For a new web-testing project that needs Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, Playwright is a strong first evaluation; Selenium is worth considering when existing code, language needs, or compatibility requirements favor its ecosystem. Cypress and Puppeteer may fit teams already aligned with their workflows. If you need managed browser environments, evaluate BrowserStack Automate or Browserbase separately from the framework you use to write tests.
The useful decision is two-part: choose the framework that fits your tests and team, then decide whether to run browsers yourself or use a hosted execution service. This guide compares those choices and shows how to narrow them down without relying on a universal ranking.
What counts as a browser automation tool?
Browser automation tools let code control a browser to test an application, perform repeatable web tasks, or support an agent workflow. The phrase covers two different categories:
- Frameworks and libraries provide APIs for writing browser interactions and tests. Playwright, Selenium, Cypress, and Puppeteer belong in this part of the decision.
- Hosted execution services provide managed browser sessions or browser-and-OS environments in which scripts or tests can run. BrowserStack Automate and Browserbase are examples.
A hosted service does not necessarily replace a framework. BrowserStack describes support for several frameworks, while Browserbase documents a cloud browser endpoint compatible with Playwright, Puppeteer, and Selenium. A team can therefore select a framework first and separately decide where its automation should execute.

How to choose: start with your constraints
Write down the browser coverage, programming language, test architecture, debugging needs, and infrastructure requirements before comparing feature lists. Those constraints often eliminate unsuitable options faster than a generic “best tool” ranking.
| Requirement | What to check | Evidence-led direction |
|---|---|---|
| Browser coverage | Chromium or Chrome, Firefox, WebKit or Safari expectations, branded browsers, and any need for hosted real-browser environments | Playwright documents Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit support. Its WebKit build is not branded Safari; confirm whether that meets your actual requirement. Hosted services may provide browser and OS environments. |
| Language and existing code | Whether the team can use the available bindings and integrate with its existing tests | Playwright lists TypeScript, Python, .NET, and Java APIs. For exact current bindings and integrations in other projects, consult their current official documentation. |
| Authoring and maintenance | Runner fit, waiting behavior, assertions, isolation, and locator approach | Playwright documents auto-waiting, retrying assertions, isolated browser contexts, parallelism and sharding, and a test generator. These are capabilities, not proof that it will be faster or more reliable for every project. |
| Failure diagnosis | Whether the team can inspect traces, DOM state, logs, screenshots, or videos when something fails | Playwright documents Trace Viewer output including DOM snapshots, network requests, console logs, and screenshots. Hosted services describe artifacts such as logs, screenshots, videos, and network logs. |
| Execution and infrastructure | Local or CI execution, parallel capacity, required browser/OS coverage, and who maintains browser infrastructure | BrowserStack Automate and Browserbase offer hosted execution paths. Compare current concurrency limits, coverage, security requirements, and prices directly with each service. |
Playwright: a strong candidate for new cross-browser projects
Playwright is a sensible first evaluation when you are starting modern web tests or scripts and want a documented path across Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit. The project describes its scope as “reliable web automation for testing, scripting, and AI agents.” Its official site lists TypeScript, Python, .NET, and Java APIs.
What stands out
- The project documents auto-waiting and retrying assertions, which can reduce the amount of explicit synchronization code a test author writes.
- Isolated browser contexts support separating browser state between tests or sessions.
- Parallelism and sharding are documented options for distributing test execution.
- The test generator can help create test code, while Trace Viewer provides a way to inspect DOM snapshots, network requests, console logs, and screenshots.
Browser support needs precise expectations
Playwright documents Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, but those names should not be casually translated into exact branded-browser equivalence. Its WebKit build is not branded Safari, and its Firefox build uses project patches. The official browser guide also distinguishes bundled browser builds from branded Chrome and Edge channels; enterprise policies in branded browsers may affect whether Playwright can control them. If a release must be validated on a particular installed browser or enterprise-managed configuration, verify that exact arrangement rather than assuming a bundled build is interchangeable.
Consider it when: you are choosing a framework for a new project, its listed APIs fit your language, and its browser builds and runner align with your validation needs. Treat it as a candidate to evaluate, not an automatic choice for every team.

Selenium: consider it for an established ecosystem or language need
Selenium is the Selenium Browser Automation Project. It is worth evaluating when an existing test suite, team language, ecosystem, or browser and device compatibility requirement points toward it. Replacing a mature automation system solely because another framework is popular can add migration work without addressing a concrete problem.
A vendor comparison lists Java, Python, JavaScript, C#, Ruby, and Perl among Selenium’s languages and describes broad browser support. That is useful orientation, not a substitute for Selenium’s current documentation: check the project’s official guidance for the precise bindings and browser-driver combination your environment needs. Your evaluation should include how existing tests are maintained, how the team diagnoses failures, and how its chosen browsers are provisioned in CI.
Consider it when: the team already has Selenium tests, its language or ecosystem fits your constraints, or your compatibility requirements favor checking Selenium alongside newer alternatives.
Cypress: a conditional fit for a JavaScript-oriented test workflow
Cypress is a major end-to-end testing option to evaluate when your team’s existing JavaScript or TypeScript workflow and preferred developer experience align with it. The comparison source available for this guide characterizes Cypress as JavaScript-oriented, but it is not a sufficiently reliable basis for detailed claims about current browser coverage, runner behavior, or language support. Check Cypress’s current official documentation for those specifics before deciding.

