Its syntax, data rules, execution points and failure behavior therefore need to be consistent and explicit—not left to vary by feature.
Why a small engine has platform-wide consequences
In a September 27, 2026 DEV Community essay, author informat argues that an expression engine used across a platform is “not a feature. It is a language.” The essay lists computed fields, defaults, validation rules, visibility conditions, workflow branches, report and list filters, and automation thresholds as places where users may encounter expressions.
That breadth changes the design problem. Users need to transfer what they learn in one area to another. If expressions have different syntax, function behavior, type rules, error messages or evaluation timing in different subsystems, a formula that seems familiar may not mean the same thing everywhere. The essay captures the platform-wide effect with another line: “It is not one feature. It is six wearing a trench coat.”
These are the author’s architectural arguments, not the findings of an independent product comparison or benchmark. The practical questions below turn that argument into a checklist for anyone designing, choosing or governing a low-code platform.

Where should rules be enforced?
The essay recounts a distributor customer whose quoting application was intended to keep discounts below 30 percent unless an approval flag was set. According to informat, an 80 percent discount entered through a bulk import during a product-line migration, and the rule did not run because it was attached to form behavior rather than the import or write path. The author says a finance lead had written the rule. The essay provides no customer name, system records or independent corroboration, so this should be read as the author’s account, not as a verified case study or evidence about how often this failure occurs.
The architectural lesson is about where a rule lives. A condition that must hold for stored data should be enforced wherever data can be written, including forms, imports, APIs and automations. A visibility condition, by contrast, may need to run in the browser so a user gets immediate feedback while interacting with a form. These have different purposes and can have different execution needs.
Informat’s formulation is pointed: “The moment a rule is a property of a screen, you have shipped a suggestion, not a constraint.” When assessing a platform, ask which rules run in the browser and which run on the server’s write path, then verify whether imports and API writes receive the same enforcement as form submissions. The essay recommends server-side enforcement for validations, computed fields and workflow branches that protect data constraints; it does not establish that every expression in every system must run in one location.

How should formulas respond to schema changes?
A formula that refers to a field depends on that field continuing to exist with a usable meaning. The essay recommends treating those references as schema dependencies rather than opaque text. A dependency graph can help a platform identify formulas affected by a field rename or deletion.
For a platform or team, useful design questions include:
- Does the platform validate field references when a formula is saved?
- Can it identify affected expressions before a field is renamed or deleted?
- Can references be updated atomically when a rename is safe to propagate?
- If automatic repair is not possible, does the user receive a clear, actionable warning at the time of the change?
The goal is to avoid formulas that remain apparently intact in an editor but fail later at runtime. These are recommendations from the essay, not independently established requirements for every platform.

What should happen when values are missing?
Blank text, null, an untouched numeric field and numeric zero may represent different states. An expression system should define those distinctions rather than leave each feature or user to infer them. It should also explain what happens when a validation rule cannot reach a determinate result because required data is absent.
Informat says the author’s platform chose fail-closed behavior for a validation rule that could not evaluate its required data. That is one explicit policy, not a universal standard. When reviewing a system, look for documented behavior covering:

- Whether blank text and null are distinct.
- Whether an untouched numeric value differs from zero.
- Whether an indeterminate validation passes, fails or produces a separate error state.
- How users can diagnose missing inputs that prevent evaluation.
How strict should types and dates be?
The essay favors strict type handling: a numeric-looking string should not silently become a number. Explicit conversion functions make the transformation visible in the expression and reduce dependence on implicit coercion. A reader assessing an engine should check which conversions are allowed, how conversion errors are reported and whether behavior is consistent across features.

Date handling also needs clear semantics. Informat reports that the author’s platform distinguishes a zoned instant from a plain calendar date, so a timestamp such as a moment on a timeline is not treated as interchangeable with a date such as a birthday. The essay offers no test data or independent verification of the reported implementation; the useful design question is whether the platform documents how time zones and date-only values behave during evaluation.

A formula feature can expand gradually as users request more capabilities. The essay warns that adding scripting-like functions one by one can blur the boundary between a safe expression and a general-purpose program. Its proposed model keeps expressions focused on computation over the attached record, provides a whitelist of pure functions and makes access to other-table data explicit and permission-checked.
For work that needs broader behavior, the author recommends a separately governed scripting layer rather than quietly expanding the expression engine. This is a proposed security model; the essay does not include a threat model, audit or formal security review. When evaluating an implementation, ask what data an expression can read, whether those permissions are enforced, whether functions can cause side effects, and where more powerful execution is governed.

A practical review checklist
Before relying on expressions across a low-code platform, check the following design areas:
- Consistent semantics: Are syntax, functions, types, errors and evaluation timing aligned across features?
- Schema awareness: Are field references validated and affected formulas surfaced during renames or deletions?
- Explicit values: Are null, blank, zero, coercion and date behavior documented?
- Correct enforcement point: Do constraints run on all relevant write paths, not only on a particular screen?
- Bounded capabilities: Are functions pure and data access permission-checked, with broader scripting handled separately?
- Useful recovery: When an expression cannot be evaluated, does the user see an actionable explanation rather than a silent failure?
