If Free Play Days has ended, its temporary access to a paid game is over; to keep playing that exact game, you generally need to buy it. If you’re looking for something else to play without buying a game, Xbox’s free-to-play catalogue offers options including Fortnite, Rocket League, Call of Duty: Warzone, Warframe, War Thunder, and The First Descendant. Which fits depends on whether you want a shooter, arcade-style competition, co-op action, or vehicle combat.
Free Play Days and free-to-play games are different
Free Play Days is a limited-time promotion for selected games. Those games do not become permanently free when the event ends. By contrast, Xbox’s free-to-play catalogue lists games available to download and play without buying the base game, though individual titles and features may have their own conditions.
For example, Xbox Wire’s October 1, 2026 announcement offered Far Cry 6, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Skull and Bones, and The Crew Motorfest through Sunday, October 4. That event has ended; those titles should not be treated as currently free on the basis of that promotion. Event terms can differ, so check the current announcement for any future Free Play Days event.
Which free-to-play Xbox game should you try?
These are preference-based matches drawn from Xbox’s catalogue descriptions, not a quality ranking or hands-on review. Catalogue listings and regional availability can change, so check the Xbox Store in your region before downloading.

| What you want | Game | Why it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Competitive, arcade-style play | Rocket League | Listed in Xbox’s free-to-play catalogue. The listing does not establish current modes, player counts, or performance. |
| Battle royale or shooter play | Fortnite or Call of Duty: Warzone | Both appear in Xbox’s free-to-play listings. Choose based on which game’s style and features appeal to you; the catalogue does not establish which is more active or better. |
| Co-op action with a continuing story | Warframe | Xbox describes it as a narrative-rich co-op shooter in which players command different Warframes while defending the Origin System. |
| Co-op action with solo play available | The First Descendant | Xbox describes it as a third-person co-op action RPG shooter with solo play and co-op for up to eight players. |
| Military vehicles rather than a conventional arena shooter | War Thunder | Xbox describes this free-to-play MMO as focused on aircraft, armored vehicles, and naval craft from World War II and the Cold War. |
Other titles surfaced in Xbox’s catalogue include Roblox, eFootball, Asphalt Legends, Rainbow Six Siege Free Access, and Zenless Zone Zero. Their presence on the US catalogue page is not a guarantee of availability in every region or of a continuing listing.
Can you keep playing the game from the promotion?
If you want to continue the same game rather than switch to another title, buying it is the route described in Xbox Wire’s Free Play Days announcement. Xbox says players can keep their Gamerscore and achievements earned during the event after purchasing the game. Discounts and availability can vary by title and region, so check the game’s current Store page for its price and edition options.

In the October 1–4, 2026 event, Xbox said its five Ubisoft games were available to all Xbox members without a Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, or Essential membership. That was a condition of that particular event, not a promise about future promotions. Xbox also said players could install from a game’s detail page or find the Free Play Days collection on console.
Does free-to-play online multiplayer require a membership?
In April 2021, Xbox announced that online multiplayer in supported free-to-play games would be available at no charge without Xbox Live Gold. The announcement reported that more than 50 games supported online multiplayer without Gold at that time. That number is historical, not a current catalogue count. Xbox also noted that some games were free but did not support online multiplayer. Check the current game listing and Xbox membership terms for the title and features you plan to use; the 2021 announcement does not guarantee that every game or feature has the same conditions today.

How to choose after a promotion ends
- Decide whether you want the same game. If so, check its Xbox Store page to see whether it is available to buy and what editions or regional prices are offered. The Free Play Days event page may explain what happens to event-earned Gamerscore and achievements.
- If you want a different game, choose by play style. Use the catalogue matches above to narrow the choice to arcade competition, shooters, co-op action, or military vehicles.
- Confirm regional availability and current terms. Check the title’s Store listing and the current Xbox membership terms, especially if online multiplayer or a particular feature matters to you.
Xbox’s catalogue supplies descriptions and listings, not a current comparative player-count table or a stated ranking method. It does not establish which game is objectively the most popular or best, so treat “best” as a matter of the play style you want.
