Per far crescere una <textarea> in base al testo senza aggiornarne l’altezza a ogni battuta, usa field-sizing: content e definisci limiti con min-block-size, max-block-size, min-inline-size e max-inline-size. Le unità lh e ch rendono questi limiti relativi alla tipografia: il campo parte da una dimensione leggibile, può allargarsi e poi aumentare in altezza quando il testo va a capo.
Come fare crescere una textarea con il contenuto
La proprietà CSS field-sizing accetta fixed e content; fixed è il valore iniziale. Impostando content, il browser adatta la dimensione preferita del controllo al suo contenuto. In una textarea, il campo può prima allargarsi; raggiunto il limite di larghezza, il testo va a capo e il campo cresce in altezza per mostrare altre righe. MDN documenta il comportamento e i limiti della proprietà, mentre Chrome for Developers mostra esempi pratici.

}Questi valori sono un punto di partenza illustrativo, non una combinazione universale. Scegli i limiti in base allo spazio disponibile e al tipo di testo atteso. Per esempio, un campo destinato a commenti brevi può richiedere un massimo inferiore rispetto a uno per messaggi lunghi.
Perché servono limiti minimi e massimi
Senza un limite minimo, il campo può restringersi a una dimensione poco pratica; senza un massimo, può occupare troppo spazio e spostare o coprire gli elementi vicini. Un limite di larghezza determina quando il testo inizia ad andare a capo; un limite di altezza stabilisce quando il campo smette di espandersi. Quando il contenuto supera le dimensioni massime, l’utente deve poter scorrere il testo all’interno del controllo.

Se vuoi che la dimensione resti flessibile, evita di imporre una width o una height fissa: può forzare il controllo a una misura rigida, contraria all’adattamento desiderato. I vincoli minimi e massimi, invece, delimitano la crescita senza annullarla.
Con field-sizing: content, gli attributi HTML rows e cols non determinano più la dimensione preferita della textarea. Non usarli come metodo principale per dimensionare il campo in questa modalità. La documentazione MDN sull’elemento textarea specifica inoltre che, se omesso, rows ha un valore predefinito di due righe.

Come usare lh e ch al posto di misure arbitrarie
lh per l’altezza
lh è un’unità relativa all’altezza di riga dell’elemento. Un valore come 3.5lh esprime quindi un limite legato alla tipografia, invece di una quantità fissa di pixel: se cambia la line-height calcolata, cambia anche la dimensione corrispondente. La misura effettiva dipende comunque da quella line-height e dal moltiplicatore scelto. MDN descrive le unità e i valori CSS.
ch per la larghezza
ch è un’unità relativa alle metriche dei caratteri e può essere utile per definire una larghezza approssimativa in termini tipografici, per esempio 20ch come limite minimo e 50ch come massimo. Non equivale a una garanzia sul numero esatto di caratteri visualizzabili: il risultato dipende dal font e dal contenuto.

Le unità relative rendono esplicita l’intenzione progettuale e possono seguire i cambiamenti tipografici, ma non uniformano da sole l’aspetto dei controlli nativi tra browser, font o livelli di zoom.
Come mantenere la textarea accessibile e pratica
- Associa il campo a una descrizione significativa tramite un elemento
<label>. Il placeholder può dare un esempio o un suggerimento, ma non sostituisce l’etichetta. - Decidi se mantenere la maniglia di ridimensionamento manuale: le textarea sono ridimensionabili nella maggior parte dei browser. Se l’interazione non è adatta al layout, imposta la proprietà
resizecon una scelta intenzionale, invece di rimuovere automaticamente un controllo utile. - Prova testi brevi e lunghi, il superamento dei limiti e la navigazione da tastiera. Quando si raggiunge il massimo, verifica che il contenuto eccedente resti raggiungibile tramite scorrimento.
Supporto browser e fallback
Al 9 ottobre 2026, MDN indica field-sizing come Baseline 2026, disponibile in modo interoperabile nei browser e dispositivi più recenti da giugno 2026. La tabella di compatibilità della pagina MDN riporta Chrome ed Edge dalla versione 123, Firefox dalla 152 e Safari dalla 26.2. I browser meno recenti possono non supportare la proprietà; il dato non garantisce il comportamento in ogni dispositivo o webview incorporata.

La dichiarazione non supportata viene ignorata, quindi la textarea deve restare utilizzabile anche senza di essa. Mantieni uno stile di base con una dimensione iniziale leggibile e verifica la matrice di browser effettivamente richiesta dal progetto. Non fare affidamento su rows e cols come limiti dimensionali quando il browser applica field-sizing: content.
