For most teams already running browser tests in Playwright, Playwright Test is the best place to start: screenshot assertions fit into an existing test suite and include controls for comparing images. Choose Loki instead when Storybook stories are your main test inventory, or reg-suit when you already capture screenshots and need baseline storage, comparison and pull-request reporting. BackstopJS offers a dedicated page-and-scenario workflow, but its repository is seeking a new maintainer. Lost Pixel has broad story and page coverage, but its repository says the product is being sunset.

Visual regression testing is not just an image-diff setting. Reliable results depend on making the browser, fonts, viewport, data and rendering conditions repeatable—and on treating baseline changes as code that needs review.

What visual regression testing does

A visual regression test captures a rendered web page or component, then compares the image with an approved baseline. A mismatch can reveal an unintended layout, styling or rendering change. The comparison does not decide whether a difference is a bug: a reviewer still needs to inspect the images and approve intentional changes.

The tools below solve different parts of that workflow. Some navigate to pages or render component stories; others compare and store images produced elsewhere. They are not interchangeable, so choose according to what you already test and how your team reviews changes.

Best open-source visual regression tools for websites

Tool Best fit What it contributes Important qualification
Playwright Test Teams with an existing Playwright test suite Native screenshot assertions and image comparisons inside browser tests Snapshots are platform- and browser-sensitive; keep the rendering environment consistent.
BackstopJS A dedicated catalog of page scenarios and a visual review report Reference, test and diff inspection, a scrubber, Docker rendering, scripted interactions and CI-oriented output The repository says it needs a new maintainer/owner; assess maintenance risk before adopting it.
reg-suit An existing screenshot pipeline needing comparison and review infrastructure Image comparison, HTML reports, cloud snapshot storage plugins and GitHub pull-request integrations It does not replace the tool that captures your screenshots.
Loki A Storybook-centered component library Visual testing of Storybook stories, with Chrome-in-Docker recommended among its supported targets It is story-oriented; consider a page-oriented runner when routes and full application flows are the main unit.
Lost Pixel A feature match for mixed story and page coverage, subject to lifecycle review Storybook, Ladle, Histoire and application-page coverage, plus options such as breakpoints, thresholds, retries and masking The repository announces that the product is being sunset; do not treat it as a dependable default without a confirmed successor, fork or maintenance plan.

Which tool should you choose?

Use Playwright when browser tests are already in place

Playwright Test is the most direct choice if your suite already handles navigation, fixtures and CI. Its official documentation describes the built-in visual assertion as await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). On the first run, Playwright creates a reference image; later runs compare against it. The snapshots are stored by browser and platform because rendering can vary across operating systems and browsers.

Playwright uses pixelmatch and offers comparison controls such as maxDiffPixels. It also lets a test apply a stylesheet to hide volatile elements. These controls help manage noisy or expected differences; they do not replace a stable test environment or careful review.

Use BackstopJS for a dedicated page-and-scenario workflow

BackstopJS is designed around configured website scenarios and a report that lets reviewers inspect reference, test and diff images, including with a scrubber. Its documented options include Chrome Headless capture, Docker rendering to reduce cross-platform variation, interactions scripted through Playwright or Puppeteer, JUnit output, and CI/source-control integration. That makes it a candidate when you want visual scenarios to be a dedicated workflow rather than assertions embedded in an existing test suite.

Its repository is MIT licensed, but also says, “BackstopJS needs a new maintainer/owner.” That maintenance notice is a material adoption concern: evaluate the project’s current release and support situation for your own needs instead of assuming that its feature set guarantees ongoing maintenance.

Use reg-suit when capture exists and review is the missing piece

reg-suit is a command-line comparison and reporting layer. It compares current images with previous ones, generates HTML reports, and can store snapshots in S3 or Google Cloud Storage through plugins. Its Git-hash key generator can identify a parent commit, and GitHub integrations can report results on pull requests. It can run locally or in a CI service.

That division of labor matters: use it when another tool—such as Playwright, Puppeteer, Storybook tooling or a custom renderer—already produces the images. Evaluate how its baseline keying and storage plugins fit your branching and CI setup before wiring it into reviews.

Use Loki when Storybook stories are the test inventory

Loki is specialized for visual regression testing of Storybook projects. Its stated targets include Chrome in Docker (recommended), local Chrome, iOS simulators and Android emulators. It fits component libraries where stories define the states worth checking. If your critical coverage is instead a set of routes, logged-in journeys or application flows, a page-oriented approach may map more naturally to the work.

Treat Lost Pixel’s feature fit separately from its lifecycle

Lost Pixel documents support for Storybook and Ladle stories and application pages, with Histoire, custom screenshots, multiple browsers, responsive breakpoints, thresholds, retries and masking also listed. That is a broad fit for mixed coverage. However, the repository says, “We are sunsetting the product and building what’s next,” and announces that Lost Pixel is joining Figma. Until a successor, fork or maintenance plan is confirmed, treat it as a feature-fit lead to investigate, not a safe default for a new long-lived pipeline.

