ENTENCY GNS has moved beyond local multi-node experiments to a more demanding test: can a completely fresh node discover and establish a trustworthy path into the network over real internet connections? The project’s update describes foundational work toward that goal, but says the independent-bootstrap test has not yet passed.
Why localhost is not enough
A group of nodes communicating on one machine or local network proves that components can work together under controlled conditions. It does not show that a new node can find peers across the public internet, where routers, NAT, firewalls, changing addresses, temporary connections, and machines going offline can all interfere.
A fresh node faces an additional problem before it can connect: it needs a trustworthy way to learn where to begin. A configured development peer can help during testing, but relying on one would not demonstrate independent discovery.

ENTENCY describes GNS as distributed infrastructure beneath ENTENCY UP, its browser and workstation runtime. The project overview says GNS is intended to support peer discovery and communication, alongside areas such as authenticated transport, identity, storage, streaming, compute coordination, hosting, reputation, accounting, state, and diagnostics. In its development update, the author reports work on several foundations for connecting beyond localhost:
- Transport identity: persistent Ed25519 identities and authenticated connection establishment.
- Bootstrap handling: health tracking and retries for bootstrap seeds—the starting points a node can consult to learn about the network.
- Endpoint management: classifying candidate paths rather than treating every discovered address as reachable.
- NAT traversal groundwork: UPnP discovery and mapping with lifecycle handling, renewal, expiry, and cleanup.
- Learned information controls: tracking provenance and freshness, and bounding learned bootstrap information so malformed or conflicting data does not automatically become trusted network state.
These are reported implementation steps, not evidence that a fresh node has connected successfully through public internet infrastructure. ENTENCY development update

Discovery, authentication, and connection are different steps
It helps to separate three events that can otherwise sound like one:
- Discovery: a node learns an address or another candidate location where it might try to connect.
- Authentication and verification: it checks the peer’s identity and evaluates whether the candidate path is credible.
- Connected state: the node establishes a usable connection over that path.
ENTENCY’s update makes the distinction explicit: “knowing an address is not the same as proving reachability.” An externally observed address, for example, does not establish that another machine can make an incoming connection to the node. UPnP mapping may help in some network setups, but the update’s mention of mapping and lifecycle handling is not a claim that every router, firewall, or NAT configuration will permit inbound traffic. What the fresh-node baseline shows—and does not show
The update says the reported local fresh-node baseline returned NO_BOOTSTRAP_KNOWLEDGE. ENTENCY says components exist and that knowledge can be propagated and persisted, but that baseline still lacks independent external bootstrap knowledge for discovering the wider network. In practical terms, the node cannot demonstrate self-directed entry if it has no trustworthy starting information and must instead depend on a manually configured development peer.
This is a useful distinction between building the machinery and validating the complete path. Identity, endpoint classification, seed health tracking, and persistence can all be present while the key end-to-end question—whether an isolated new node can find an initial peer and reach it—remains unanswered.

The next test: enter without a development shortcut
The milestone ENTENCY states is to start a fresh GNS node on a machine that knows nothing about the network and let it find a path in without a manually configured development peer or a localhost assumption. The update presents this as the next test, not as a completed result. It does not report public-network success, measured connection rates, latency, scale, or a comparison of bootstrap strategies. Relevant evidence would include independent availability of bootstrap information, authentication of the peer’s identity, verification that a path can carry a usable connection, and enough diagnostics to explain failures. The update does not provide public-internet results against those criteria, so the status remains a development milestone rather than a demonstrated production capability.

What this means for readers
For developers following ENTENCY, the update marks a shift in emphasis: local coordination is no longer the central challenge; reliable first contact across uncontrolled networks is. The reported work addresses important parts of that challenge, especially the separation of candidate endpoints from verified connectivity and the handling of bootstrap data as information that needs provenance and freshness.
For now, treat public-internet self-discovery as unresolved. The project’s own account does not establish that a fresh GNS node has joined using independently available bootstrap infrastructure, and it does not establish production readiness. ENTENCY development update
