A common introductory GIS framework groups geographic questions into five types: what is at a place, where a condition is met, what has changed, what spatial patterns exist, and what might happen under a changed scenario. These prompts help shape an investigation; they are not a universal taxonomy or a prescribed list of GIS tools.

What makes a question geographic?

A geographic information system (GIS) links information to locations and can analyze and display data in geographic context. That context lets you ask not only what a data record says, but where something occurs, what it is near or related to, how it varies across space, and how it changes over time.

For example, observations of a rare plant at several locations may reveal shared conditions such as slope, elevation, and rainfall. Combining mapped farm, stream, elevation, and rainfall data can also help identify streams that may carry fertilizer downstream. In each case, location makes it possible to investigate relationships that a list of records alone would not show. USGS explains GIS through examples of geographically referenced data.

The five basic GIS question types

The framework below is commonly taught as an introduction to GIS inquiry. It is attributed to Esri (1992) by the GIS Commons e-text, rather than independently verified here against the original Esri publication. GIS Commons presents the five prompts.

Question type Focus Kind of answer sought Example
What is at…? A particular place An inventory of features or attributes What is at the corner of Main Street and 12th Avenue?
Where is it? Locations meeting a condition A set of qualifying places Which vacant commercial parcels are larger than five acres and within half a mile of a freeway on-ramp?
What has changed since…? A place or feature across time A temporal comparison Which wetlands have decreased in area over ten years?
What spatial patterns exist? Geographic distribution or relationships A description or comparison of spatial variation How does rainfall vary with elevation, or where are measured values high and low?
What if…? A scenario with changed assumptions or parameters A conditional projection How might an area’s population change if a freeway were built under different constraints?

“What is at…?” asks for a place-based inventory

Start with a known location and ask which features or attributes are associated with it. The answer might be a list of mapped features, a set of characteristics, or a value recorded at that place.

“Where is it?” finds locations that qualify

Instead of starting from a specific place, define what a suitable location must satisfy. Conditions may combine attributes and spatial relationships, such as parcel size and distance from a freeway ramp.

“What has changed since…?” compares time periods

Choose a time span and compare the relevant geographic data. The result can show where a feature appeared, disappeared, expanded, contracted, or otherwise changed, provided the data support a meaningful comparison.

“What spatial patterns exist?” examines distribution and relationships

Look for concentrations, geographic differences, or relationships among mapped variables. A pattern question could compare rainfall with elevation or identify areas with especially high or low measurements.

“What if…?” explores a conditional scenario

Change a model parameter or assumption and examine the resulting projection. The output describes what may follow under that scenario; it does not establish that the scenario will happen or that the projection is certain.

Are these the only GIS question types?

No. The five prompts are a useful introductory framework, not the one universal classification used by every GIS reference. Other learning materials break questions down into more specific forms, including how many features are in an area, which sites meet criteria, what characterizes an area, how something is distributed, what is near or on top of something else, how features are related, and what appears in an image. ArcGIS Online lists these practical analysis questions.

The forms can overlap. Finding suitable sites, for example, can be both a “Where is it?” question and a question about which locations satisfy multiple conditions. Choose the wording that best clarifies the information you need rather than trying to force every project into a single exclusive category.

How to use the framework in a GIS project

  1. Frame the question. State the place, conditions, comparison period, relationship, or scenario you want to investigate.
  2. Explore and visualize relevant data. Check what geographic information is available and whether it covers the places, attributes, and time periods the question requires.
  3. Refine the scope and choose methods. Select analysis methods only after the question and data are clear; the wording of the question does not itself prescribe a tool.
  4. Inspect and interpret the output. Consider whether data limitations, analytical methods, map choices, or assumptions could change the result.
  5. Revise if needed and document the interpretation. If the output does not answer the original question adequately, refine the question or use different data, methods, or parameters. Record what the result means before using or sharing it in a decision.

For a concise way to express GIS’s role in inquiry, the GIS Commons e-text attributes this statement to geographer Ron Abler (1988, 40): “GIS technology is to geographical analysis what the microscope, the telescope, and computers have been to other sciences…” GIS Commons includes the quotation.
