No: an LLM should not decide whether a distributed lease is renewed, a peer is removed, or a new writer takes over. A lease is a time-bounded ownership claim; the coordination path that grants it needs explicit, bounded state transitions. A model may help interpret logs or summarize incidents, but the storage system must enforce who can write—and reject stale owners—without depending on inference.
What does a lease loop decide?
A lease gives one identified holder temporary authority over a named resource. A minimal lease record has three fields: the lease name, the current holder, and an expiry time. Add a monotonically increasing epoch—a fencing value that advances when ownership changes—and the state is explicit enough to reason about competing owners.
An acquisition or renewal should produce one of two clear outcomes: the current epoch if the operation succeeds, or no value if it fails. The caller must treat no value as loss of authority and stop acting as the writer. A model response is not a suitable substitute for that decision: it can be delayed, unavailable, malformed, or variable, and it adds an external dependency to a path that needs a definite answer.
That is a design boundary, not a claim that every inference request fails. Even a reliable model cannot make an ambiguous or delayed ownership decision safe. Coordination should remain deterministic; inference can observe and explain the system without granting authority over it.

How should acquisition and renewal work?
For a single-primary PostgreSQL setup, a lease table can make ownership transitions visible in one place. The following is a sketch of the core state, not a complete coordination protocol:
CREATE TABLE leases (
lease_name text PRIMARY KEY,
holder_id text NOT NULL,
epoch bigint NOT NULL,
expires_at timestamptz NOT NULL
);
Acquisition inserts the first epoch for a previously unseen lease, or claims an expired row while increasing its epoch. A conditional upsert can express that rule:
INSERT INTO leases (lease_name, holder_id, epoch, expires_at)
VALUES ($1, $2, 1, now() + interval '15 seconds')
ON CONFLICT (lease_name) DO UPDATE
SET holder_id = EXCLUDED.holder_id,
epoch = leases.epoch + 1,
expires_at = now() + interval '15 seconds'
WHERE leases.expires_at <= now()
RETURNING epoch;
If another holder still has an unexpired row, the conditional update does not run and the statement returns no row. A renewal is different: it must match both the lease name and the same holder, and only renew while the lease is still active. It preserves the epoch because it continues the same ownership term:

UPDATE leases
SET expires_at = now() + interval '15 seconds'
WHERE lease_name = $1
AND holder_id = $2
AND expires_at > now()
RETURNING epoch;
In these examples, 15 seconds is an illustrative TTL, not a recommended universal setting. A deployment must choose its expiry and renewal policy for its workload and failure model. Keep the database transactions short and make the time semantics explicit: PostgreSQL defines now() as the transaction-start timestamp, not a clock that advances throughout a long transaction. Its documentation distinguishes that from statement_timestamp(), which is fixed at statement start, and clock_timestamp(), which changes during statement execution.

How do fencing tokens prevent stale writers?
Expiry alone cannot prevent a paused former holder from waking up and issuing a delayed write. The epoch provides a way to distinguish a newer ownership term from an older one—but only if the write target checks it. Every mutation needs to carry the holder and epoch, and the resource accepting the write must reject a request that does not match active ownership.

When the write and lease live in the same PostgreSQL database, a write can conditionally select the active lease row as part of the mutation. For example, an order insert could use this shape:
INSERT INTO orders (order_id, payload)
SELECT $1, $2
FROM leases
WHERE lease_name = $3
AND holder_id = $4
AND epoch = $5
AND expires_at > now()
RETURNING order_id;
No returned row means the write did not pass the lease check. The caller must treat that as a rejected mutation, not as a transient success. The check belongs in the same database operation or a carefully designed atomic boundary; a separate “check lease, then write” sequence leaves room for ownership to change between the two actions. Keep the transaction short, and account for PostgreSQL’s transaction-start meaning of now() when defining expiry behavior.

This example does not automatically protect a separate queue, object store, or service. If a writer can bypass PostgreSQL and the external resource cannot see and reject stale epochs, that resource is not fenced by this lease row. The target itself must enforce the epoch, or the system needs another carefully designed atomic enforcement boundary. All mutating paths must obey the same rule.

Why keep inference out of the authority path?
Leader election and lease renewal need bounded state transitions whose result can be enforced. A chat-completion service adds latency and an external failure mode; its output also needs parsing and validation before software can act on it. Those are design concerns, not measured probabilities of failure. They are enough reason not to make inference the mechanism that renews ownership, drops a peer, or selects a new writer.
A useful failure drill is to make the inference provider unreachable and verify that the coordination path still behaves safely: holders renew only under the defined conditions, failed renewals stop the old holder, and stale writes are rejected. The drill should not depend on receiving a model response to determine whether the lease system is safe.
Keep any model-based observability downstream of authority. It may summarize logs, classify an incident for an operator, or help inspect evidence. Those outputs can inform human investigation, but they must not bypass the lease state transition or the storage-side fencing check.

Does this PostgreSQL sketch replace consensus?
No. It is a worked example for a limited deployment shape, not a multi-region consensus protocol. It does not resolve every failure mode involved in distributed ownership. The sketch leaves clock jumps, long garbage-collection pauses, and network partitions that leave a SQL session half-open outside its guarantees. Extending it to a multi-region write path would require a real consensus-backed design and a precise account of that system’s guarantees.
Coordination choices depend on deployment scope, how ownership expires, whether the write target can enforce a fencing revision, and how partitions and pauses affect liveness and stale-writer rejection. PostgreSQL advisory locks are application-defined; PostgreSQL leaves correct use to the application and documents both session-level and transaction-level lock semantics. For clustered coordination, systems such as etcd, Consul, and ZooKeeper offer different mechanisms; that list is not a feature ranking.
In the etcd v3.5 election API, leadership is tied to a lease. A transaction can check ownership using the leader key’s creation revision, and leadership transfers when the lease expires or is revoked. That is a documented API behavior, not a blanket guarantee for every application built on top of it: the write target still has to enforce the relevant ownership condition.
What can a CI import check establish?
A narrow source check can act as a tripwire for accidental inference coupling in a lease directory. For example, it can scan Python files for selected inference SDK imports, generic network clients, or known completion-call fragments. A review can also ask:
- Does the renewer import an inference SDK or an unnecessary generic network client in addition to its database dependency?
- Has the TTL been lengthened simply to wait for a model response?
- Can the failure drill pass while the inference provider is unreachable?
- Can an engineer explain the fencing rule without mentioning a model?
- Does every mutating call send an epoch to a storage system that actually enforces it?
Such a checker is heuristic. A local wrapper, indirection, or sidecar can hide a dependency from textual scanning. Passing the check cannot prove liveness, safety, or the absence of every form of inference coupling; it can only catch the specific patterns it searches for. Use it as one review aid alongside failure drills and tests of stale-writer rejection, not as a proof of correctness.
