TGDown is a Chrome extension listed in the Chrome Web Store for saving media from Telegram Web. Its publisher says it offers one-click saving, automatic media detection and batch downloads for videos and images, works with Telegram Web’s /a/ and /k/ versions, and requires Chrome 120 or later. Those are the publisher’s claims, not results from independent compatibility testing or a code audit. The privacy and rights questions matter as much as the feature list, so both are covered below.
What TGDown does, according to its listing
The Chrome Web Store listing describes TGDown as a tool for downloading media from Telegram Web. It advertises four capabilities: saving with one click, detecting media automatically, downloading several items in a batch, and handling both videos and images. Each of these is a claim made by the publisher. Telegram Web changes over time, so a feature that works today may behave differently after either side updates.

The rating and user count are useful as a rough signal of activity, but 93 ratings is a small sample and says little about how well the extension performs across different accounts, devices or Telegram Web updates. Store figures change, so check the live listing before you install.

Because the publisher’s claims have not been independently verified, a few checks before installation will tell you whether the extension fits your setup.

- Confirm your Chrome version. Open
chrome://settings/help. The listing requires Chrome 120 or later. If your browser is older, update it first. - Identify your Telegram Web variant. Look at the address bar while you are in Telegram Web. The listing names the
/a/and/k/paths. If you use a different address or a Telegram app, the listing’s compatibility claim does not describe your situation. - Read the listing’s update date and version. The listing shows version 1.1.7 with a September 23, 2026 update date. A recent update means the publisher has maintained the extension recently, but it does not guarantee that the code is safe or free of defects.
- Review the permissions before you click Add to Chrome. Chrome shows requested permissions in the install prompt. Compare what it asks for with what the feature requires. Details are covered in the next section.
- Check the privacy policy and terms. Both documents were last updated August 26, 2026. Read them on the publisher’s pages linked from the listing.
How downloads are handled and what the privacy policy says
TGDown’s privacy policy says that downloads take place locally in the browser, that files are saved to the device’s Downloads folder, and that downloaded media does not pass through TGDown’s servers. The Chrome Web Store listing also displays the developer’s declaration that the extension does not collect or use user data. These are the publisher’s statements. They describe how the extension is meant to work and do not amount to an independent review of its code or of what it does at runtime.
Why the local-processing claim matters
If a tool processes files on your own computer, your media does not need to be uploaded to a third party’s server to be saved. That is the main reason readers ask whether a download tool is private. It is a meaningful claim, but it is only as good as the publisher’s accuracy and the extension’s actual code. Neither the listing nor the policy describes an audit, and neither was found to name an outside reviewer.

What the permissions mean
Google’s guidance on extension permissions explains that website-data permissions may let an extension read, request, or modify data on the pages it can access. For a Telegram Web downloader, the question is whether the extension needs access to Telegram Web pages only, or to all sites. A narrow scope fits the stated feature; a broad scope asks for more trust than a Telegram Web downloader should need.

Chrome’s labels can change, so if the wording differs, look for the section that controls which websites the extension can read and change. Choose the most restrictive setting that still lets the extension work with Telegram Web. Google’s general guidance does not confirm which permissions TGDown actually requests, so the install prompt and this page are the places to verify them.

Rights, platform terms and responsible use
TGDown’s terms say the extension is not affiliated with or endorsed by Telegram. They also say users are responsible for downloading only media they have the legal right to access and save, and for respecting copyright, privacy, applicable law and Telegram’s terms.
A download button, or the technical ability to save a file, does not give you ownership of that file or permission to share it. A photo or video posted in a private chat, a group or a channel may be owned by someone else. Saving a copy for personal reference is a different question from reposting it, and the terms place that judgment on you.

Limits to keep in mind
- Claims are not tested results. The feature list, compatibility range and minimum Chrome version come from the listing. No independent compatibility test is stated.
- Privacy statements are not an audit. The local-processing and no-data-collection statements are disclosures by the publisher. They have not been checked against the extension’s code in any public source.
- Marketplace signals are small and time-bound. A 4.9 rating from 93 ratings, accessed October 7, 2026, is a snapshot of a small group of reviewers.
- Telegram Web changes can break features. Telegram may change its web client, and an extension may need an update to keep working. A listing that claims support for
/a/and/k/does not guarantee future compatibility. - Dates and versions move. The listing, policy and terms dates reflect the state of each document when it was checked. Recheck them before relying on the details.
How to compare TGDown with other Telegram Web download extensions
Several Chrome extensions target Telegram Web downloads, so it helps to compare them on the same criteria. Use these axes:
- Supported Telegram Web variants and media types, as stated in each listing.
- Permission scope shown during installation.
- Whether the publisher says processing is local or server-based, and where that statement appears.
- Batch and selection workflow, and whether the listing describes it clearly.
- Date of the most recent update and the version number.
- How specific the privacy policy and terms are about user responsibility and rights.
A separate Chrome Web Store listing for a different extension called Telegram Media Downloader advertises support for additional media types and Telegram Web variants. Those features belong to that extension and should be checked on its own listing; they are not features of TGDown.

Storage for large archives
TGDown saves files to the device’s Downloads folder, and ordinary use does not require any extra hardware. If you plan to keep a large offline archive of Telegram Web media, an external drive can be a convenient place to move files, but it is an optional accessory rather than a requirement of the extension.
Read the install prompt, the privacy policy and the terms together before you rely on TGDown for regular use. Each one answers a different question: what the extension can access, what the publisher says it does with your data, and what you are allowed to do with the files you save.
