The Cornell case is a civil lawsuit alleging sexual assault, not a verdict or proof of criminal guilt. The online backlash has also reached beyond the people named in the complaint: The Free Press reported that a different man with the same name was mistakenly served and that his family was harassed. An Oct. 1, 2026, Reason opinion article framed the response as a social-media mob; that is the author’s characterization, not a verified count of people involved.
What happened in the Cornell Chi Phi lawsuit?
A plaintiff identified as Jane Doe filed a civil complaint in New York County on Sept. 16, 2026, over alleged events at the Chi Phi house on Oct. 19–20, 2024. The complaint names seven individual students, Cornell University, fraternity and sorority entities, and a bar operator as defendants. It asserts claims including sexual assault, negligence, and breach of contract, demands a jury trial, and seeks damages.
The complaint alleges that Doe had consumed alcohol before going to the house, was given alcohol and ketamine there, and experienced nonconsensual sexual acts. Those are allegations in a pleading, not facts established by a court. The complaint’s filing does not itself determine whether any defendant is liable.
Were the Cornell students charged with a crime?
Reason’s Oct. 1 article said the seven men named in the civil complaint had not been charged with a crime as of that publication date. The reporting available through Oct. 2 does not establish a later criminal-procedure update, so that statement should not be treated as a current status report. A civil complaint and a criminal charge are separate legal matters; neither should be inferred from the existence of the other.

Why is the lawsuit drawing social-media backlash?
Reason’s Oct. 1, 2026, article is opinion journalism arguing that online users have targeted the men named in the complaint and people unrelated to the case. Its headline calls the response a “deranged social media mob,” but that wording is the author’s opinion. The available reporting supports a reported mistaken-service incident and harassment of one unrelated family, not a verified census of harassers or the scale of a broader campaign.
Reason also discussed text messages reviewed by The New York Times, saying they suggest Doe initially described the sexual encounters differently. That account is indirect here: the Times report was not independently reviewed, and the messages do not resolve what happened. Reason itself acknowledged that they do not definitively clear anyone and that an assault could have occurred.

In a Sept. 29 commentary, Reason attributed to Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten a statement that Doe’s November 2024 sworn statement described drug use and sexual contact as voluntary, conscious, and consensual. The commentary also reported a decision to open a new investigation. The statement itself was not reviewed here, and the reported excerpt does not establish a legal conclusion about the civil claims or the allegations.
Was the wrong Matthew Ingalls served?
The Free Press reported that an unrelated 23-year-old active-duty Marine sergeant named Matthew Ingalls, who it says never attended Cornell, was mistakenly served a 101-page lawsuit intended for another person with the same name. The report said his family’s home address appeared on the docket. His mother, Victoria Ingalls, told The Free Press: “My family’s been terrorized, threatened, and harassed.” The report describes a serious mistaken-identity and privacy harm; it does not make the unrelated man a party to the allegations. His address and other contact details should not be circulated.

The Cornell Daily Sun editorial is campus opinion, just as Reason’s characterization of the online reaction is opinion. The complaint is a party’s pleading. Keeping those categories separate matters: the sources describe allegations, reporting, and arguments, but the materials available through Oct. 4, 2026, do not resolve the allegations or establish criminal guilt.
