Best overall: the Blueair Blue Pure 311i+ Max is the strongest all-around fit for a typical larger enclosed room. For smaller spaces, choose the Levoit Core 300S-P; the Coway Airmega Mighty2 is the balanced mid-room option; and the high-capacity Coway Airmega ProX is the choice for very large enclosed spaces or unusually high smoke-particle loads.

The most important buying rule is to size an air purifier by smoke CADR, not by the largest square-foot number printed on the box. The recommendations below use current published CADR, room-size and operating specifications, plus CARB and ENERGY STAR listing evidence. They are not the result of in-house lab testing.

Quick comparison

CADR, or clean air delivery rate, estimates how quickly a purifier delivers filtered air. For fine particles such as wildfire smoke and tobacco smoke, smoke CADR is the most useful number because it represents the smallest particles in the standard CADR tests.

Pick Best use Smoke CADR Published room reference Notable evidence
Blueair Blue Pure 311i+ Max Overall; larger enclosed room 300 cfm 526 sq. ft. at 4.8 ACH Exact model appears on CARB’s current certified-device list
Levoit Core 300S-P Small bedroom, nursery or office 141 cfm 219 sq. ft. at 4.8 ACH CARB lists the Core 300S as mechanical
Coway Airmega Mighty2 Balanced mid-room performance 240 cfm Use CADR matching; its 1,800-sq.-ft. figure is at 1 ACH AP-1512N variants are listed by CARB as mechanical
Coway Airmega ProX Very large room or high smoke capacity 577 cfm 894 sq. ft. in the ENERGY STAR record 581-cfm PM2.5 CADR; 0.0 ppb ozone listed

ACH means air changes per hour. These room references are not interchangeable: a one-air-change-per-hour claim is much less aggressive than a 4.8-ACH reference. EPA’s CADR guidance is the better way to compare room fit.

How to size an air purifier before choosing a model

Measure the room’s length and width, then compare its area with the purifier’s smoke CADR. For an eight-foot ceiling, EPA’s practical minimum CADRs are approximately:

  • AHAM VERIFIDE, PROVEN PERFORMANCE: AHAM VERIFIDE with a CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) rating of 143 CFM for smoke, 153 CFM for dust, and 167 CFM for pollen—refreshing air in a 222 ft² room 4.8 times per hour and a 1,073 ft² room once per hour
  • GENUINE REPLACEMENT FILTERS: For the best performance and longest lifespan, use official Levoit filters designed specifically for Levoit air purifiers. Levoit replacement filters ensure the best fit and high-efficiency filtration, while off-brand filters may be unreliable and may damage your Levoit air purifier
  • FIND COMFORT: Our filter has strong filtration performance of fine particles. 99.97% filtration efficiency for 0.1 to 0.3μm airborne particulates, including pollen, dust, and animal dander allergens. Tested by an independent lab
Room area Approximate minimum CADR
100 sq. ft. 65 cfm
200 sq. ft. 130 cfm
300 sq. ft. 195 cfm
400 sq. ft. 260 cfm
500 sq. ft. 325 cfm
600 sq. ft. 390 cfm

These are estimates, not guarantees. Add capacity for ceilings higher than eight feet, open floor plans, unusually smoky conditions or rooms with doors that are frequently open. In an open-concept home, treat the entire connected area as the space the purifier must serve, or use more than one unit.

Also remember that CADR is generally measured at the highest fan speed. A purifier running quietly on low will filter less air than its advertised maximum. For smoke, a higher setting and longer runtime generally matter more than a low noise rating alone.

1. Blueair Blue Pure 311i+ Max: best overall

The Blueair Blue Pure 311i+ Max is the best compromise in this group for a larger bedroom, living room or other enclosed room. Its 300-cfm smoke CADR is more than twice the Levoit Core 300S-P’s 141 cfm and higher than the Coway Mighty2’s 240 cfm, while its published 38-watt power use is moderate for its capacity.

Key specifications

  • Smoke, dust and pollen CADR: 300 cfm each
  • Published room reference: 526 sq. ft. at 4.8 ACH
  • Published noise: 23–50 dB
  • Published power: 38 W
  • Filtration: one Particle & Carbon filter using Blueair’s HEPASilent Dual technology
  • Airflow: air exits from the top of the unit

Its top outlet can be useful when the purifier is positioned in a room rather than tucked beneath furniture. It also offers auto and night-oriented functions, making it a practical choice for people who want the purifier to adjust operation without constant manual control.