How to add screenshot assertions to a Playwright test

This example assumes a Playwright Test project is already installed and configured. Add a test file, set the target page, and use a named screenshot assertion:

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('home page matches its visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('https://example.com');
  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('home.png', {
    fullPage: true,
    animations: 'disabled',
    maxDiffPixels: 100,
  });
});

Replace https://example.com with a stable page in your application. On the initial run, Playwright creates the reference screenshot; inspect and commit it as the expected state. Later test runs compare against that reference. The maxDiffPixels value here is an example setting, not a universal threshold: choose a tolerance appropriate to your test and review what it permits. Use fullPage only when the entire page is the intended comparison target.

For a page with timestamps, rotating content or other expected variation, prefer making the fixture deterministic or hiding the specific volatile element rather than broadly increasing the allowed difference. Playwright also supports applying a stylesheet to hide volatile elements. Keep snapshot updates deliberate: regenerate and review them when a visual change is intended, rather than treating every failed comparison as an automatic baseline update.

Make visual tests reproducible

Playwright warns that host operating system, browser version, hardware and headless mode can affect rendering. Loki’s recommendation to use Chrome in Docker reflects the same practical concern: standardize the environment that creates and checks baselines. A comparison becomes useful only when ordinary environment drift does not swamp actual product changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Pin the browser and execution image. Run baseline creation and comparison in the same pinned browser/container setup; avoid mixing developer laptops and CI as if they render identically.
  • Install the same fonts. Font availability and rendering can shift line breaks, widths and vertical spacing even when application code is unchanged.
  • Fix viewport and device scale factor. Keep the chosen viewport dimensions and pixel density consistent between baseline and test runs.
  • Control page data. Seed or mock dynamic content such as dates, rotating items and user-specific values so an unrelated data change does not create image noise.
  • Disable animation and transient UI where appropriate. Turn off animations or wait for a stable state; hide only known volatile elements so real regressions remain visible.
  • Review baseline updates like code changes. Check the diff and confirm that the intended visual change is the one being approved.

Set up CI, baselines and review deliberately

Decide where reference images live and what revision they represent before a suite grows. With Playwright, snapshots are associated with browser and platform, so a baseline generated in a different environment can create misleading diffs. With reg-suit, decide how Git-hash keys relate to the parent commit and where the storage plugin keeps snapshots. With BackstopJS, verify that its report and CI output fit the way reviewers need to inspect changes.

Include the visual report or image diffs in the review path, not just a pass/fail status. A threshold can reduce noise, but reviewers still need enough context to determine whether a changed region is intended. For story-driven coverage, treat the story catalog as the inventory; for page-driven coverage, explicitly select representative routes and states rather than assuming a handful of homepage captures covers an application.

Common problems and fixes

Many unrelated pixels differ between runs

Check whether the baseline and current run use the same OS/container, browser version, headless mode, fonts, viewport and device scale factor. Then inspect dynamic page data and animation. Stabilize those inputs before changing a threshold; a tolerance can conceal genuine changes.

A test fails on dates, counters or rotating content

Make the test data deterministic when possible. Otherwise, hide or mask the specific volatile region using a supported mechanism in your chosen tool. Avoid disabling comparison for a broad part of the page when that region contains meaningful UI.

New baselines differ from a developer’s local screenshots

Generate and review baselines in the same pinned environment used by CI, including browser and fonts. Playwright explicitly documents host-rendering variability, so a local screenshot should not be assumed to be interchangeable with a CI reference.

The diff is too sensitive—or misses a real change

Inspect the actual diff before adjusting thresholds. Playwright’s maxDiffPixels sets a pixel allowance, but the right value depends on the test. A broad allowance can let unintended changes pass; a narrow one can flag harmless noise if rendering is not stable. Combine a considered threshold with deterministic inputs and human review.

You have screenshots but no useful pull-request review

Keep the capture tool and review layer separate in your evaluation. reg-suit is relevant when images already come from another renderer and the missing pieces are baseline selection, storage, comparison and reporting. Check that the storage and GitHub integration match your repository and CI permissions.

A tool fits technically, but its maintenance status is uncertain

Distinguish capability from lifecycle. BackstopJS’s repository requests a new maintainer; Lost Pixel’s repository announces sunsetting. Before making either central to a long-term pipeline, verify the maintenance path that will matter to your team and consider how you would preserve or migrate baselines.

Costs and trade-offs of open source

Open-source software removes a license fee for the tool; it does not make the workflow cost-free. Your team still owns browser and container upkeep, fixture data, CI runtime, baseline storage where applicable, and review of image changes. A standalone runner can make scenarios and reports easier to organize, while native Playwright assertions avoid adding a separate visual runner to an existing Playwright suite. A comparison layer such as reg-suit can fill infrastructure gaps without replacing capture. Weigh those operational responsibilities alongside features and maintenance health.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need to capture a page as an input to your own review or pipeline, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a substitute for the baseline comparison and regression-review workflow described above. A GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Its clean-shot options accept cookie and consent banners like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

One-call cURL example (replace the target URL as needed): ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Frequently Asked Questions

Can reg-suit take the screenshots it compares?

No. It is the comparison, baseline and reporting layer; provide it with images from a separate capture tool.

Does a passing visual test prove that a page is correct?

No. It means the captured image stayed within the configured comparison tolerance. It does not establish that the baseline itself is correct or that untested states look right.
