Ask one question: Would this test fail if you deliberately broke the behavior it claims to protect? If the answer is no—or you cannot identify what change would make it fail—the test may run successfully without detecting a meaningful defect. This is a quick mutation-testing-inspired screen, not a validated 15-second protocol or proof that a test is worthless.

How to do the quick screen

  1. Name the behavior. State what the code is meant to do in a concrete, observable way, such as rejecting an invalid input or returning the correct result for a boundary value.
  2. Imagine a small, plausible break. For example, change a comparison from less-than to less-than-or-equal, remove a validation check, or return the wrong value for one case. The change should violate the behavior the test claims to cover.
  3. Check whether the test would notice. Would the test fail because it asserts the expected result or an observable side effect? If the code could be wrong and the test still pass, the test has not demonstrated protection for that behavior.

The point is not to prove a test worthless in 15 seconds. It is to spot a mismatch between what a test appears to cover and what it actually distinguishes. If the behavior is hard to name or the imagined defect is not relevant, inspect the test and its requirements rather than treating the screen as a verdict.

What passing and coverage do—and do not—show

A passing test shows that the test and current implementation agreed on that run. It does not establish that the test would catch a meaningful regression. An assertion can be present yet too broad, aimed at an incidental detail, or satisfied even when the intended behavior is broken.

Code coverage can help locate executed code, but execution alone is not evidence that the test would detect a fault. The 2024 MuTAP paper motivates mutation testing in part by noting the weak correlation between coverage and test effectiveness. Its reported 93.57% mutation score was for its evaluation on synthetic buggy code; it is not a general target or expected result for a project. Read the MuTAP paper record.

How mutation testing turns the question into evidence

Mutation testing makes the screen operational: it introduces small artificial faults—mutants—then checks whether the test suite detects them. A mutant that remains undetected can reveal a missing assertion or an untested behavior, provided that mutant represents a relevant defect. Some mutants are irrelevant or effectively equivalent to the original code, so a surviving mutant is a prompt to investigate, not an automatic diagnosis.

Google Research describes an industrial approach designed to reduce the cost and noise of mutation testing by running incrementally on changed code and filtering and prioritizing mutants. Its 2021 code-review evaluation involved more than 24,000 developers across more than 1,000 projects. A separate analysis of 15 million mutants reported that developers using mutation testing wrote more tests and improved suites, with evidence connecting mutants to historical real faults. These findings support mutation testing as useful evidence, not a guarantee that every generated test—or any one mutation score—ensures quality. What recent evaluations say about AI-generated tests

AI-generated tests need to be evaluated against faults, not just counted or run. A 2026 Association for Computational Linguistics benchmark paper by Yuxuan Sun and coauthors describes more than 2,636 mutated variants derived from 800 original instances, including a multilingual subset spanning nine programming languages. In that benchmark setup, DeepSeek-V3.1 had a 10.20% verification rate and a 36.15% detection rate. Those are results for that model and benchmark, not general rates for AI-generated tests.

The same paper reports average detection rates falling from 71.04% to 39.81% when its more realistic agentic mutation strategy was used instead of conventional mutation methods. The change underscores that measured performance depends on the faults and evaluation setup; a test suite that handles simpler mutations may miss harder, more realistic ones. Check stability separately from assertions

A test can assert the right thing and still be unreliable if it passes or fails unpredictably on unchanged code. In a 2026 study of LLM-generated database tests for SAP HANA, DuckDB, MySQL, and SQLite, Alexander Berndt and coauthors manually inspected 115 flaky tests; 72 (63%) depended on an order that was not guaranteed. The study also reports that LLMs can carry flakiness from supplied context into generated tests. These findings apply to the study’s database tests, not to all AI-generated tests or repositories.

For a practical stability check, run the test repeatedly under the project’s normal conditions and look for dependence on unspecified ordering or other changing context. Treat inconsistent results as a separate defect from weak assertions: repeated passes cannot make a test meaningful if it would not fail on a relevant bug. Read the 2026 database-test flakiness study.

A practical way to judge a generated test

Check Useful evidence What it cannot establish alone
Behavior discrimination A plausible, behavior-changing defect makes the test fail. That the test covers every important behavior or defect.
Fault relevance The imagined defect or surviving mutant corresponds to a plausible failure in the feature. That every surviving mutant matters; some may be irrelevant or equivalent.
Edge cases The test checks meaningful boundary and invalid-input cases for the requirement. That a count of cases is a measure of effectiveness.
Stability Results repeat under normal conditions without relying on unspecified ordering. That stable results imply strong assertions.

This is a practical set of questions, not a standardized score. A quick mental mutation is inexpensive but only offers a hypothesis; automated mutation testing provides observed responses to injected faults at greater scope and cost, with relevance and interpretation still requiring judgment. Repeated execution can expose instability, but does not measure whether assertions catch defects.