How large a room can it really serve?

Blueair’s 526-square-foot figure is specifically tied to 4.8 air changes per hour. It should not be treated as a universal guarantee for every 526-square-foot space. EPA’s rough smoke-CADR table calls for about 325 cfm for 500 square feet with an eight-foot ceiling, so the 311i+ Max is a more comfortable fit for roughly a large 400-square-foot room by that comparison, or a smaller 500-square-foot room with less demanding conditions. High ceilings, open doors and wildfire smoke are reasons to size up.

Who should buy it?

Choose it if you want one well-balanced purifier for an enclosed living room, large bedroom or multipurpose room and do not need the extreme capacity of the ProX.

Important caveat

Blueair calls the filtration system HEPASilent Dual; that is the manufacturer’s exact terminology. Do not automatically rewrite it as a generic “True HEPA” system. Also check the current replacement-filter price before buying. Blueair notes that some CADR and room-size figures changed with the Department of Energy’s labeling standards, so older packaging or older reviews may show different numbers.

2. Levoit Core 300S-P: best for a small room

The Levoit Core 300S-P is the appropriately sized choice for a bedroom, nursery, home office or similarly enclosed small room. Its 141-cfm smoke CADR is enough for the approximate 200-square-foot range under EPA’s eight-foot-ceiling guidance, while its compact body and smart controls make it easy to live with.

Key specifications

  • Smoke CADR: 141 cfm
  • Published room reference: 219 sq. ft. at 4.8 ACH
  • Alternative manufacturer claim: 1,051 sq. ft. at 1 ACH
  • Published noise: 22–50 dB
  • Published power: 23 W
  • Size and weight: 8.7 × 8.7 × 14.2 inches; 5.95 lb
  • Controls: app scheduling, timers and Alexa or Google Assistant voice control

The low published noise figure and remote scheduling are especially useful in a bedroom. You can schedule operation around sleep or turn the unit on before entering the room without keeping it at maximum speed all night.

Why the 1,051-square-foot number should not drive your decision

The 1,051-square-foot claim assumes only one air change per hour. That is not the same cleaning target as the 219-square-foot figure at 4.8 ACH, and it is not the appropriate comparison for this guide. For smoke and other fine particles, use the 141-cfm CADR and the room-size table above.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who should buy it?

Buy the Core 300S-P when the purifier will serve one small, enclosed room and you value a small footprint, low-speed quietness and app-based scheduling more than maximum airflow.

Certification caveat

The manufacturer identifies the reviewed product as the Core 300S-P, while CARB’s listing names the Core 300S as a mechanical device. Levoit also describes the product as ozone-free. Keep those facts tied to the listed model and manufacturer information rather than extending them to every Levoit purifier.

3. Coway Airmega Mighty2: best balanced mid-room pick

The Coway Airmega Mighty2 sits between the compact Levoit and the high-capacity ProX. It provides more airflow than a small-room model without becoming a large premium appliance, and it adds useful sensors and automatic modes.

Key specifications

  • Smoke CADR: 240 cfm
  • Dust CADR: 242 cfm
  • Pollen CADR: 249 cfm
  • Filtration: washable pre-filter plus a Max2 activated-carbon-and-HEPA filter
  • Published noise: 19–50 dB
  • Published power: 56 W
  • Size and weight: 16.9 × 17.9 × 9.3 inches; 15.2 lb
  • Controls and sensors: PM1, PM2.5 and PM10 sensor; auto, sleep, eco and turbo modes
  • Filter life: Coway lists a one-year expectation for the main filter

The washable pre-filter can reduce the amount of dust and hair reaching the main filter, provided it is cleaned as directed. The particle sensor and auto mode are useful if you want the purifier to respond to changing room conditions rather than running at one fixed setting.

How to interpret its room claims

Coway’s direct product information includes a 1,800-square-foot figure at one air change per hour. That is not a strong-cleaning-room recommendation for smoke or other fine particles. For practical sizing, its 240-cfm smoke CADR places it around the mid-room category: roughly enough for a 300-square-foot room under EPA’s basic table, and near the boundary for 400 square feet depending on ceiling height, room layout and the desired margin.

