The best Google Drive alternative depends on what you want to replace: file storage, collaborative documents, private storage, media playback, or Google’s broader ecosystem. Sync.com is a strong all-round option in Cloudwards’ comparison, Proton Drive stands out for encrypted storage with native document collaboration, and pCloud is better suited to storing and playing media than editing files. For Microsoft-centric work, compare OneDrive and Box; for backup, consider IDrive. None is a universal replacement for every Google Drive workflow.
How to choose a Google Drive alternative
Start with the work you actually do. A service built around syncing and sharing files may not include collaborative document editors; a backup-focused product may not behave like a shared work drive. Check these points before switching:
- Privacy: Find out whether encryption is provider-managed or client-side, what data it covers, and whether the service can access the keys. “Encrypted” alone does not tell you whether the provider can decrypt files.
- Documents: Distinguish native editors from integrations with Microsoft Office or Google Workspace. An integration is not necessarily a full replacement for Google Docs, Sheets, and their collaboration features.
- Sync and sharing: Check desktop and mobile support, shared-folder behavior, permissions, and whether the service is designed for ongoing sync, backup, or media storage.
- Capacity and cost: Compare the same storage amount, billing period, and region. Cloudwards’ prices are editorial snapshots, not current provider quotes; verify the plan directly before paying.
- Operating model: A managed service is easier to start using. Self-hosting gives you more control but makes setup and maintenance your responsibility.
Cloudwards’ comparison, last updated October 1, 2026, covers the ten services below. Its rankings, feature descriptions, and speed-test observations are the publisher’s assessments, not independent testing by iTechGuides.
The 10 best Google Drive alternatives
1. Sync.com: a strong all-round alternative
Cloudwards names Sync.com its top Google Drive alternative, citing Microsoft Office integration, client-side encryption across storage, collaboration, and secure sharing controls. That combination makes it worth considering if you want cloud file storage with office-work workflows and an emphasis on privacy. Cloudwards also reports slower performance in its tests and a simple desktop sync-folder model, so users who need fast transfers or more flexible sync behavior should check whether those limitations matter to their workflow.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
2. pCloud: best suited to media storage and playback
pCloud is a reasonable choice if your priority is keeping media files and playing them back, rather than editing documents with other people. Cloudwards says it lacks document editing and collaboration. It also describes client-side encryption as a paid add-on limited to one folder, so do not assume that all stored files receive that protection. Confirm the current add-on terms and plan details with pCloud.
3. Internxt: a privacy-oriented option
Cloudwards includes Internxt among its alternatives and frames it around privacy and security. The comparison does not establish enough current feature detail to make a specific claim about encryption coverage, collaboration, or plan limits here. Check Internxt’s current documentation against your requirements before moving sensitive files.
Rank #2
- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
4. Proton Drive: encrypted storage with native document tools
Cloudwards describes Proton Drive as providing client-side encryption across storage and native Proton Docs and Sheets. Its comparison also reports real-time collaboration in Docs and Sheets. That makes Proton Drive a candidate for people who want storage and document collaboration in a privacy-focused service, but those features do not establish full parity with Google Workspace. Confirm that the editors support the formats and collaboration workflow you depend on.
5. Icedrive: a simpler storage option
Cloudwards lists Icedrive as a user-friendly alternative with an encrypted-folder option. The same comparison says it lacks document editing and collaboration and reports slow speeds in its testing. It may fit straightforward storage needs, but it is not a direct substitute for a collaborative Google Docs workflow.
Rank #3
- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac

- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
6. Koofr: consider it if Office collaboration matters
Cloudwards’ comparison row describes Microsoft Office collaboration for Koofr. The available details do not establish which plans include that capability or its exact scope. Verify current plan terms and test the workflow you need before treating it as an Office-based collaboration replacement.
7. IDrive: a storage and backup-oriented choice
Cloudwards includes IDrive as a storage and backup option and shows a 5TB plan in its comparison table. That figure is a listing in the publisher’s comparison, not a guarantee of current availability or price. Before choosing IDrive as a Drive replacement, confirm the current plan and make sure its backup features match your needs for shared files and everyday syncing.
Rank #4
- Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
8. Box: a collaboration option for organizational needs
Cloudwards lists Microsoft Office and Google Workspace integrations for Box. Its business-oriented plans may be relevant to organizations with collaboration requirements, but the comparison alone does not establish which features are included at each tier. Review Box’s current plan details, administrative controls, and integration terms for your organization before committing.

Cloudwards includes Dropbox as a familiar file-sync and sharing service and lists Microsoft Office and Google Workspace integrations. Its comparison’s plan assessment does not list client-side encryption for Dropbox; that is not the same as saying files are unencrypted. Check Dropbox’s current security documentation and the exact plan’s protections if encryption access is a deciding factor.

10. OneDrive: the natural fit for Microsoft users
OneDrive is the Microsoft-ecosystem option in this list. The available comparison details do not establish current plan pricing or feature terms, so check Microsoft’s current OneDrive offering rather than relying on an old price or assumed bundle.

If you want to run your own platform instead of relying on one of these managed providers, Nextcloud is a separate route rather than another turnkey storage subscription. Nextcloud describes itself as an open-source content collaboration platform. Self-hosting means arranging the server or hosting, setup, updates, backups, and ongoing maintenance yourself; consider it only if that operational responsibility is acceptable.
How to move files from Google Drive
Moving files is not just a matter of copying a folder. A destination service may treat shared files, permissions, Google-native documents, and version history differently. Before migrating, check how your chosen service handles those items and make sure you have enough destination capacity.
Recommended Free Tools
- Inventory what you use. Identify files, shared folders, Google Docs or Sheets, and any permissions or workflows you need to preserve.
- Choose the destination by workflow. Confirm it supports the required editors, platforms, sharing controls, and privacy model—not just the amount of storage.
- Check migration behavior. Review the destination provider’s current guidance for importing Google Drive content, especially native Google documents and shared items. Do not assume all formats, permissions, or history transfer intact.
- Copy and verify before deleting anything. Compare file counts and open a sample of important documents from the new service. Keep the original Drive files until you have confirmed the transfer and collaboration workflow works.
Free storage and plan prices
Free quotas and paid plans change, so use provider pages for a purchase decision. As a dated comparison snapshot, Cloudwards’ October 1, 2026 table lists Sync.com at 5GB free and 2TB for $4.80 per month on a one-year plan; pCloud at 10GB free and 2TB for $8.33 per month on a one-year plan; and Proton Drive at 5GB free and 200GB for $3.99 per month on a one-year plan. These are Cloudwards’ published figures, not current official quotes, and should not be compared as though the paid capacities were identical.
