There is no single best open-source screenshot app for every developer. ShareX is a strong Windows fit when you want capture, annotation, OCR, recording, automation, and uploads in one tool. Flameshot suits Windows, macOS, and Linux users who want to annotate a selected capture and script actions from the command line. ksnip is another cross-platform capture-and-annotation option, with OCR available through a separate plugin. On Linux, check your desktop session—especially Wayland—before choosing.
Which open-source screenshot app fits your workflow?
Choose by operating system and the work you need to do after taking a screenshot. The project documentation supports these as feature-based starting points, not as tested rankings for speed, ease of use, or reliability.

Capture, edit, and automate
ShareX lists full-screen, region, active-window, monitor, and scrolling capture. Its editing tools include arrows, numbered steps, blur, pixelation, highlighting, cropping, and redaction-oriented tools. It also lists OCR, custom uploaders, workflow automation, and actions that run after capture or upload. Recording is useful when a static image cannot show a sequence of UI behavior.
For a developer workflow, that breadth can reduce handoffs: capture a bug, mark the relevant control, obscure sensitive values, then route the result through a configured workflow. The best configuration depends on how you store and share images; an upload feature does not mean every capture should be uploaded.
Platform and privacy limits
The official material reviewed identifies ShareX as a Windows tool; it does not establish official macOS or Linux releases. If you need a native option on those systems, consider Flameshot or ksnip instead. Before using custom uploaders or automated sharing, inspect where files go, which actions run automatically, and whether the captured screen contains credentials, customer data, or internal URLs.
Flameshot: annotation-first capture across platforms
Flameshot is a good fit if you want to select an area, annotate it in the capture workflow, and optionally drive actions from scripts or key bindings. The project describes it as free, open-source, and cross-platform; its downloads page lists Windows, macOS, and Linux builds.

Annotation and command-line use
Built-in editing includes arrows, highlights, blur or pixelation, text, freehand drawing, shapes, counters, and solid color boxes. These cover common bug-report tasks such as pointing to a control, labeling a step, or obscuring a value. Flameshot also documents a command-line interface for scripting and key bindings, which can help integrate capture into a repeatable developer setup.

The project documentation identifies its main code as GPLv3. On Linux, package availability and behavior may vary: the installation documentation notes that most listed packages are maintained by distributions, with a project-maintained AUR package as an exception. Use the package and version appropriate for your distribution rather than assuming every package is maintained by the Flameshot project.
Wayland and Linux session caveat
Flameshot calls GNOME Wayland and Plasma Wayland support experimental. If you rely on capture hotkeys or predictable selection behavior, confirm that the app works in your exact desktop environment and session before making it part of a team workflow. A Linux installation alone does not establish that the capture path will behave identically under X11 and Wayland.
ksnip: cross-platform annotation with optional OCR
ksnip is a cross-platform screenshot and annotation tool. Its repository lists Linux packages including RPM, DEB, APT, Snap, Flatpak, and AppImage, as well as a zipped Windows executable and a macOS app distributed in a DMG. It identifies the project as GPL-3.0 licensed.

OCR is not simply a built-in switch in the base application: ksnip provides it through a separately installed plugin that uses Tesseract. If extracting text is part of your workflow, check the plugin installation and Tesseract requirements for the release you install. Without that additional setup, treat ksnip as a capture-and-annotation choice rather than assuming OCR is available out of the box.
Wayland limitations and maturity
The repository’s known-issues section documents several Wayland constraints. These include unavailable global hotkeys where compositor support is missing, GNOME Wayland screenshot and clipboard limitations, KDE Plasma screenshot issues, and HiDPI positioning problems. These are sensitive to application version and environment, so review the current project’s issue list and try the actual operations you need—capture, copy to clipboard, hotkey invocation, and positioning—on your own setup.

