A modern JavaScript application is more than its UI framework or build tool. It combines browser capabilities, rendering, application structure, data and services, build and delivery, and security and operations. Treat these as responsibilities with clear boundaries; the exact stack and folder layout depend on the product and team.

What are the parts of a modern JavaScript application?

Think of an application as a set of connected responsibilities, not a prescribed stack. A component library can help produce an interface, and a build tool can prepare code for development and production, but neither choice settles every architectural question. Teams still need to decide how modules relate, where state belongs, how routes and data loading work, and how the finished application is deployed and maintained.

The layers below are a way to reason about those decisions. They are not a mandatory folder structure, and in a real codebase their boundaries may overlap.

Responsibility What it covers Questions it raises
Browser platform HTML, CSS, JavaScript modules, the DOM, and browser APIs. Which browser capabilities does the application rely on? What browser versions must it support?
UI and rendering Reusable interface pieces, their composition, and where rendering occurs. Should output be rendered in the browser, on a server, or ahead of time?
Application structure Module boundaries, state ownership, routing, and the separation of domain behavior from view code. Which parts own a decision or piece of state? How should modules depend on one another?
Data and services Requests to APIs, loading and updating data, error handling, and connections to backend services. Where does data come from, how does the interface represent loading or failure, and which layer handles each concern?
Build and delivery Local development, code transformation and bundling, asset output, configuration, and deployment. What runs during development, what artifacts are produced for release, and how are they delivered?
Security and operations Input handling, browser policies, dependencies, deployment practices, monitoring, and version maintenance. Where can untrusted input enter? How will the application be secured, observed, and kept current?

How do the UI framework and build tool fit in?

The UI layer renders the interface

A UI library or framework helps describe and render an interface; it does not, by itself, define the whole application. React describes itself as a library for building user interfaces. Its documentation covers client rendering as well as server and static rendering APIs, so choosing React does not automatically mean choosing a single-page, browser-only rendering model.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Components are useful as reusable units, but component boundaries are only one part of architecture. A maintainable design also makes it possible to understand relationships between modules and to keep application or domain behavior from becoming inseparable from view code. React’s learning and UI documentation discusses components and modeling how parts of an interface relate; the particular module structure remains an application decision.

The build tool supports development and production delivery

A build tool has a different job. Vite describes itself in its official Getting Started documentation as a build tool that aims to provide a faster and leaner development experience for modern web projects. Its documented functions include a development server with hot module replacement and a production build command that emits optimized static assets.

Those functions help developers work on an application and prepare its assets for deployment. They do not, on their own, decide the app’s route model, state ownership, API design, or backend integration. Nor should a build tool’s description be treated as an independent performance measurement.

The architecture connects the pieces

In a small project, some of these responsibilities may live close together. In a larger one, teams may separate them into modules, services, or other boundaries. The useful test is whether the team can tell where a behavior belongs and how a change will flow through the system—not whether the project matches a fashionable diagram or folder tree.

How should application structure and data flow be designed?

Start by assigning ownership. Decide which module owns a domain rule, which part owns a piece of state, and where network interaction and error handling happen. Keep rendering code focused on presenting application state where practical, while avoiding unnecessary layers that make simple behavior harder to follow.

A typical interaction can be reasoned about as a sequence:

  1. A user action occurs in the interface, such as submitting a form.
  2. The application validates or interprets the action according to its domain rules.
  3. A data or service layer sends a request to the relevant backend service.
  4. The application handles the result, including loading, success, and failure cases.
  5. The interface renders the resulting state.

This is a conceptual flow, not a required implementation pattern. A framework may supply conventions or mechanisms for routing and data loading; a library-centered or from-scratch setup may require the team to choose and integrate those pieces. React’s from-scratch guidance cautions that developers taking that route are responsible for concerns a framework can provide.

For each route or major feature, useful design questions include:

Where should rendering happen?

Rendering location is a product and operational choice, not a universal ranking of architectures. React documents client, server, and static rendering APIs, but the existence of those options does not establish that one is best for every application.

Approach What it means Questions to weigh
Client rendering The browser runs JavaScript to render the interface. How much code must reach the browser, when is it loaded, and what initial rendering and interactivity requirements apply?
Server rendering A server renders output for delivery to the browser, with client-side behavior added as the application requires. What server-side rendering and deployment responsibilities can the team support, and which parts need client interactivity?
Static rendering Output is generated ahead of time rather than for each visitor request. Can the relevant content be generated in advance, and how will updates and dynamic data be handled?

Evaluate each option against the actual experience the product needs, its data and update patterns, the amount of client JavaScript required, and the team’s ability to build and operate it. If loading speed or bundle size is a deciding factor, measure the application under representative conditions rather than assuming a rendering mode will be faster.

How do you choose a framework and the rest of the stack?

First decide how much structure the project needs from its framework. A framework may supply conventions and integrated facilities for routing, data loading, or other concerns. A library-centered or from-scratch approach can leave more choices open, but it also leaves more integration and maintenance work to the team. React’s from-scratch guide explicitly highlights that trade-off.

Then compare viable options against the application’s requirements rather than choosing by trend:

What should you consider for build, deployment, and browser support?

Keep the development workflow distinct from production delivery. A local development server and hot module replacement improve the editing loop; a production build produces assets intended for deployment. The deployment environment then has its own configuration and operational requirements. Vite documents both development-server and production-build functions, but those do not constitute a complete application architecture or deployment plan.

Browser targets are version-sensitive. Vite’s documentation says its default production target is based on a date fixed for each major release. Therefore, do not assume a default target or browser-support statement applies to every version of Vite. Identify the tool version, check its current documentation, and compare its target with the browsers the product actually promises to support.

Framework APIs, recommended starting points, and tool defaults can change. Use implementation-specific guidance only after checking the official documentation for the relevant versions; an older tutorial’s setup requirements may no longer describe a current release.

How should security shape the design?

Security is part of the architecture because data crosses boundaries between users, services, and browser APIs. OWASP warns that passing untrusted data—such as an API response—to innerHTML can allow malicious JavaScript to execute in the browser. Treat rendering untrusted content as a concrete review point: know where it originates and avoid inserting it as executable markup unless it has been handled safely for that context.

Content Security Policy (CSP) provides another browser-level control. MDN recommends setting a strict CSP where possible; when that is not possible, it recommends at least a policy that disallows inline JavaScript. CSP is not a substitute for reviewing input handling and rendering paths, and these examples are not a complete security assessment of a particular application.

Security and operations also include dependency and deployment practices, monitoring, and version maintenance. Those responsibilities should be considered alongside the specific risks of the application, rather than inferred from the choice of framework or build tool.

Is there a book on JavaScript application architecture?

Nicolas G. Bevacqua’s JavaScript Application Design: A Build First Approach is a directly relevant reference. Manning lists it as a 344-page book published in January 2015, with subjects including JavaScript modularity, maintainable applications, asynchronous flows, MVC, REST API design, and automated development, testing, and deployment workflows. Its publication date matters: use it for architectural concepts, not as current documentation for today’s framework or build-tool versions.