Consider it when: the team is already standardized on Cypress or its established testing workflow is a good fit. Compare a representative test and its debugging path against the requirements that prompted your evaluation instead of relying on a broad ranking.
Puppeteer: a JavaScript library for browser control
Puppeteer is a browser automation library to consider when your scripts and team fit its JavaScript-oriented browser-control workflow. A vendor comparison associates it with Chrome/Chromium-centric use, but that is not enough to make a definitive claim about the current browser support of every Puppeteer version. Check the current Puppeteer documentation for supported browsers and APIs that matter to your project.
Consider it when: you have scripts or a browser-control task that fit its current API and browser support. If you are already using Puppeteer, compare the specific missing capability or maintenance issue before planning a migration.
Hosted execution: BrowserStack Automate or Browserbase
Framework selection and execution infrastructure are separate decisions. A hosted service may be useful if you do not want to maintain browser environments yourself, need managed sessions, or need artifacts and concurrency options. Both services describe capabilities from their own product perspective; these descriptions are not independent performance findings.

| BrowserStack Automate | Hosted browser and OS environments for frameworks including Selenium, Playwright, Cypress, and Puppeteer; parallel testing and artifacts such as logs, screenshots, videos, and network logs. | Confirm the precise browsers and operating systems you need, current inventory, plan limits, parallel capacity, security fit, and pricing on current product pages. |
| Browserbase | A cloud browser endpoint compatible with Playwright, Puppeteer, and Selenium; isolated browser instances, concurrent execution, session video, and DOM replay. Its product page says concurrency differs between free/starter and Scale plans. | Check current concurrency limits, plan details, browser requirements, security, and cost for your workload before committing. |
Do not choose a hosted plan from a remembered browser count or price: inventories, limits, and pricing can change. Establish a representative workload first, then confirm the current terms and whether the service exposes the artifacts your team actually uses to debug.
A practical decision process
- List the required browsers and operating systems. Separate a need for Chromium, Firefox, or WebKit from a requirement to test a branded browser, a managed enterprise setup, or a real-device environment.
- Choose the language and test architecture. Match available APIs and runner integration to the codebase and team skills. Verify current official support for any language or integration that is non-negotiable.
- Evaluate one representative workflow. Use a critical user journey or a script that reflects the waits, state, and browser behavior your tests actually need. Compare authoring and maintenance effort, not just how quickly a minimal example runs.
- Decide how failures will be diagnosed. Check whether the framework or hosted service captures the trace, logs, screenshots, video, DOM information, or network details your team needs.
- Keep infrastructure as a separate choice. Decide whether local and CI browser management is acceptable. If not, compare hosted services on required coverage, concurrency, artifacts, security, and current price.
- Check policy and operational constraints. Confirm that browser policies, credentials, data handling, and CI access work with the selected framework and any execution provider.
ScreenshotNeo: a browser-capture alternative to try first
If your goal is to capture website screenshots or PDFs rather than run an interactive test suite, ScreenshotNeo is a more direct fit than adopting a full browser-testing framework. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, and its parameter names also work with those used by other screenshot APIs. See ScreenshotNeo for the product overview and the API documentation for parameters and response details.
Or skip the browser setup
Use this cURL request to capture a page as WebP:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools named take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
Sign up for ScreenshotNeo free: 1,000 screenshots a month, no card required.

There is no neutral benchmark in the evidence for declaring one framework faster, more reliable, or cheaper for every workload. Run a small, representative evaluation instead. Measure the time and effort to author and maintain tests, how long a typical CI run takes under your planned parallelism, and how quickly a developer can diagnose a failed run. For hosted execution, include plan cost and limits at the concurrency and browser coverage you actually need; exact current prices and limits are not established here.

Reliability also depends on more than the framework name. Test isolation, application readiness, browser version, test data, and infrastructure can all affect a run. Playwright documents auto-waiting and isolated contexts, but those capabilities do not remove the need for meaningful assertions, controlled test data, or a stable application environment.
Troubleshooting your evaluation
A browser test passes locally but fails in CI
Compare the browser build, operating environment, policies, credentials, and test data used locally and in CI. Capture and inspect the available trace or logs rather than changing waits blindly. If the CI environment does not provide the browser or OS coverage you require, assess whether a hosted execution service would meet that requirement.
A test is flaky around page loading or interaction
Inspect what the test is waiting for and whether the application is actually ready for the next action. Playwright documents auto-waiting and retrying assertions; in any framework, use its current recommended synchronization patterns and assertions. Avoid treating a longer arbitrary delay as proof that the underlying race has been fixed.
The required browser does not match the framework’s browser build
Spell out whether the requirement is a browser engine, a branded browser, or a particular managed installation. For Playwright, WebKit is not branded Safari, and branded Chrome or Edge may behave differently under enterprise policies. Confirm the exact browser and control path before interpreting a framework’s engine support as sufficient.
A hosted plan appears to lack the capacity or artifacts you need
Recheck current plan terms with the provider. Browserbase says concurrency differs between free/starter and Scale, and hosted inventories and limits can change. Validate required concurrency, browser coverage, and debugging artifacts against the current plan before moving a workload.
You cannot determine current support from a comparison chart
Use a comparison as a shortlist, not as the final feature matrix. Check the relevant project’s current official documentation for language bindings, browser support, runner capabilities, and version-specific behavior, especially for Cypress, Puppeteer, and Selenium details.
Quick Recap
Recommendation by situation
- New cross-browser test project: evaluate Playwright first if its APIs and browser builds match your requirements.
- Existing automation system or language constraint: evaluate Selenium alongside the current suite and confirm support in official documentation.
- Established Cypress or Puppeteer workflow: compare the workflow against a concrete requirement before considering migration.
- Need managed environments or hosted sessions: keep the framework decision separate and assess BrowserStack Automate or Browserbase against current coverage, capacity, artifacts, security, and price.
- Need screenshot or PDF capture rather than browser testing: evaluate ScreenshotNeo’s API or MCP server instead of setting up a testing framework for a capture task.