The README also asks for help from developers and testers across Linux, Windows, and macOS. That is a reason to verify the behavior you depend on, not a basis for assuming equal maturity on every operating system.
How to choose for Linux, Wayland, OCR, and sharing
Start with the session, not just the distribution
On Linux, identify whether you use X11 or Wayland and which desktop environment or compositor is active. Then check the application’s current compatibility notes. For Flameshot, GNOME and Plasma Wayland support is explicitly experimental. For ksnip, review the documented compositor-specific issues and test your target workflow.

- Need recording, OCR, automation, or custom uploaders on Windows: ShareX is the clearest documented fit among these options.
- Need quick in-place annotation and scripting across desktop platforms: start with Flameshot, while checking Linux session support.
- Need cross-platform capture and annotation, with optional text recognition: consider ksnip and account for its separate OCR plugin.
- Need local handling for confidential material: keep the capture path local and inspect any upload configuration before enabling it.
Decide whether upload belongs in the workflow
ShareX offers custom upload workflows, and Flameshot documents Imgur upload among its overview features. Upload convenience is not the same as a privacy recommendation. If screenshots may contain secrets or personal information, prefer local storage unless your destination, retention, access controls, and sharing policy are appropriate for that material.

- Confirm platform support. ShareX is documented for Windows; Flameshot and ksnip list builds for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
- Test the capture modes you actually use. Try full screen, region, window, or scrolling capture as relevant, rather than relying on a feature list alone.
- Check annotation and redaction behavior. Verify that blur, pixelation, or other redaction tools meet your needs before sharing sensitive content.
- On Linux, test the current session. Exercise hotkeys, screenshots, clipboard copying, and HiDPI positioning under your compositor and application version.
- Review network behavior. Determine whether upload destinations, automated actions, or integrations send files outside your machine.
- Validate OCR and scripting dependencies. For ksnip, install its Tesseract-based OCR plugin separately; for script-driven use, consult the selected app’s command-line documentation.
Common problems and what to check
A hotkey does not take a screenshot on Wayland
Global hotkey support depends on the compositor and application integration. ksnip documents that hotkeys may be unavailable where compositor support is missing, and Flameshot labels GNOME and Plasma Wayland support experimental. Try the app’s documented alternate launch method, inspect current compatibility notes, and test on the target session before relying on the shortcut.
The screenshot or clipboard is missing or positioned incorrectly
For ksnip on Wayland, consult the known-issues notes for GNOME screenshot and clipboard behavior, KDE Plasma capture issues, and HiDPI positioning. Check the application version and compositor, then reproduce the exact capture and copy operation. Do not assume an issue seen in one session applies to every Linux desktop.
OCR is unavailable in ksnip
Install and configure the separate Tesseract-based OCR plugin. Verify that the plugin matches your ksnip installation and that its external dependency is available; the base app alone does not guarantee OCR.

Flameshot notes that most Linux packages are maintained by distributions, so package versions and integration can differ. Confirm which package source and version you installed, and compare against current project installation guidance before reporting a general application failure.
A capture is shared somewhere unintended
Review the active uploader, custom uploader configuration, and after-capture or after-upload actions. ShareX’s sharing and automation capabilities make this configuration check important; disable routes you do not intend to use and avoid uploading sensitive images to an unapproved destination.

For Windows developers who want capture, editing, OCR, recording, automation, and upload options together, start with ShareX. For cross-platform annotation and scripting, try Flameshot, with particular caution on Wayland. For cross-platform capture and annotation with plugin-based OCR, evaluate ksnip against your operating system and session. The official project materials do not establish a universal usability or reliability winner, so the right choice is the one whose platform support and workflow match the environment you actually use.

ShareX lists OCR. ksnip’s OCR requires a separate Tesseract-based plugin; Flameshot’s cited feature overview does not list OCR.
Does a screenshot tool have to upload my captures?
No. Upload support is an optional workflow capability; check the app’s destinations and automation settings and keep sensitive captures local when appropriate.
