The app in Akshay Bhalla’s story is PlugShare. He says it helped him find a public charging station he believed would work with his rental EV when the car was low on charge. It is a useful example of how a charger map can help in a stressful moment—not proof that any listed station will be compatible, working, or available when you arrive.
What happened on the drive
In a September 12, 2026 article, Akshay Bhalla recounts expecting to drive about 300 miles, leaving without a full charge, and then doing more driving than planned. On the return leg, he says the car showed 10% battery and an estimated 15–20 miles of range, while home was more than 150 miles away.
Bhalla says he first tried Google Maps but could not tell from the results whether a station had the right connector or charging speed. He then used PlugShare, which surfaced a station about five miles away. He says he charged there while getting coffee. These are details from one personal account, not independently verified measurements or a guarantee of what another driver will find. Akshay Bhalla’s account was also syndicated by Yahoo Autos; EVSHIFT carried the same article text, so those copies do not independently confirm the incident.

Why PlugShare was useful in the account
Bhalla describes PlugShare as a community-supported map of public charging stations. According to his article, station listings can include photos, plug information, charging-speed details, reviews, and a PlugScore based on recent experiences. The article also describes filters for connector type and charging speed, plus amenity searches such as restrooms and food.

- Provides fundamental wiring testing for EV charging systems with LED GO/NO GO indication; Complies with EMC Directive (2014/30/EU), the Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU), and EN61010-1 standards
- Indicates the status of the charger output socket (vehicle side); LED Indication and Chart Provides simple socket inspection conditions
- Proximity Pilot (PP) State (Cable Simulation) - Simulates 20A current capability between PP and PE conductors
- Built-In Control Pilot (CP) State (Vehicle Simulation Switch - Different vehicle states can be simulated: Vehicle states are simulated with different resistances connected between CP and PE conductors
- CP Error “E” simulation: Simulate the behavior of the station when there is an established short circuit between CP and PE
The connector types named in the article are CCS, NACS/J3400, CHAdeMO, and J1772. It gives Tesla Superchargers, Electrify America, EVgo, Blink, and ChargePoint as examples of networks represented, and describes coverage across North America, Europe, and Asia. These feature and coverage descriptions come from the article; they have not been independently confirmed against current app documentation.
How to use a charger map when range is low
- Check your vehicle and connector details. Use the car’s manual, charging-port label, rental paperwork, or rental company to identify the connector your vehicle accepts. The rental vehicle in Bhalla’s account is not named, so the story does not establish which connector he needed.
- Search near your route, not only your destination. Look for stations within a distance you can reach with a margin, taking the car’s displayed range and driving conditions into account. Estimated range is not a promise of how far the vehicle will travel.
- Filter for connector and charging speed. Select the connector that matches the car and a suitable charging speed or station type. A nearby listing is not useful if it cannot charge your vehicle.
- Review recent station information. Where available, look at recent photos, reviews, and ratings for signs the equipment is present and usable. A rating or recent review can inform a decision, but cannot confirm that a charger is working or unoccupied at this moment.
- Check practical amenities and navigate. If the app lists restrooms or food, those may help you choose between reachable options. Bhalla says PlugShare sent directions to Google Maps; check the route and the station details before setting off.
What the story does—and does not—show
The account illustrates the value of checking connector compatibility and station details rather than choosing solely by distance. It does not compare PlugShare with other apps in a controlled test, establish that Google Maps fails for other drivers, or show that PlugShare listings are always current. Before relying on a listing, verify the connector, check the latest available status information, and consider whether you have enough range to reach another option if the first station is unavailable.
