration standard. Obsidian provides a community plugin ecosystem, as described in its help center, but the directory entries do not establish that every feature works the same way or that a given workflow preserves history in all circumstances.
What to check before choosing a workflow
The hard part is not just moving text between apps. Decide how the connection should behave when notes change, and verify the plugin’s documented behavior before applying updates to a collection you care about.
- Direction: Does the workflow only create or update Anki cards from notes, or can edits made in Anki return to the source note?
- Identity and review history: How does it recognize an existing card during an update? If preserving review history matters, look for an explicit stable-ID mechanism rather than assuming matching text is enough.
- Preview and recovery: Can you preview additions, changes, and deletions or run a dry run? Keep a backup before a large update, especially when the plugin’s deletion behavior is unclear.
- Content support: Check whether the workflow handles the formats you actually use—such as cloze cards, media, math, code, tags, or formatting. Feature support can differ by plugin.
- Setup and availability: Confirm desktop requirements, AnkiConnect setup, and whether Anki needs to remain open. The cited examples describe desktop-based workflows, not a universal mobile-to-mobile connection.
- Conflicts and deletions: Establish what happens if the same card is edited in both apps, or if a source note is removed. Do not assume collection sync resolves conflicts between a plugin and a Markdown file.
Why this is a product gap, not proof that integration is impossible
Anki has collection sync, a text-file import/export path, and an API route through AnkiConnect. Obsidian’s plugin directory includes integrations that describe Markdown-to-card workflows and, in one case, bringing Anki edits back into a note. So the categorical claim that Anki cannot talk to notes is inaccurate.
Rank #4
The narrower gap is in the experience: a reader who wants notes and cards to stay connected has to assemble a workflow from an add-on and app-specific plugins or file handling, then understand identity, history, conflicts, and deletion behavior. A dependable, broadly supported connection with clear setup and predictable ownership of edits would address that friction. The sources do not quantify how many users run into it; an individual Anki user’s custom workflow is an example, not evidence of a category-wide failure rate.
