For most people, the OM SYSTEM Tough TG-7 is the strongest all-around rugged waterproof compact in the published comparisons cited here. It combines a 15 m waterproof rating, 4K video, RAW capture and dedicated macro modes. Choose the KODAK PIXPRO WPZ2 for a simpler, lower-cost option, or the RICOH WG-80 if built-in macro lighting is especially useful. This guide synthesizes published reviews and manufacturer specifications; no independent testing was performed for this article.

Which rugged waterproof camera should you buy?

Camera Best for Water and impact ratings Standout features
OM SYSTEM Tough TG-7 Best all-around 15 m waterproof; 2.1 m shock resistance 4K video, RAW capture, 25–100 mm equivalent lens, Microscope and Super Macro modes
KODAK PIXPRO WPZ2 Budget-minded use 15 m waterproof; 2 m shock resistance 4× optical zoom, Wi-Fi, 1080p video
RICOH WG-80 Close-up work with built-in lighting 14 m waterproof for up to two hours; 1.6 m shock resistance Six adjustable macro LEDs, 5× optical zoom

These are manufacturer-stated limits, not guarantees against damage in every situation. Follow the camera manual, including its instructions for seals and closures, and match the rating to your activity.

OM SYSTEM Tough TG-7: best all-around

The TG-7 is the most versatile pick of these three if you want a rugged camera that can also handle close-ups and higher-resolution video. OM SYSTEM specifies a 12 MP BSI CMOS sensor and a 25–100 mm-equivalent lens with a maximum aperture of f/2.0. It also lists sensor-shift stabilization, 4K and vertical video, RAW capture, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The camera is rated waterproof to 15 m, shock-resistant to 2.1 m, freeze-resistant to −10 °C and crush-resistant to 100 kg; the manufacturer also describes it as dustproof. See OM SYSTEM’s TG-7 specifications.

Why choose it

Its Microscope and Super Macro modes make it more capable for close subjects than a basic waterproof compact, while 4K video and RAW give enthusiasts more options for capture and editing. OM SYSTEM lists macro lights and converters among its accessory categories, though compatibility should be checked for any particular accessory.

What to consider

The 12 MP sensor is a meaningful limitation if image quality is your top priority. TechRadar notes that it cannot compete with many current smartphones, while Digital Camera World praises the camera’s versatility but says buyers pay more. TechRadar also says the TG-7 is not a compelling upgrade for existing TG-6 owners. See Digital Camera World’s waterproof-camera comparison and TechRadar’s waterproof-camera guide.

KODAK PIXPRO WPZ2: a simpler budget option

The WPZ2 is for buyers who want a camera for wet or rough settings without paying for the TG-7’s broader feature set. KODAK’s specification sheet lists a 16 MP CMOS sensor, 4× optical zoom, 1080p video, Wi-Fi, dust protection, waterproofing to 15 m and shock resistance to 2 m. The spec sheet is available from KODAK PIXPRO.

TechRadar’s hands-on review describes the WPZ2 as a budget camera with a basic feature set and modest image quality. The reviewer used it in local saltwater rock pools and found the build solid, but also observed droplets remaining on the front element after submersion. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a guarantee for every camera or condition. Read TechRadar’s WPZ2 review.

RICOH WG-80: built-in macro lighting

The WG-80’s differentiator is its close-up lighting: six adjustable LED macro lights with five brightness levels. RICOH says the lighting can add a three-dimensional effect or emphasize contrast in macro subjects. It also specifies a 16 MP back-illuminated CMOS sensor, 5× optical zoom starting at a 28 mm-equivalent focal length, waterproofing to 14 m for up to two hours, shock resistance to 1.6 m, freeze operation to −10 °C and crush resistance to 100 kgf. Consider it when built-in illumination is valuable for documenting small objects or nearby subjects. Its water-depth rating is slightly lower than those of the TG-7 and WPZ2, and the cited material does not establish that its macro lighting produces better image quality than the other cameras.

How to choose for your activity

For snorkeling and shallow-water trips

The TG-7 and WPZ2 both carry manufacturer-stated 15 m waterproof ratings. That makes either a plausible choice for buyers whose priority is a compact camera for water activities, but a depth rating is not a substitute for following the manual. The WG-80 is rated to 14 m for up to two hours. Choose based on the features you need as well as the rating: the TG-7 adds 4K and RAW, while the WPZ2 keeps things simpler.

For close-up photos

Start with the subject and working conditions. The TG-7 offers Microscope and Super Macro modes; the WG-80 has built-in adjustable macro LEDs that can illuminate a nearby subject. The cited specifications do not provide a controlled comparison of their close-up image quality, so these features are a practical basis for narrowing the choice, not proof that one camera takes better macro photos.

For rough handling

The stated shock-resistance ratings are 2.1 m for the TG-7, 2 m for the WPZ2 and 1.6 m for the WG-80. These are product specifications, not a promise that a camera will survive every drop; the actual outcome can depend on the circumstances and the manufacturer’s conditions.

  • Video: the TG-7 supports 4K, while the WPZ2 spec sheet lists 1080p. The cited WG-80 information does not establish a comparable video resolution.
  • Connectivity: the TG-7 has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth; the WPZ2 lists Wi-Fi. The cited WG-80 information does not establish comparable wireless connectivity.
  • Image quality: megapixel counts alone do not determine photo quality. TechRadar specifically flags the TG-7’s small 12 MP sensor as a limitation relative to many current smartphones, and describes the WPZ2’s image quality as modest.

What a waterproof rating does—and does not—tell you

A rating describes a stated operating limit, not universal protection. Check the specific model’s manual before use, particularly its instructions on closing the battery or card compartment and keeping seals clean and properly seated. Do not infer that a camera is safe beyond its stated depth or time limit, or that a rating makes it immune to damage in saltwater, impacts or other conditions.

For the WG-80, RICOH explicitly states a maximum depth of 14 m for up to two hours. The supplied specifications for the TG-7 and WPZ2 state a depth of 15 m but do not provide a comparable time limit here; consult each model’s current manual for operating details.
