Data centers can contain several distinct gas hazards, but they are not one ever-present cloud and not every facility has all of them. The main situations to understand are a fire-suppression system discharging into a protected room, hydrogen accumulating around certain UPS batteries, gases released during a lithium-battery incident, and refrigerant escaping from cooling equipment. Each calls for different detection, ventilation and emergency procedures.

Where gas hazards can arise

Some risks are associated with equipment designed to protect or cool a facility; others arise only during a fault or emergency. Routine operation, planned maintenance, a suppression-system discharge and a battery fire are different conditions, so a control designed for one should not be assumed to cover the others.

Situation Potential hazard When it matters
Gaseous fire suppression Oxygen deficiency, agent toxicity or decomposition products During or after a system discharge in a protected enclosure
UPS battery room Hydrogen and a potentially explosive mixture Where the battery chemistry and installation can generate hydrogen, especially if ventilation is inadequate
Lithium-battery incident Potentially harmful fire gases During a battery fire or thermal-runaway emergency; the gases present vary by incident
Cooling equipment Refrigerant exposure following a release If refrigerant-containing equipment leaks or is damaged

Fire-suppression gas: a discharge can make a room unsafe

Fixed gaseous suppression systems are used in some data-processing rooms because water can damage sensitive equipment. OSHA specifically identifies data-processing rooms among areas these systems protect, and warns that a total-flooding discharge can create an oxygen-deficient or toxic atmosphere. The agent and its decomposition products matter; “gas” does not mean harmless, and an electrically nonconductive agent is not necessarily safe to breathe. OSHA’s fixed-extinguishing-systems guidance describes the relevant workplace safeguards.

Carbon dioxide systems deserve particular caution. High concentrations can displace oxygen, and contact with vaporizing liquid CO2 can cause frostbite. EPA’s technical review notes that the minimum design concentration for CO2 total-flooding fire suppression is lethal. Its natural presence in ordinary air is not a reason to treat a suppression discharge as safe. See EPA’s review of carbon dioxide as a fire suppressant.

What protects workers

For U.S. workplaces, OSHA requires safeguards against exposure to toxic levels of extinguishing agent or decomposition products. Depending on the system and hazard, safeguards include pre-discharge alarms and activation arrangements, entrance signs where serious health hazards are present, and instruction for workers who may enter the protected area. Workers need to know the alarm, evacuation route and system hazards; the agent’s safety data sheet should be available. Facility procedures also need to address access, discharge response and clearance before re-entry.

UPS batteries: hydrogen is a ventilation issue where present

Some UPS battery installations can release hydrogen. If it accumulates in sufficient concentration, it can form an explosive mixture; inadequate ventilation is the concern, not a claim that every battery room contains a dangerous atmosphere. Battery chemistry, equipment design and installation determine what is generated and in what circumstances.

A U.S. EPA facilities engineering manual revised in 2006 says UPS battery rooms should be well ventilated to prevent an explosive hydrogen mixture from accumulating. It also discusses monitoring, emergency facilities and maintaining fan operation on emergency power. This is an engineering reference, not a universal statement of current code requirements: operators should assess the actual installation and follow the applicable code and authority having jurisdiction. EPA Facilities Manual, Volume 2.

Lithium-battery fire gases: plan for an incident, not a routine inventory

A lithium-battery fire can release harmful gases, and a fire may be difficult to extinguish or may reignite. EPA incident-response guidance recommends using modeling to inform decisions and initially considering monitoring for hydrogen, carbon monoxide, hydrogen fluoride, hydrogen cyanide and hydrogen chloride. As an incident continues, it advises sampling for metals and other combustion byproducts from burning plastics. This is an emergency-response monitoring list, not evidence that every gas appears in every fire or is present in an ordinary data center.

EPA’s account of the January 16, 2025 fire at the Moss Landing battery energy-storage facility says about 1,200 residents were evacuated for 24 hours. EPA reports that air monitoring and sampling during and after the incident found no risks to public health. That event involved a battery energy-storage facility; it should not be treated as a measurement of exposure at a typical data center. EPA’s battery energy-storage safety and incident-response guidance.

Refrigerants: a separate cooling-equipment concern

Refrigerants are contained in cooling equipment, and a release can create a hazard. The refrigerant and risk depend on the equipment and installation; no single refrigerant or universal leak risk applies to all data centers.

For specified new data-center, computer-room air-conditioning and IT-equipment cooling categories, EPA’s sector table lists a 700 global-warming-potential limit beginning January 1, 2027. Applicability depends on the covered product, rule scope and exceptions. This is a transition for specified products, not a requirement to replace every installed cooling system on that date. Check EPA’s current Technology Transitions sector restrictions and the governing rule for the applicable details.

Detection and response must match the actual hazard

There is no single gas detector or ventilation approach that covers all the situations above. Facility operators should base controls on the installed battery chemistry, suppression agent, cooling equipment, room use and adopted codes. NFPA 855’s described scope for stationary energy storage systems includes detection, ventilation, suppression, explosion control and thermal-runaway topics; operators should verify the edition adopted in their jurisdiction. Why smell cannot establish that an area is safe

Hydrogen sulfide is not established as a routine data-center hazard, and its presence should not be inferred from the equipment described here. It illustrates a broader limit of odor-based checks: OSHA warns that olfactory fatigue can quickly remove the smell of H2S while the gas remains. Where H2S is a relevant workplace or confined-space concern, OSHA calls for suitable direct-reading instruments, atmospheric monitoring and safe work and rescue procedures—not reliance on smell. OSHA’s guidance on evaluating and controlling hydrogen sulfide exposure.

What is and is not known about data-center gas incidents

The U.S. OSHA and EPA references describe workplace safeguards, engineering guidance and battery incident response; they do not establish how often gas-related injuries, releases or near misses occur specifically in data centers. OSHA provisions cited here apply to U.S. federal workplaces; state-plan rules, local fire codes, facility design and the authority having jurisdiction may add requirements. A site assessment should therefore start with the actual equipment and applicable local rules, not an assumed universal hazard profile.
