For the 5-vs-5 battles in THE KING OF FIGHTERS AFK, Pocket Gamer’s editorial tier list puts Orochi Leona and Orochi Iori among its top Legendary picks. Treat that as a guide, not an official or universally confirmed ranking: its page shows an October 3, 2026 update label and version 1.12.0, but the accessible ranking snapshots include older placements. Your best choice depends on which fighters you can field, their rarity and upgrades, and the mode you are playing.

What this tier list ranks—and what it does not

THE KING OF FIGHTERS AFK is a mobile idle RPG with pixel-art fighters and strategic battles. Netmarble describes the game as a place to “Create your own team and take on the enemy strategically!” Its overview highlights 5-vs-5 brawls, but Story Stage formations and decks can work differently.

Pocket Gamer separates fighters into Unique (UQ) and Legend (LG) groups rather than treating every character as interchangeable. That matters in practice: a high-ranked Legend is not automatically a better choice for your current roster if you cannot summon, field, or upgrade that fighter yet. The guide itself notes that newer players may need to rely on Unique fighters while building a Legend roster.

The guide page displays “Updated on October 3rd, 2026 – Version: 1.12.0 – Added: Zero (Original), Whip.” However, the ranking text available in linked snapshots includes older June and August placements. The tiers below therefore reflect what that editorial guide lists in those snapshots; they should not be read as independently verified version 1.12.0 results. See Pocket Gamer’s THE KING OF FIGHTERS AFK tier list.

Unique fighters: useful options while building a roster

Pocket Gamer’s captured guide names Iori, Athena, Malin, Vice, Leana, Dolores, Bao, Hwa, Mature, Tizoc, Xiangfei, Chang, Goro, and Lucky among its better Unique options, with a separate lower group. The exact placements are subject to the same older-snapshot caveat as the Legend rankings.

Check the fighter’s rarity and style, not just the name. For example, the guide distinguishes Unique Athena from Legendary Athena (KOF ’98 Style). They are different entries, so a tier-list mention of “Athena” is not enough to identify which one is being discussed.

Why the top-ranked fighters stand out in the guide

Orochi Leona and Orochi Iori

The guide highlights both near the top of its Legend rankings. It attributes an ally ATK effect to Orochi Leona’s Owned Effect and healing to Orochi Iori’s effect. These are the guide’s character descriptions, not results from a published comparative performance test.

Legendary Athena (KOF ’98 Style)

Pocket Gamer describes this Athena as a strong buffer. That can make her appealing when your team benefits from ally support, but the description should not be confused with the separate Unique Athena (KOF XI Style).

The King Of Fighters 2000 (Limited Run #386) - For PlayStation 4
  • All-new "Active Striker" system.
  • Give assistance to your team members.
  • Nostalgic characters from the SNK Universe.
  • Hone your skills and strategy with your favorite strikers.
  • This item is limited to only 3,000 copies available worldwide.

KUSANAGI

The guide says KUSANAGI’s attacks consume health in exchange for damage and recommends pairing him with a healer. Its discussion also ties additional sustain to reaching 7 stars. That makes team support and investment relevant to his usefulness; his tier placement alone does not tell you whether he fits your current formation.

How to choose fighters for your own team

  1. Start with the mode. For the guide’s 5-vs-5 context, choose a workable five-fighter lineup. Do not assume the same ranking directly answers which fighters to deploy in a larger Story Stage formation.
  2. Use fighters you can actually field and build. Compare available Unique and Legend options in their own rarity context. A theoretical top Legend cannot help if it is not on your roster or is too underdeveloped for the content you are tackling.
  3. Balance roles and effects. Look at damage, healing, and ally buffs together. A damage-focused fighter with a health cost, such as the KUSANAGI described by the guide, may need a healer beside them; a buffer’s value depends on the rest of your lineup.
  4. Invest selectively. The guide advises against levelling every option beyond what is necessary and suggests some Unique fighters can serve early. Concentrate investment on fighters that help your present roster rather than treating every tier-list entry as a must-build.
  5. Reassess as the roster changes. New summons, upgrades, stars, and mode requirements can change which available combination works best. A tier is a starting point for comparison, not a universal team prescription.

Formation size varies by mode and update

The headline rankings are most directly useful for comparing fighters in the 5-vs-5 battle context described on Netmarble’s game overview. They should not be taken as a recommendation for every mode’s formation size.
