“Free flight simulator” can mean three different things: completely free software, a free-to-start game with paid expansions, or a time-limited demo of a commercial simulator. Those categories are not interchangeable.
FlightGear is the strongest all-round choice if you want a genuinely free, open-source civilian simulator. YSFlight is the better fit for an old or low-powered PC. DCS World is the standout free-to-start option for combat aviation, while the X-Plane 12 demo is best treated as a hardware and compatibility test—not as a complete free simulator.

1. FlightGear: best genuinely free civilian simulator
FlightGear is the clearest recommendation for someone searching for a free flight simulator rather than a free trial. It is open source under the GNU General Public License, and the project says both the simulator and its add-ons are free to download.

Its appeal is breadth. You can fly civilian aircraft in many parts of the world, use the built-in environment, connect to FlightGear multiplayer servers, and use VATSIM connectivity. Global scenery is fetched and updated as needed where you fly, rather than requiring you to manually install every region before starting.
What to expect from FlightGear
FlightGear is not a simple arcade game. It can expose you to navigation, aircraft handling, weather, procedures, and cockpit workload. That also means the first session is better used for verification than customization.
- Install the current release from flightgear.org/download.
- Start with one of the bundled aircraft and the default environment.
- Confirm that the aircraft loads, the scenery appears, sound works, and the controls respond correctly.
- Only then add third-party aircraft, scenery, or other modifications.
The project’s documented practical graphics requirement is an OpenGL driver supporting OpenGL 4.0 or higher. That is a more useful first check than assuming that a modern-looking Windows PC will automatically run it well.

If the interface text is too small on a high-DPI or large display, use Debug > Cycle GUI Style to cycle through the available graphical interface styles.
Version 2024.1.6 also addresses several specific problems, including OpenGL detection under Wayland, a Qt 6.11 launcher issue, an empty-device-list problem in the input-device dialog, a crash caused by selecting an empty Nasal directory, and the airports dialog’s runway-length display, which now uses meters.
Do not assume a broken third-party aircraft means the main installation is damaged. An aircraft made for another major FlightGear release may load with missing instruments, broken animations, or systems that no longer work. Test the bundled aircraft first; if that works, the add-on is the more likely cause.

2. YSFlight: best for an old or weak PC
YSFlight is a full freeware simulator with a much lower hardware burden than the more detailed options in this list. Its simple graphics, small storage footprint, fast startup, and relatively limited cockpit workload make it practical on older computers.

That simplicity is also the trade-off. YSFlight has dated visuals and limited systems simulation, so it is not the right choice for detailed airliner operations, realistic avionics practice, or a visually rich civilian world. Choose it when the priority is getting airborne quickly on hardware that struggles with modern 3D software.
Because current hardware requirements and a current version number were not verifiable from the available source material, check the project’s own download information before installing it on an unusual operating system or architecture.
3. DCS World: best free-to-start combat simulator
DCS World belongs on this list with an important qualification: it is not completely free. The base platform and starter content are free, but many additional aircraft, maps, and campaigns are sold separately.
The free installation is still useful. It lets you evaluate flight modeling, missions, weapons, and controller support before spending money. However, free aircraft do not necessarily provide the same cockpit and systems depth as paid full-fidelity modules.
DCS World makes sense if you want military aviation, tactical missions, weapons employment, and combat scenarios. It is a poor match for unrestricted civilian route flying, broad general aviation, or civilian instrument practice. It also has substantially higher hardware and storage demands than lightweight freeware such as YSFlight.

The common statement that “DCS World is completely free” is inaccurate. A more precise description is free-to-start combat simulator with paid expansions. There is no reason to buy a module until the free content runs acceptably on your PC and you know which aircraft or map you actually want.
4. X-Plane 12 demo: useful trial, not free simulator
Laminar Research currently offers a Free Demo of X-Plane 12. The installer can also update an existing installation or install a purchased X-Plane product, and the download page provides separate buttons for Windows, Mac, and Linux.
It is best used as a compatibility and performance test for the paid simulator. It should not be described as a complete free version of X-Plane 12.
The listed minimum requirements are:
- 25 GB of available disk space
- Intel Core i3/i5/i7/i9 with four or more cores, or AMD Ryzen 3/5/7/9
- 8 GB of RAM
- NVIDIA or AMD graphics supporting Vulkan 1.3, with at least 2 GB of VRAM
- Intel GPUs are not supported
If you own X-Plane through Steam, update it through Steam rather than mixing the Steam installation with the standalone installer.
What about Microsoft Flight Simulator?
Microsoft Flight Simulator should not be presented as a genuinely free simulator. Subscription access, a cloud service, or a temporary promotion does not turn a commercial product into freeware. The older Microsoft Flight Simulator X demo is likewise a restricted demo, not a complete free edition.
How to choose
- Want a complete free civilian simulator? Start with FlightGear.
- Have an old PC? Try YSFlight first.
- Want combat aviation? Install DCS World and evaluate the free content before considering paid modules.
- Want to test a paid civilian simulator? Use the X-Plane 12 demo, but treat it as a trial.
- Need broad civilian instrument or route practice? FlightGear is a better starting point than DCS World.
Common problems and practical fixes
Low frame rates
Before uninstalling, reduce the settings that create the largest workload: shadows, reflections, anti-aliasing, cloud detail, traffic, and visibility distance. A simulator can feel unusable at a high preset but become perfectly serviceable after a few targeted changes.

On a laptop, also check which GPU is being used. The simulator may have launched on integrated graphics even though the machine contains a discrete GPU. Select the simulator’s executable in the operating system or graphics-driver performance settings and assign the high-performance GPU.
Aircraft moves by itself or controls twitch
Duplicate axis assignments are a common cause. Check the aileron, elevator, rudder, and throttle mappings and make sure each physical axis is assigned only where intended. This can happen when a joystick, gamepad, and manufacturer software all expose overlapping controls.
Calibrate the device in the operating system first. Add a simulator dead zone only if the physical control still produces genuine noise around its center; excessive dead zone makes precise flying harder.
Missing gauges or a blank aircraft panel
Test a bundled aircraft. If it works, the problem is probably an outdated or incompatible add-on aircraft rather than a failed simulator installation. Remove or replace the add-on and check that it supports your installed major release.
No Internet connection
FlightGear can support ordinary solo flying without a permanent connection after the required program and scenery files are stored locally. Live weather, multiplayer, and scenery that has not yet been downloaded require connectivity.

Can these simulators replace real flight training?
No. FlightGear and DCS World can help with procedure practice and familiarization, but neither is automatically an approved training device, and neither replaces instruction in a real aircraft. Aircraft-specific switch logic, performance, and avionics behavior should be checked against the aircraft’s documentation before treating a simulation result as authoritative.

A joystick is not mandatory: keyboard and mouse controls can get an aircraft airborne. An analog joystick or gamepad makes smooth rotation, trimming, formation flying, and landing substantially easier, however.
