“The DevOps Standard” here means The DevOps Standard: The Vendor-Neutral Model for the AI-Driven World, a DEVOPS INSTITUTE book published by PeopleCert on Oct. 1, 2026. It presents a shared model for understanding and improving software delivery—not a universally binding rulebook. The phrase “DevOps standard” can also refer to IEEE 2675, a separate standard, so the name of the publisher and work matters.

What the book’s model is meant to do

The book frames DevOps as an integrated operating model for software-enabled products and services. Marc Hornbeek, the book’s lead contributor, quotes its definition in his Oct. 2, 2026 DevOps.com article: “A socio-technical system that integrates people, process, and technology practices to support the efficient, safe, and reliable delivery of software-enabled products and services.” Marc Hornbeek’s article

The model connects two views of the same delivery system: nine practice pillars and a four-layer DevOps Architecture Blueprint. Continuous governance and feedback link delivery work with the value it is intended to produce and the organization’s learning. PeopleCert describes the wider model as bringing capabilities, architecture, governance, automation, orchestration, and measurement together. Its book has 17 chapters, according to the publisher’s description. PeopleCert’s book page

The nine pillars of practice

The pillars are the book’s organizing framework. They include people, process, and technology practices, and are presented as interdependent—not as a checklist requiring every organization to implement them in one prescribed order.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Leadership: direction and support for the delivery system.
  2. Collaborative Culture: ways of working across the people involved in delivery.
  3. Design for DevOps: designing products and systems with delivery and operation in view.
  4. Continuous Integration: integrating code changes as an ongoing practice.
  5. Continuous Testing: testing throughout delivery rather than relying only on a late-stage check.
  6. Elastic Infrastructure: infrastructure that can adapt to delivery and operational needs.
  7. Continuous Security: incorporating security into ongoing work.
  8. Continuous Delivery and Deployment: preparing and releasing changes through repeatable delivery practices.
  9. Continuous Monitoring and Observability: using operational signals to understand system behavior and inform response and improvement.

These short descriptions explain the role each pillar suggests; the book’s names are the framework itself, not a claim that the terms imply a single tool or implementation.

How a shared reference can help teams

PeopleCert’s advisor article argues that “DevOps” is used to mean different things in different organizations: deployment automation, culture, release approvals, or some combination. That can leave leaders without a stable vocabulary for discussing current capability, deciding what to improve, measuring progress, or clarifying ownership. The article’s author, Marc Hornbeek, writes: “A DevOps standard becomes useful when a field has grown large enough that people need a shared way to describe it.” DEVOPS INSTITUTE advisor article

This is the publisher’s rationale for the book, rather than independent evidence that adopting it improves delivery outcomes. Its stated value is a common reference for assessment and discussion while leaving methods and tools adaptable to business and technology context. A shared vocabulary can help teams compare what they mean by a capability; it does not by itself establish that a practice is working or that a delivery result has improved.

Use delivery questions to make the model actionable

DORA’s guidance on loosely coupled teams offers a practical way to examine delivery dependencies alongside any framework. It says teams should be able to make, test, and deploy changes without fine-grained coordination or dependence on other teams. DORA also stresses that both architecture and organizational structure matter; choosing a fashionable technology alone does not guarantee better delivery outcomes. Its guidance says, “Research from the DORA team shows that effective organizational and technical structures are predictors for achieving continuous delivery.” DORA guidance on loosely coupled teams

Use questions like these to investigate where work waits or becomes dependent, rather than treating a framework label as proof of capability:

  • Do changes need approval from teams outside the team making them?
  • Do releases require coordination across multiple teams, or can teams deploy independently?
  • Are testing stages blocked by another team’s systems, data, or schedule?
  • Where do handoffs and wait times occur between development, testing, security, and operations?
  • Can a team deploy a change without coordinating a larger release?
  • Do upstream failures repeatedly disrupt downstream teams?

These are assessment prompts drawn from DORA’s guidance, not measures or results reported for the newly published book.

How this book differs from DORA and IEEE 2675

These sources address related concerns in software delivery, but they have distinct purposes and levels of prescription. The available descriptions do not establish a direct crosswalk, equivalence, or replacement relationship.

Source Purpose Scope How prescriptive it is
The DevOps Standard (DEVOPS INSTITUTE/PeopleCert) A shared operating-model reference for understanding, assessing, and improving delivery. Nine practice pillars alongside a four-layer architecture blueprint, with governance and feedback connecting delivery, value, and learning. Presented as an adaptable reference without a universal implementation order.
DORA guidance Capability guidance grounded in research on software delivery. Delivery capabilities and organizational and technical conditions, including team coupling and dependencies. Guidance for examining capabilities; it is not the same kind of named operating-model book.
IEEE 2675 A separate formal DevOps standard. Reliable and secure systems, as identified in the available Carnegie Mellon search result. It is a distinct standard; detailed requirements are not established by the source available here. Carnegie Mellon’s IEEE 2675 reference

For readers encountering the phrase in a standards discussion, IEEE 2675 and the DEVOPS INSTITUTE book should not be conflated. The book offers a broad practice-and-architecture model; DORA supplies capability guidance; IEEE 2675 is a separate engineering standard.

Who may find the book useful

PeopleCert identifies leaders, practitioners, consultants, assessors, auditors, and educators as intended readers. It may be useful when an organization needs a shared vocabulary for discussing how its delivery practices, architecture, governance, automation, and measurement fit together. Teams should still judge practices against their own context and evidence of delivery performance rather than assume that adopting the model guarantees an outcome.

PeopleCert’s page says it offers a free copy delivered by email. That distribution detail does not establish that the book is available through other retailers.
