For the strongest noise cancellation, start with the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen). For detailed, more neutral-sounding audio, consider the Sony WH-1000XM6. If long battery life matters most, the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless is a practical travel pick. None is best for every listener: sound preference and headphone fit are personal, and review comparisons do not establish a universal comfort winner.
Best AirPods Max alternatives at a glance
| Priority | Pick | Why it stands out |
| Noise cancellation | Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) | What Hi-Fi? and TechRadar identify Bose as a particularly effective ANC choice. What Hi-Fi? lists 30 hours of battery life; that is a reported figure, not a runtime measurement for this article. What Hi-Fi? |
| Sound detail and a more neutral presentation | Sony WH-1000XM6 | What Hi-Fi? praises its detail and openness; TechRadar describes it as more neutral and detailed than Bose. What Hi-Fi? and TechRadar |
| Battery life and travel practicality | Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless | Tom’s Guide reports 60 hours of battery life, Bluetooth 5.2, aptX Adaptive, and an included 3.5 mm cable. Best for noise cancellation: Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen)
The Bose is the clearest choice in these comparisons if your main goal is reducing noise around you. What Hi-Fi? calls its cancellation stronger than that of AirPods Max 2, while TechRadar also describes Bose ANC as highly effective. These are reviewers’ conclusions, not a universal lab ranking; how much a difference matters can depend on the noise and listening conditions. What Hi-Fi? TechRadar
What Hi-Fi? lists battery life at 30 hours. Treat that as a published figure rather than a guarantee of your runtime: settings and use affect how long headphones last between charges. Check the exact generation and local listing before buying, since names, availability, and prices can vary by market and change over time.
Best for sound detail: Sony WH-1000XM6
Choose the Sony if you prefer a more neutral presentation and want reviewers’ sound-focused alternative to the fuller, bass-forward character TechRadar attributes to Bose. What Hi-Fi? highlights the XM6’s detail and openness. Neither description makes one tuning objectively better: the right balance depends on what you like to hear. What Hi-Fi? TechRadar

Sony is a sound-led recommendation, not a claim that it beats Bose at every task. TechRadar characterizes some differences between the two models’ noise cancellation as small and dependent on listening conditions, so your priority should guide the choice.

Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. - Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.
Do not confuse the MOMENTUM 4 with the newer MOMENTUM 5 Wireless, which appears in What Hi-Fi?’s current main headphone list. Specifications for one generation should not be assumed to apply to the other. What Hi-Fi?

How to choose for comfort and fit
The available comparisons do not establish a consistent head-to-head ranking for clamp force, earcup space, heat, or fit across these models. That makes personal fit more useful than a blanket comfort claim. When possible, try a pair with your usual glasses and wear it long enough to judge pressure and heat. If you cannot try before buying, check the manufacturer’s fit and dimension information and confirm the seller’s return terms before ordering.

- Return policy: A return window can matter when fit cannot be judged in person.
Check compatibility and the exact model before buying
What Hi-Fi? notes that the alternatives in its guide work better with Android than AirPods Max, which do not expose all their features outside Apple devices. That does not mean every feature works identically across phones: check the specific model’s app support and codec compatibility for your device. What Hi-Fi?
Compare the exact generation, local availability, price, warranty, and return policy on the listing you intend to buy. Current prices and stock are volatile, and a model name alone may not make generation differences obvious. If you are also considering AirPods Max, make sure the comparison is with the current AirPods Max 2 reference rather than relying on older-generation coverage.
