Magnetic stripes are being phased out, but there is no single worldwide date when every card will stop working or every terminal will stop accepting a swipe. Mastercard’s timetable is regional and staged: newer payment methods are taking over, while the network’s rules set different deadlines for different markets and card types.
Why magnetic stripes are being phased out
A magnetic stripe carries payment data differently from an EMV chip. Mastercard says chip use has reduced reliance on stripes, while EMVCo explains that a chip transaction checks card authenticity and generates a one-time security code. That code makes copied stripe data less useful for counterfeiting a card-present transaction.
EMVCo describes its chip specifications as a blueprint for consistent in-store payments around the world. Its overview also reports 15.6 billion EMV chip payment cards in use and says EMV chip powered 96% of in-store transactions globally; EMVCo attributes those figures to Mastercard. The live page does not establish a reporting period here, and the figures describe chip adoption—not the share of stripes already retired. EMVCo’s contact-chip overview
What replaces a swipe
| Method | How it reaches the terminal | Transaction security |
|---|---|---|
| Magnetic stripe | Swipe the card through a reader. | Does not use the EMV chip transaction method described by EMVCo, which generates a one-time security code. |
| Contact chip | Insert or dip the card into a reader. | The chip validates card authenticity and generates a one-time security code for the transaction. |
| Contactless | Tap a contactless card or an NFC-enabled mobile device. | Uses a similar one-time-code mechanism to contact-chip payments. |
The exact method a shopper can use depends on whether the merchant’s terminal supports it. The phaseout does not mean payments become card-free: contact-chip and contactless cards are still physical cards, and NFC-enabled phones can also make contactless payments. EMVCo’s contact-chip overview and EMVCo’s contactless overview explain the two chip methods.

Mastercard’s phaseout dates—and what they do not mean
Mastercard’s 2021 announcement set out a gradual transition, not a universal shutdown of swipe payments. Its later rules specify deadlines for the SEPA region, with exceptions. These dates apply to Mastercard requirements only; they should not be treated as deadlines for Visa, other networks, every issuer, or every merchant terminal.
| Date or period | Mastercard requirement or announcement | Scope and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | New cards in most markets would no longer be required to have a stripe. | Stated in Mastercard’s 2021 announcement; this is not proof that all new cards became stripe-free on that date. |
| 2027 | U.S. banks would no longer be required to issue chip cards with stripes. | Stated in Mastercard’s 2021 announcement; it removes a requirement, rather than establishing that every issuer will stop issuing stripes then. |
| 1 April 2029 | Newly issued cards in SEPA must support EMV chip and omit the stripe. | Mastercard Rules dated 2 December 2025 specify exceptions for cards issued in Switzerland and non-reloadable prepaid cards. |
| By 2029 | Mastercard’s 2021 announcement said no new Mastercard credit or debit cards would be issued with stripes. | The announcement described U.S. and Canadian prepaid cards as exempt. This is an announced schedule, not the same wording or scope as the later SEPA rule. |
| 1 April 2033 | All issued cards in SEPA must omit the stripe. | Mastercard Rules dated 2 December 2025 retain exceptions for cards issued in Switzerland and non-reloadable prepaid cards. |
Because the schedule is staged, it does not establish that existing cards will stop working on one date. Nor does it show when an individual issuer will change its cards or when a particular merchant will stop supporting swipe transactions. Mastercard’s current Rules and its 2021 phaseout announcement describe different scopes and should be read accordingly.

What cardholders should expect
For a Mastercard holder, the practical change is that newer cards may rely on chip insertion or contactless payment rather than a stripe. A card with a stripe may still be present during the transition; the cited schedule does not specify when each issuer will remove it or when individual terminals will stop accepting swipes. If a payment method is unavailable at a particular checkout, use another method the terminal supports.

These are Mastercard-reported survey findings, not an independent census or evidence that all consumers prefer stripe-free cards. Mastercard’s announcement and survey findings

How long has the stripe lasted?
The stripe’s long coexistence with chip and contactless payments reflects a gradual change in how cards and terminals handle transactions. Chip and tap methods offer transaction security features that a copied stripe does not, but migration depends on network rules, issuers, card types, regions, and terminal support. Mastercard’s Cyber & Intelligence business president Ajay Bhalla said in the 2021 announcement, “It’s time to fully embrace these best-in-class capabilities, which ensure consumers can pay simply, swiftly and with peace of mind.” The announcement framed the transition as a move toward chip-based capabilities, not an overnight end to cards or swipe acceptance.
