If you want to read ebooks rather than search for book information, the best alternative depends on what you need: Calibre or another desktop reader for files you already have, a mobile reading app for a phone or tablet, a library app for borrowing, or a different store for buying and syncing books. One clarification matters: Google Books is primarily a book-search and preview service, while Google Play Books is Google’s ebook store and reading library. Google describes its discovery tool simply: “Book Search works just like web search.”
First, which Google service are you replacing?
Google Books helps you search book content, view previews where rights allow, and find places to buy or borrow a title. It is not the same product as Google Play Books, where readers can buy ebooks, upload compatible files, and read across devices. If your goal is to open a file on your computer, a desktop reader may be a better fit than either service. If you want to buy books and keep a synced library, compare ebook stores and their reading apps instead.
Best alternatives by what you want to do
Read or organize ebook files on a computer
- Calibre: Project Gutenberg recommends it for managing an ebook library, converting formats, and syncing books to devices. It is a strong starting point if your collection includes files from different sources.
- Thorium Reader: An open-source desktop reader for EPUB3 books, listed by Project Gutenberg.
- Sumatra PDF: A lightweight option for Windows that can also open EPUB files.
- Apple Books: Built into macOS, making it a convenient option for Mac users who want to read compatible books without installing a separate desktop reader.
These options focus on opening or organizing files, not necessarily on buying books through one store. Check that a reader supports the format of the files you have before moving your library.

For iPhone and iPad, Project Gutenberg lists Apple Books and other EPUB-reading apps. On Android, it lists Kindle, ReadEra, and Moon+ Reader. The best fit depends on your device and file workflow; an app that can read a local EPUB may not use the same process as a store-based library.
#1 Best Overall
- Light and compact - With adjustable brightness, high contrast ratio, and fast page turns.
- Effortless reading in any light - Read comfortably with a 6“ glare-free display, adjustable front light—now 25% brighter at max setting—and dark mode.
- Escape into your books - Tune out messages, emails, and social media with a distraction-free reading experience.
- Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
- Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.
Google Play Books, for example, handles a personal EPUB differently from a typical local-file reader: you upload the EPUB to your Play Books library, then open it in the app. Project Gutenberg’s mobile-device guidance lists platform options and workflows.
Buy books and keep a synced library
Google Play Books supports reading across more than one device, uploading files, changing text size and font, and adding bookmarks and notes. It remains a reasonable choice if those features suit you; you do not need to switch just because you are looking for an alternative to Google Books search.

- Our fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever – The next-generation 7“ Paperwhite display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.
- Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
- Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
- Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
Before choosing another store, consider the books you actually want to read. Available formats differ by title, and publisher-set DRM can limit actions such as printing. A convenient purchase library may also be less flexible for books you already own from other sources.

Project Gutenberg offers online reading and downloadable books. Its reading options describe ways to use downloads, sideloading, and cloud storage. For borrowing, library apps such as Libby may provide access to your local library’s ebooks; availability and setup depend on your library, location, and device.

If borrowing is the priority, check your library’s ebook service and confirm that it supports your device before settling on a reading app. For free public-domain books, online reading or a downloaded file can avoid the need to buy an ebook through a commercial store.
Use a dedicated e-reader—or skip the hardware
Kobo is one option if you want a dedicated device and plan to transfer EPUB files; Project Gutenberg documents an EPUB sideloading path. Kindle hardware is another option, but buying an e-reader is not required to read Kindle books. Amazon says Kindle books can also be read with apps on phones, tablets, and computers, or in a browser.

- What devices do you use? Check compatibility with your current computer, phone, tablet, or e-reader rather than choosing an app based on features alone.
- Do you need a store, a reader, or both? A store is useful for purchases and a unified library; a file reader may be better for books you already own.
- Which formats do your books use? Confirm format support and how files are added. Sideloading, uploading to a cloud library, and opening a local file are different workflows.
- Do you need to read across devices? A synced store library can be convenient, while a desktop-first library may require you to transfer or sync files yourself.
- Will you borrow from a library? Check that your local library offers ebook lending and that its app or file workflow works on your device.
- Do title-specific restrictions matter? DRM and publisher settings can affect what you can do with a particular ebook, including printing.
Is there a free alternative to Google Play Books?
Yes, depending on what you mean by “alternative.” Calibre, Thorium Reader, Sumatra PDF, and platform reading apps can serve as readers for compatible files, while Project Gutenberg provides public-domain books for online reading or download. Library apps can also offer ebooks to eligible borrowers, depending on local availability. These options do not all provide the same combination of a commercial bookstore, cloud uploads, and synced reading that Google Play Books does.
