There is no single mobile-network winner for every Canadian. In Opensignal’s February 2026 report, Bell led measured 5G download speed, Rogers led the report’s revised 5G Availability measure, and Rogers and Telus shared the reliability and consistency lead in the report overview. For Coverage Experience, the latest supplied comparison is Opensignal’s August 2025 report, where Bell and Telus tied. These are category results from different measures and dates—not a universal ranking for every address or trip.

Canada’s mobile networks, ranked by what they do best

The order below is a practical, category-based ranking, not a single composite score. It gives priority to the latest surfaced national performance findings, then uses the most recent supplied Coverage Experience results. Opensignal’s February 2026 report measured October 1 through December 29, 2025; its August 2025 coverage report measured April 1 through June 29, 2025. Because the reports measure different things on different dates, the list is best read as a guide to strengths, not a prediction of service at a particular home or route.

  1. Bell — best for measured 5G download speed. Bell recorded 194.8 Mbps for 5G download speed in Opensignal’s February 2026 Canada report, based on measurements from October 1 to December 29, 2025. That result identifies the speed leader in that report; it does not establish Bell as fastest in every place or at every time. Opensignal’s February 2026 Canada report.
  2. Rogers — best for the report’s 5G Availability measure. Rogers scored 85.9% in Opensignal’s February 2026 report. Under the report’s revised definition, this is the share of time users with a 5G device and subscription had access to a detected 5G signal. It measures time connected to 5G, not the geographic area where 5G can be received. Because the metric was revised, do not compare this percentage directly with older reports’ differently defined figures. Opensignal’s February 2026 Canada report.
  3. Rogers and Telus — shared leaders for reliability and consistency in the February 2026 report overview. The supplied report summary identifies them as sharing the lead, but does not provide scores for these categories. The result therefore supports a shared category lead, not a numerical comparison between the two. Opensignal’s February 2026 Canada report.
  4. Bell and Telus — tied for Coverage Experience in the latest supplied coverage comparison. In Opensignal’s August 2025 Canada report, both scored 9.5/10 for Coverage Experience and 6.3/10 for 5G Coverage Experience. The report measured April 1 to June 29, 2025. Coverage Experience reflects users’ experience in places they live, work, and travel; it is distinct from a time-based availability measure and from a population-coverage percentage. Opensignal’s August 2025 Canada report.

These findings do not create a defensible all-purpose first-through-fourth carrier ranking: the categories have no shared weighting method, and the evidence supplied does not establish city-level winners, local results, or current plan value.

What the national coverage figures do—and do not—tell you

The CRTC’s 2026 report says 5G networks were available to 94% of Canada’s population. That is a population measure, not the share of Canada’s land area with 5G. The CRTC also says rural and First Nations reserve coverage lagged the national average and reported no 5G coverage in the Territories. These figures describe national conditions; they do not identify which carrier is best in a particular community. CRTC Communications Market Reports 2026.

For roads, the same CRTC report says more than 100,000 kilometres, or 87%, of major roads and highways had mobile network coverage. That aggregate does not guarantee reception on a specific road segment or throughout a particular journey. The CRTC also found that Canada’s average mobile download speeds showed no real growth since 2023 and noted that speeds fluctuate seasonally. These national observations are context, not carrier-by-carrier results. CRTC Communications Market Reports 2026.

How to choose the best network for your own use

  1. Check the places and routes that matter. Look up coverage for your home, work, regular travel, and any rural destinations you visit. A national result or broad map can’t guarantee reception at a specific address, indoors, or between towns.
  2. Decide which kind of performance matters most. If downloads are your priority, Bell’s result is the relevant February 2026 benchmark. If time with a detected 5G signal is more important, use Rogers’ revised 5G Availability result. For coverage experience, the latest supplied comparison is the August 2025 Bell–Telus tie. Reliability and consistency are separate considerations; Rogers and Telus shared the lead in the February report overview.
  3. Compare plans only after confirming local fit. The results here do not establish current plan prices, data allowances, or terms. Check the available plans and conditions for your address and intended use before deciding.

Why coverage maps and rankings can disagree with experience

Coverage, availability, and speed answer different questions. Opensignal’s Coverage Experience is based on user experience across places people live, work, and travel. Availability asks how much of the time users have a connection—or, in the February 2026 revised 5G measure, a detected 5G signal. Neither time-based measure says how much land is covered. Opensignal notes that population-coverage and land-area estimates may not reflect users’ experienced coverage. Opensignal’s August 2025 Canada report.

The CRTC says providers’ current coverage reports use different methodologies and can disagree with actual experience. In Telecom Decision 2026-258, the CRTC adopted a standard with three outdoor signal thresholds: Level 1 for uninterrupted emergency voice calls and public alerts; Level 2 adds high-quality voice and video calling and speeds of 3 Mbps down and 1 Mbps up; Level 3 adds 10 Mbps down and 2 Mbps up. Providers must report Level 1 in the next Annual Facilities Survey in early 2027, with Levels 2 and 3 in later surveys. The new standard is intended to make reports more consistent; it does not mean existing maps already use these common thresholds. CRTC Telecom Decision 2026-258.

How to interpret Rogers’ separate 5G+ claim

On June 4, 2026, Rogers announced that umlaut ranked it Canada’s best and most reliable 5G+ network, citing umlaut’s Mobile Certificate and Audit Report. This is a company announcement about a named benchmark, not a universal finding that supersedes Opensignal’s category-specific results. The announcement also quoted Rogers CTO Mark Kennedy: “We are focused on delivering the best network experience to our customers along with the most coverage with Rogers Satellite.” That statement is the executive’s view in a corporate announcement, not independent evidence of comparative performance. Rogers announcement dated June 4, 2026.
