For fewer crowds, try a weekday outside the late-morning and mid-afternoon peaks. USDA time-use data found grocery shopping was somewhat more common on weekends, with shopping activity concentrated around late morning. Those figures are a national baseline—not a live forecast for your local store. For fresher-looking produce, inspect the items rather than assuming a supermarket is best at opening time; the evidence-backed early-morning advice applies specifically to farmers markets.
When is the grocery store least busy?
The best starting point is a weekday outside the busiest periods in the USDA’s national data. Researchers at the USDA Economic Research Service analyzed American Time Use Survey data from 2014–2017. Their 2019 analysis found that 13% of Americans age 15 and older shopped for groceries on an average weekday, compared with 16% on an average weekend. These are shares of people who shopped, not counts of customers inside stores.

These historical national patterns do not establish a current least-busy hour for every retailer. Store location, season, and local routines can change the picture. What is the best time to shop for fresh produce?
At a farmers market
Go early in the morning. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends an early visit to avoid produce that has been sitting out all day. It also advises choosing loose produce when that lets you select items yourself. Look for undamaged pieces, and avoid mold, major bruises, or cuts. At a supermarket
Time of day alone is not a reliable freshness test. The available guidance does not establish that supermarket produce is freshest at opening or identify a universal produce-restocking day. Inspect the specific items you plan to buy, and ask your local store about its delivery schedule if timing matters.

Being able to examine produce matters to shoppers: in the Food Industry Association’s 2026 U.S. Grocery Shopper Trends, 69% said they wanted to examine produce up close. How to choose a shopping window that works
There is no single best hour for every shopper. Weigh the likely crowd, your opportunity to select produce, what the store can confirm about deliveries, and whether you can get cold items home promptly. A practical plan:

- For pre-cut or packaged produce, choose items that are refrigerated or surrounded by ice. Refrigerate them at home. Keep perishable fresh fruits and vegetables in a clean refrigerator at 40°F or below.
- For food safety on the trip home, shop for nonperishables first, then refrigerated and frozen goods; leave deli and other cold selections until later. Take groceries home promptly. If other errands will keep you away for more than 30 minutes, use a cooler with chill packs. Refrigerate perishables within two hours, or within one hour when the outdoor temperature is above 90°F. What day do grocery stores restock produce?
There is no universal restocking day established by the available sources. Delivery schedules vary by store, so ask the location you shop at when produce arrives. Even with that information, inspect individual items: delivery timing alone does not tell you their condition.
