1. ExpressVPN: best when the extension should control the whole device
ExpressVPN is the most capable choice if you want a Chrome toolbar button but also need protection for applications outside Chrome. Its extension has two distinct modes, and confusing them leads to an inaccurate understanding of what it protects.
- Remote Control Mode: the extension controls the ExpressVPN app installed on Windows, macOS, or Linux. The app then protects device traffic.
- Proxy Mode: the extension operates independently and routes browser traffic only. The desktop app is not required.

2. NordVPN: best lightweight browser-only option
NordVPN explicitly describes its Chrome product as a proxy extension. That makes it straightforward and lightweight, but it also means the extension alone protects Chrome traffic—not other browsers, applications, or background connections.
Install it through the Chrome Web Store, click the NordVPN logo in Chrome’s toolbar, and sign in with your Nord Account. Once connected, open the extension and select Disconnect to stop routing traffic through the proxy.
One useful control is the exclusion list: NordVPN extension → Settings → Connection → Exclude from a VPN proxy. This is useful when a particular website fails to load or rejects the proxy, while the rest of Chrome remains connected.

NordVPN is a good fit for people who want a clean location switch without installing or managing a desktop VPN. It is less suitable if your requirement is protection for an email client, game, torrent program, or every browser on the computer. 3. Surfshark: best range of browser-level controls
Surfshark’s Chrome extension requires an active subscription, but it provides an unusually broad group of browser privacy and anti-tracking settings.
Installation
- Open the Chrome Web Store and select Add to Chrome.
- Confirm with Add extension.
- Open Chrome’s Extensions puzzle-piece icon and pin Surfshark with the pin button.
- Click the Surfshark toolbar icon and sign in.
- Select Connect, or open Locations to select a country.
Depending on availability, the location screen includes Static IP and Dedicated IP sections. Browser settings include Default location, Auto-connect, Geo-spoofing, WebRTC, Block ads and trackers, Block cookie pop-ups, Block malicious sites, Warn about breached sites, and Email scam checker.
Geo-spoofing and WebRTC settings can reduce disagreements between your proxy address and browser location signals. They do not turn the extension into a full-device VPN. Other applications remain outside the extension unless you also use Surfshark’s desktop application.

Choose it if: you want more than a country selector and prefer an extension with built-in blocking and browser privacy tools.
4. Proton VPN: best reputable free-plan candidate
Proton VPN does have a Chrome extension; claims that Proton offers no Chrome extension are outdated. It works with Chrome and Chromium-based browsers including Edge, Brave, Opera, and Vivaldi. Proton documents support for Chromium 108.0 and later.
Install it with Chrome Web Store → Add to Chrome → Add extension. To pin it, right-click Chrome’s Extensions icon and select Pin beside Proton VPN. Sign in, then use Quick Connect or search for a country or server.
Proton describes the extension as protecting browser traffic only. Each Chromium-based browser using the extension counts as one VPN connection under the stated device limit.

5. Windscribe: best free feature set
Windscribe advertises a free Chrome extension that does not require an email address or credit card for its free setup, subject to its fair-use policy. TechRadar describes the free plan as having a 10 GB monthly data allowance, but allowances and account conditions can change, so check Windscribe’s current terms before relying on that number.
The extension’s strength is the number of browser-specific tools:
- Cookie Monster: removes first- or third-party cookies when a tab closes.
- Do Not Disturb: suppresses notification requests.
- WebRTC Slayer: blocks WebRTC leaks.
- Location Warp: helps prevent browser location requests from exposing your physical location.
- Time Warp: aligns browser time-zone behavior with the proxy.
- Language Warp: aligns language and locale signals with the proxy.
- Split Personality: rotates the user agent to reduce some fingerprinting signals.

6. Private Internet Access: best for granular settings
Private Internet Access describes its Chrome extension as an HTTPS proxy affecting Chrome or Firefox traffic only. It says communication between the browser and PIA uses TLS 1.3 and that plaintext WebSockets are not supported.
Install it through Chrome Web Store → Add to Chrome → Add extension, open the extension, sign in, select Current Region, and click the power button.
Open PIA extension → three vertical dots → Extra Features or PIA extension → three vertical dots → Extension Settings to find controls such as:
- Block WebRTC IP Detection
- Block camera, microphone, and location access
- Disable network prediction
- Disable credit card and address autofill
- Disable third-party cookies
- Disable website referrer and hyperlink auditing
- Remove UTM parameters
- Bypass List
- Smart Location

What a Chrome VPN extension actually protects
For most providers, the boundary is simple:

An extension is therefore useful for a browser-only task—such as checking a local version of a website or protecting Chrome on public Wi-Fi—but it is the wrong tool when you need every application covered. Install and connect the provider’s desktop app for that requirement.
How to install and manage a VPN extension in Chrome
- Open the Chrome Web Store.
- Search for the provider and verify the publisher before installing. Avoid similarly named copies.
- Select Add to Chrome, then confirm with Add extension.
- Select Chrome’s Extensions puzzle-piece icon and pin the VPN for quick access.
- Open it, sign in, and connect to a location.
- Visit a site such as an IP-checking service to confirm the apparent location has changed.
Chrome does not allow extensions to be added while you are browsing as a guest or in Incognito mode. A work- or school-managed installation may also block installation.
Manage installed extensions at Chrome menu ⋮ → Extensions → Manage extensions. An extension’s Details page lets you enable or disable it, alter site access, and allow Incognito use.
To permit a VPN extension in Incognito, use Chrome menu ⋮ → Settings → Extensions → select the extension → Details → Allow in Incognito. This only permits the extension to run in that window. It does not make you anonymous, hide activity from the VPN provider, or remove the extension’s permissions.
Common problems and how to fix them
WebRTC exposes an address
WebRTC can expose IP information through browser media APIs even when the visible web traffic uses a proxy. Turn on the provider’s browser control where available: ExpressVPN’s Block WebRTC, Surfshark’s WebRTC setting, Windscribe’s WebRTC Slayer, or PIA’s Block WebRTC IP Detection. This is a browser-level mitigation, not proof that every DNS, IPv6, application, or network leak is prevented.
Chrome stops loading pages
Disable other proxy extensions first. Antivirus HTTPS scanners, corporate web filters, Chromebook policies, desktop VPNs, and manually configured system proxies can also conflict. Test with only one proxy controller enabled.
A site shows a CAPTCHA or refuses to work
The website may recognize a VPN address, dislike a sudden country change, or detect contradictory location, language, time-zone, and WebRTC signals. Try another server, turn off the extension for that site, or add it to a provider’s bypass/exclusion list. PIA exposes a Bypass List; NordVPN provides proxy exclusions.

The VPN connects but streaming still fails
Streaming services actively block known VPN endpoints. Switching servers may help, but no extension can guarantee access to a particular catalogue. Also remember that a browser proxy does not change the location seen by a streaming app outside Chrome.
The extension cannot be installed
Check whether Chrome is managed by an employer or school. Administrators can block extensions or enforce proxy policies. On a personal computer, verify that you are not in Guest mode or trying to install from an Incognito window.
How to choose safely
Do not select an extension solely because it is free or carries a Chrome Web Store badge. Before installing, check the developer identity, requested permissions, privacy policy, maintenance history, and independent testing. A VPN extension may be able to read or modify data on websites you visit, and a store badge is not an independent security audit.
Prefer a provider that clearly explains whether its product is a proxy, a full VPN tunnel, or a hybrid. Treat unusually broad permissions and unknown developers as warning signs. Free products may impose data caps, restrict locations, show advertising, provide limited support, or collect more information than users expect.
