For free, legal British comedy in the UK, start with BBC iPlayer, ITVX’s free tier, Channel 4 streaming and Channel 5 streaming. Their catalogues change, so search for the exact series and episode before settling in. Check whether a programme is on demand or live, whether it sits behind a paid tier, and whether your viewing needs a TV Licence.
Best places to stream British comedy free
No single service is established as having the largest or most complete British comedy catalogue. These broadcaster-backed services are the most useful places to check first; availability can vary by title, season and date.

BBC iPlayer
Check iPlayer for BBC comedy programmes and box sets. Its available titles change, so search for the specific show in the app rather than assuming a series is currently listed. A TV Licence is required to use BBC iPlayer, including for on-demand programmes. GOV.UK’s TV Licence guidance explains the rule.

ITV describes ITVX as offering a free, advert-supported tier that includes comedy. That is separate from ITVX Premium: ITV says its BritBox UK catalogue is available through Premium, so BritBox should not be treated as part of ITVX’s free offering. Check the programme page to confirm which tier includes the title. ITV’s ITVX overview describes the free service, and its BritBox help page explains the Premium distinction.
#1 Best Overall
Channel 4 streaming and U
Channel 4 announced on 6 January 2026 that UKTV’s U service was available within Channel 4 streaming. Its announcement named The Office, Red Dwarf, QI XL, Would I Lie to You?, Birds of a Feather and Not Going Out among the shows. These are examples in that dated announcement, not a guarantee that every episode is still available; search the current service for the title and season. Read Channel 4’s announcement.
Channel 5 streaming
Channel 5 has an on-demand streaming service listed in Freeview’s directory of players. Ofcom notes that the service called My5 in its 2024 tracker was rebranded as Channel 5’s streaming service in March 2025. The official sources cited here do not establish a current comedy catalogue, so check the app directly rather than relying on older My5 recommendations. Ofcom’s 2025 report records the tracker and rebrand context.
Use Freeview or Freely to find broadcaster services
Freeview
Freeview can help you find broadcaster players and promotes comedy box sets through Freeview Play. It is a discovery and access route, not a promise that every programme is available on every device. Freeview says coverage, compatible devices and player availability vary. Check its Freeview Play information.

Freely
Freely is a broadband-based platform for participating broadcasters’ live and on-demand television, accessible on compatible equipment. ITV’s launch announcement on 30 April 2024 described participation from BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5, with STV and S4C also expected to bring content, and named TV hardware partners. Treat Freely as an optional way to access participating services, not as a separate guarantee of comedy rights or a requirement to buy a particular television. Read ITV’s Freely launch announcement.
Check these details before you watch
- Exact title and episodes: Search for the series and the particular season or episode. A listing for one season does not establish that the complete series is available.
- Free or paid tier: Confirm that the programme is included without a subscription; ITVX, for example, has both a free tier and Premium.
- On demand or live: Live streaming can trigger different TV Licence requirements from on-demand viewing.
- Ads, login and device: Check whether adverts, an account or a compatible device are needed for the way you plan to watch.
- TV Licence: GOV.UK says a licence is needed to watch live TV on any service and to use BBC iPlayer. It says on-demand viewing through services such as All 4 does not require one. The rule depends on what you watch and how, not simply on whether a service is free. See GOV.UK’s guidance.
What service ratings do—and do not—tell you
Ofcom’s 2025 report, drawing on its 2024 Public Service Media Tracker, reports satisfaction among viewers of broadcaster services: 79% for BBC iPlayer viewers, 72% for Channel 4 or Channel 4+ streaming viewers, 67% for ITVX or ITVX Premium viewers and 66% for My5 viewers. These are broad service satisfaction figures, not evaluations of comedy catalogues, and the My5 figure predates the March 2025 rebrand to Channel 5’s streaming service.
The same report says 60% of broadcaster video-on-demand viewers cited catching up on missed programmes as a reason for using the services, 50% cited watching when they wanted, and 41% cited specific programmes or box sets. Those survey findings help explain why broadcaster players are useful, but do not identify which has the best comedy selection. Ofcom’s report provides the survey context.

Should you use free ad-supported TV channels?
Services such as Pluto TV are part of the UK free ad-supported streaming television market, but a past themed channel is not proof of today’s schedule. Ofcom’s 2023 report described an ITVX Classic Comedy channel at launch and recorded services including Pluto TV, Freevee and Samsung TV Plus in its market snapshot. That does not establish that the comedy channel still operates or that any particular British sitcom is currently available. Check a service’s live guide and on-demand catalogue before relying on it. Ofcom’s 2023 report is historical context, not a current availability list.