Who should buy it?

Choose the Mighty2 for a medium bedroom, office, dining area or living room when you want more capacity than the Core 300S-P but do not need the ProX’s much higher airflow.

Model and certification caveat

Use the exact current name Airmega Mighty2, also associated with AP-1512N variants in certification records. CARB lists those variants as mechanical devices. Do not confuse this model with similarly named older Mighty or Airmega products, whose specifications may differ.

4. Coway Airmega ProX: best for very large rooms or high smoke capacity

The Coway Airmega ProX is the capacity choice. Its current ENERGY STAR record lists a 577-cfm smoke CADR, 586-cfm dust CADR, 450-cfm pollen CADR and 581-cfm PM2.5 CADR—the highest particle-cleaning figures among these four models by a wide margin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Key specifications

  • Smoke CADR: 577 cfm
  • Dust CADR: 586 cfm
  • Pollen CADR: 450 cfm
  • PM2.5 CADR: 581 cfm
  • ENERGY STAR room reference: 894 sq. ft.
  • Integrated energy factor: 10.2
  • Annual energy use in the ENERGY STAR record: 335 kWh/year
  • Technology: fan-and-filter
  • Controls: automatic mode with an air-quality sensor
  • Ozone listing: 0.0 ppb in the ENERGY STAR record
  • Efficiency status: ENERGY STAR Most Efficient

Consumer Reports’ 2025 roundup independently highlighted the ProX for performance. That is useful third-party context, but it is not an in-house test result from this publication.

Who should buy it?

The ProX makes sense for a large enclosed great room, sizable basement, large studio or other space where smoke and PM2.5 capacity matter more than a compact footprint. It is also the most defensible choice of these four when the room is near the upper end of the sizing table.

Important caveat

This is a large, premium appliance. Do not interpret its room figure—or any manufacturer’s one-air-change figure—as proof that one portable purifier cleans an entire house. Portable air cleaners are intended for a room or defined area. Open floor plans, multiple levels and high ceilings may require additional capacity or multiple units.

The 0.0-ppb ozone figure belongs to the ProX’s ENERGY STAR record. It should not be generalized to the other three models. CARB lists the ProX variants as mechanical devices, but certification and efficiency records are not the same thing as a universal performance ranking.

Why these four made the list

This is an evidence-led buying guide, not a claim that we personally chamber-tested these products. The selection uses four kinds of evidence:

  1. Particle-cleaning capacity: published smoke CADR is the primary comparison because it is the most relevant standard metric for fine particles.
  2. Room matching: manufacturer room claims were retained with their ACH conditions, while EPA’s eight-foot-ceiling CADR guidance was used to avoid treating a low one-ACH number as equivalent to a high-cleaning-rate recommendation.
  3. Current certification records: the exact models or relevant variants were checked against CARB’s certified-device information. The ProX also has a current ENERGY STAR product record.
  4. Practical fit: noise range, power, controls, sensor features, filter design and physical scale determine which model makes sense for a particular room.

Consumer Reports performs chamber-based smoke, dust and noise testing, and its 2025 roundup provided independent context for the ProX and Blueair 311i+ Max. Those results should be understood as third-party testing, not as our own test results.

Why CADR matters more than a marketing room number

Room-size labels can use different assumptions. A purifier rated for a very large area at one air change per hour may deliver less frequent cleaning than a smaller-looking rating at 4.8 ACH. CADR puts the models on a more comparable footing, although it is still normally measured at maximum fan speed.

For a smoke-heavy situation, compare the smoke CADR first. For general dust or pollen, dust and pollen CADR can add context. Do not assume that a large particle CADR automatically means the purifier is equally effective at removing gases or odors.

What an air purifier can—and cannot—do

It can supplement source control and ventilation

A portable purifier can reduce airborne particles while it runs, but filtration is a supplement to controlling the source and bringing in clean, adequately filtered air. It does not remove every pollutant from a home, and performance depends on room size, fan speed, filter condition and placement.

It is not a medical treatment

Reducing airborne particles may help some people, but studies generally show possible health improvements that are small and not always perceptible. Do not treat any of these products as a cure for asthma or allergies, a guarantee against illness, or a substitute for medical care.

