To set up a coding environment, choose one first project, install the editor and the language tools that project requires, open a folder for the project, and run a small program. An editor such as Visual Studio Code (VS Code) is only one part of the setup: it does not include every programming language or create a complete project for you. Add Git when you need version history or collaboration.

What a coding environment includes

A coding environment is the collection of tools you use to create and run a project. It commonly includes an editor, the language runtime or compiler, project-specific dependencies, and sometimes version-control software such as Git.

VS Code is an editor, not a complete, universal programming kit. Its official getting-started guide notes that “VS Code doesn’t include a File > New Project dialog or preinstalled project templates.” You install the tools your chosen language needs separately.

Choose one language and first project

Start with what you want to build: for example, a small Python script or a JavaScript application. That choice determines which runtime, compiler, extensions, and dependencies to install. Avoid installing several languages or unrelated extensions “just in case”; add tools when your project or tutorial calls for them.

Install VS Code and open a project folder

  1. Install VS Code for your operating system. Use the official installation instructions. On Windows, the guide describes using the user installer; on macOS, it describes opening the DMG and moving VS Code to Applications; on Linux, it points to distribution-specific package instructions.
  2. Create a folder for the project. Pick a simple location you can find again, then open that folder in VS Code. The folder is the workspace that brings together your files, terminal, source control, and debugging tools. Open the folder rather than only an individual source file so project-level tools can work with the whole project.

If you are using a school- or work-managed device, installation options may be restricted by organizational policy. Check with your administrator before installing software.

Install the language tools your project needs

Python

Follow the official VS Code Python tutorial for installing the needed Python tooling, selecting an interpreter, creating a virtual environment, running code, and debugging. The tutorial uses python3 in macOS/Linux command examples and python on Windows. Use the command appropriate to your platform and the instructions for the Python installation you chose.

JavaScript with Node.js

For a local JavaScript project, install Node.js and npm, then follow the VS Code Node.js tutorial, which starts with a simple app.js. On Windows, Microsoft’s Node.js setup guidance recommends native Windows setup as the less complex starting route for new developers who want to begin learning quickly.

Windows: native setup or WSL?

Choose the environment that matches how you want to work. Native Windows is a straightforward route for learning with a Windows-based setup. Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) provides a Linux distribution and can be useful if you prefer a Bash workflow or want an environment closer to a Linux deployment target.

Keep the project files in the filesystem that matches where Node.js is installed: use the Windows filesystem for Node.js installed on Windows, or the Linux filesystem for Node.js installed in WSL. The shell, runtime, and project files should belong to the same environment; mixing Windows instructions with a WSL shell (or vice versa) can lead to confusing command and path problems.

Run a small first program

Before adding optional tools, confirm that the editor and runtime work together. Use the small program in your language’s official tutorial: for Python, follow the VS Code tutorial to run its example file; for Node.js, start with the tutorial’s app.js. A successful run confirms that you can open the project and execute code. If it fails, check that you installed the runtime for the same environment as your terminal and that you selected the intended interpreter or runtime.

Add Git when you need version history

Git keeps a history of changes and supports collaboration, but VS Code’s Source Control view does not mean Git is already installed. Microsoft’s Node.js guidance says Git must be installed separately for the VS Code Source Control panel to power version-control actions. Install Git when you are ready to track changes or work with others, following the setup instructions for your operating system and project.

Starting from an existing project

If you are joining an existing project, open its folder and read its README before installing dependencies or running commands. Follow the project’s language and framework instructions rather than assuming a new-project tutorial applies. GitHub’s guide to developing a project locally walks through setting up Git and running an example development server.

How do I create and run a new project?

Use this sequence: choose a project and language, install VS Code, open a folder for the project, install the required language runtime and tools, then run the tutorial’s smallest example. Add Git or other dependencies only when the project needs them. This keeps the setup focused and makes it easier to identify which step caused a problem.
