The Expanse: Osiris Reborn has the ingredients for a compelling space RPG: a crisis on Eros, a crew with distinct roles, consequential choices, and tactical third-person combat. Those are announced features, not proof of a great finished game. Owlcat’s available descriptions make a promising case, but the writing, combat feel, and depth of its RPG systems remain to be judged in the released game.
What is The Expanse: Osiris Reborn?
The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is a single-player, third-person science-fiction action RPG from Owlcat Games, set in the universe of The Expanse. You play a Pinkwater Security mercenary whose shore leave on Eros is overtaken by a station-wide lockdown and a wider conspiracy. In an overview published by Xbox Wire on March 26, 2026, Owlcat community manager Gala Dolgikh describes the player and their twin witnessing a massacre on Eros before escaping aboard an experimental enemy ship. The official Steam listing says players can create and customize a captain as an Earther, Martian, or Belter. The setup links a personal survival story to the political tensions and locations of the wider solar system.
Why it has potential as a space RPG
A crew that could matter in and out of combat
The announced crew is more than a list of companions to bring into a firefight. Xbox Wire identifies Zafar as a mechanic, Regina as a character with networking skills and marksmanship, Teo as a medic, Michael as a mercenary, and the player’s twin as a close ally. Owlcat and Steam say crew members can contribute distinct skills, assist in combat, and support the player from outside the active squad. If those roles shape missions and relationships as well as combat, the crew could give the story a stronger sense of interdependence.

Choices tied to relationships
Xbox Wire says missions present consequential choices, while the Steam description says relationships with crew members can improve or deteriorate according to the player’s choices and leadership. Dolgikh writes in the Xbox Wire overview, “Each mission in The Expanse: Osiris Reborn presents you with a choice, one that may entail large long-lasting consequences.” That promise will matter most if decisions produce legible, lasting effects on the crew or the story—not just different dialogue in the moment.
Action with tactical tools
The announced combat is cover-focused, third-person gunplay supplemented by abilities, gadgets, companion actions, and real-time commands. Steam describes companion “Exploits” that let crew members take advantage of openings in combat. Xbox Wire also names systems included in the beta announcement: zero-gravity grenades, tactical scanning, and combat drones. Together, those elements suggest a combat loop with more decisions than aiming and firing; whether the tools feel varied and useful is still unproven.

Recognizable places across the solar system
The Steam listing names Ganymede, Ceres, Mars, and Luna among the locations. It describes environments that include ruined habitats and political strongholds, giving the game room to move between different communities and sources of conflict. The listed destinations establish a setting, but not how large or open the explorable areas will be.
What has—and has not—been established about Gamescom 2026
The title’s Gamescom framing should not be mistaken for confirmation of a particular show-floor reveal. The available official information establishes the game’s premise and announced systems, but does not verify a Gamescom showcase or its exact footage. A third-party YouTube result describes a Gamescom demo; without confirmation from Owlcat or Gamescom, it is not a reliable basis for claims about what was shown at the event.

More broadly, the announced features support an argument for potential, not a verdict on quality. The finished game will need to demonstrate that its choices have meaningful consequences, companions feel distinct, combat stays engaging, and the RPG systems work together.
Release window, beta, and access
Steam currently lists Q2 2027 as the planned release window; no exact launch date is established. Xbox Wire’s March 2026 overview used the broader wording “Spring 2027” and announced day-one availability with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. The more specific current window is the one shown on Steam, but release plans can change.

Xbox Wire announced a closed beta beginning April 22, 2026, for eligible Founders who purchased the Miller’s Pack or Collector’s Edition through the official game site. The announcement said the beta would include a full early-game mission. That start date has passed, and the available information does not establish whether participation is still open; check Owlcat’s official channels for current status.
Owlcat’s announcement links to wishlists on Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store, PlayStation Store, and Microsoft Store. Xbox Wire covers Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, and Xbox Cloud, and says the game will support Xbox Play Anywhere.