It does not fix mold

A purifier may capture some airborne particles associated with a mold problem, but it cannot remove the moisture source or remediate contaminated materials. Fix leaks, condensation and humidity problems and address the mold source directly.

Carbon can help with some odors, but gas performance is hard to compare

Activated carbon is useful when odor and some gaseous pollutants are a concern. However, CADR is a particle metric, and there is no widely used portable-device performance rating for gas removal. Avoid promises such as “removes all VOCs” or assume that a carbon layer provides the same result as a large, purpose-built gas filter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Avoid intentional ozone generators

EPA identifies ozone as a lung irritant. Some ionizers, electrostatic precipitators, plasma devices and certain UV configurations may emit ozone, so shoppers should be cautious about devices that intentionally generate it. For the products in this guide, describe only the model-specific evidence: CARB lists the Blueair 311i+ Max as electronic, while it lists the Core 300S, Mighty2 variants and ProX variants as mechanical. The ProX’s ENERGY STAR record specifically reports 0.0 ppb ozone emissions; that number does not establish the same result for the other models.

Placement and maintenance checklist

  1. Measure first. Calculate the enclosed room’s length × width and compare it with smoke CADR. Add capacity for ceilings above eight feet, open layouts or substantial smoke exposure.
  2. Put it where people spend time. A purifier is most useful in the occupied room rather than hidden in a hallway or unused corner.
  3. Keep the airflow clear. Do not block the inlet or outlet with curtains, furniture or a wall. Follow the clearance instructions in the model’s manual.
  4. Use the speed the situation requires. High speed cleans more air but is louder. For smoke, use a higher setting when practical and continue running the unit rather than relying on a brief burst.
  5. Maintain the pre-filter. Clean a washable pre-filter when directed. The Mighty2 specifically includes one; do not assume the main filter on any model can be washed.
  6. Replace the main filter on schedule. Follow the filter indicator or manual. Coway lists a one-year main-filter expectation for the Mighty2, but replacement intervals and costs differ across models.
  7. Check replacement-filter cost before purchase. A purifier with an attractive upfront price can be expensive to operate if its proprietary filter is costly or difficult to find.
  8. Do not use ENERGY STAR as a cleaning-performance ranking. ENERGY STAR is an efficiency signal. It does not mean that every ENERGY STAR purifier has the highest particle CADR.

Which one should you buy?

  • Choose the Blueair Blue Pure 311i+ Max for the best overall balance in a larger enclosed room.
  • Choose the Levoit Core 300S-P for a small bedroom, nursery or office where compact size and scheduling matter.
  • Choose the Coway Airmega Mighty2 for a mid-sized room and a useful combination of sensors, modes and moderate airflow.
  • Choose the Coway Airmega ProX when the room is very large or you want the highest smoke and PM2.5 CADR in this group.

US pricing, stock, warranty terms and replacement-filter costs change quickly, so verify those details on the day you buy. Most importantly, match the purifier to the room and the particle problem instead of choosing solely by the biggest advertised square-foot number.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is smoke CADR more important than a purifier’s advertised square-foot rating?

For fine particles such as wildfire smoke, yes. Smoke CADR is a more useful comparison because room-size claims can use different air-change assumptions. A one-ACH rating should not be treated as equivalent to a 4.8-ACH rating.

Can an air purifier remove mold?

It may capture some airborne particles, but it does not remove the moisture source or remediate mold-contaminated materials. Fix leaks, condensation and humidity problems and address the mold directly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can one portable purifier clean an entire house?

Usually not. Portable purifiers are intended for a single room or defined area. Open floor plans, high ceilings, multiple levels and closed doors can require a larger unit or multiple purifiers.

Were these four air purifiers tested by this publication?

No. These recommendations are based on current published CADR and operating specifications, EPA sizing guidance, CARB and ENERGY STAR records, and independent-testing context from Consumer Reports. They are not in-house lab-test results.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Start with the room, then compare smoke CADR. The Blueair Blue Pure 311i+ Max is the best all-around fit, the Levoit Core 300S-P is the sensible small-room choice, the Coway Airmega Mighty2 is the balanced mid-room option, and the Coway Airmega ProX offers the most capacity for very large enclosed spaces. None replaces source control, ventilation, mold remediation or medical care.
