Texting is one kind of messaging, while messaging is the broader term for communicating through a service or app. In everyday conversation, people often use “texting” for messages sent from a phone, including conversations carried by different services. The terms overlap; neither is a universal technical label.
What do “texting” and “messaging” mean?
Texting usually means sending text messages, especially from a phone. Messaging can mean that too, but it also covers conversations through other digital services and apps. So an SMS, RCS, or iMessage conversation may casually be called texting even though each uses a distinct service.
This is a useful everyday distinction, not a strict technical taxonomy. To identify how a particular conversation is handled, look at the service or protocol—not just the word someone uses for it.
How do SMS, MMS, RCS, and iMessage fit in?
SMS, MMS, RCS, and iMessage are service names, not synonyms for the Messages app. SMS stands for Short Message Service; MMS stands for Multimedia Messaging Service. RCS (Rich Communication Services) is another distinct service. Apple’s developer documentation lists SMS, MMS, and RCS as cellular messaging services, while its Messages app can carry those services as well as iMessage.

| Term | What it refers to | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| SMS | Short Message Service | A specific messaging service; it is commonly what people mean by a basic text message. |
| MMS | Multimedia Messaging Service | A specific service associated with multimedia messaging. |
| RCS | Rich Communication Services | A distinct service with capabilities that can include group chat, file transfers, and typing notifications. |
| iMessage | Apple’s messaging service | It is distinct from the Messages app, which can also use SMS, MMS, or RCS. |
| Messages | An app | The app name alone does not tell you which service handled a conversation. |
GSMA describes RCS as enhancing traditional SMS messaging with features such as group chat, file transfers, and typing notifications. Those capabilities do not mean every device, carrier, region, or conversation supports them. Availability depends on the setup on both ends.
How can you tell which service a conversation uses?
When the distinction matters, check the conversation’s service indicator or details in the app you use. The relevant questions are:

- Which service is shown? It may be SMS, MMS, RCS, iMessage, or another app-based service.
- What features are available? Multimedia, group chat, file transfers, or typing indicators can help describe a conversation’s capabilities, but do not by themselves establish universal support.
- Do both sides support it? The sender’s and recipient’s devices, apps, network, and region can affect availability.
Without those details, “texting” is a reasonable casual description, but it may not identify the underlying service.

Does “text message” have a legal definition?
Sometimes. In the cited U.S. provision, Title 47, § 227, the statutory definition of “text message” includes SMS and MMS. It excludes certain messages sent over an IP-enabled messaging service to another user of that same service. That is a definition for a specific U.S. statute, not a universal rule for everyday speech or laws in other jurisdictions.
