Text messaging usually means carrier-based SMS or MMS sent to a phone number; instant messaging usually means internet-based chat through an app or service. The line is not always visible: a single phone’s Messages app can send SMS/MMS, RCS, or iMessage depending on the recipient, device, carrier, and settings.

What is the difference between text messaging and instant messaging?

The simplest distinction is the route the message takes. SMS and MMS use carrier messaging services and are commonly addressed to phone numbers. Instant messaging generally uses an internet connection and an app or service, often addressing people through that service’s accounts or identities.

These are useful everyday definitions, not universal legal categories. The U.S. federal definition of a text message includes text, images, sounds, or other information sent to or from a device identified by a 10-digit telephone number or N11 service code. It includes SMS and MMS, while excluding real-time two-way voice or video and certain messages sent through an IP-enabled service to another user of that same service (47 U.S.C. § 227). That statutory definition applies in the United States; it should not be treated as a worldwide definition.

In a 2019 rule, the FCC explained that the same-service IP exclusion covers non-SMS/MMS messages sent through services such as iMessage, WhatsApp, and Skype to users of those same services (Federal Communications Commission, 2019). In ordinary conversation, people may still call a message in one of those apps a “text.”

How do SMS, MMS, RCS, and iMessage fit in?

“Text messaging” and “instant messaging” describe broad types of communication. SMS, MMS, RCS, and iMessage are specific technologies or services, and a messaging app may use more than one of them.

Type How it is generally sent What to know
SMS Carrier messaging service, commonly to a phone number Short Message Service; a basic carrier-based text message.
MMS Carrier messaging service, commonly to a phone number Multimedia Messaging Service; supports images and other media. SMS and MMS are included in the cited U.S. statutory definition of text message.
RCS Carrier-provided messaging using an internet-connected, carrier-supported service Rich Communication Services is an industry standard for carrier messaging. It can support richer media and features such as read receipts when devices and providers support them.
iMessage Apple’s internet-based messaging service Uses Wi-Fi or mobile data and supports features such as read receipts and typing indicators. It is distinct from SMS/MMS and RCS.

Apple says its Messages app can send through iMessage, RCS, or SMS/MMS, depending on the conversation and support available. Google’s Messages guidance says that when the compose bar reads “Text message,” the message will be sent by the carrier as SMS/MMS (Google Messages Help). Check the app’s message details or status indicators when the exact type matters; the app name alone does not identify the underlying service.

Is texting the same as instant messaging?

Not exactly. In common use, “texting” can mean sending any short written message on a phone, including a chat in an internet app. More narrowly, text messaging means carrier-based SMS or MMS. Instant messaging is the broader term for real-time or near-real-time chat through an internet service.

That difference matters when you are asking about a legal definition, compatibility, features, or encryption. For everyday conversation, people may use “text” loosely; for technical or legal questions, identify the actual service or message type.

Is WhatsApp considered text messaging?

WhatsApp is generally considered an internet-based instant messaging service, not SMS or MMS. Under the FCC’s cited U.S. interpretation, messages sent through WhatsApp to another WhatsApp user are within the same-service IP messaging exclusion from the statutory text-message definition. That is a U.S. regulatory interpretation, not a universal rule for how everyone uses the phrase “text messaging.”

Why a phone’s messaging app can make the distinction confusing

A default messaging app is an interface, not a guarantee that every message uses the same transport. Apple’s Messages app can switch among iMessage, RCS, and SMS/MMS according to the recipient, settings, and provider support. Google Messages can likewise handle RCS and carrier SMS/MMS.

  • A phone number does not prove SMS. A message addressed to a phone number may use a richer service such as RCS or iMessage.
  • A green bubble does not mean SMS. On Apple devices, both RCS and SMS/MMS can appear green; bubble color is not a reliable technical label.
  • Features depend on compatibility. Read receipts, typing indicators, and richer media may be available only when the relevant service, device, and provider support them.

Does the message type affect privacy?

It can. Apple states that SMS/MMS messages are not end-to-end encrypted, while iMessage conversations are end-to-end encrypted. RCS encryption depends on supported software, providers, and the particular conversation; look for an explicit encryption indicator rather than assuming that every RCS message is protected (Apple Support: About iMessage, RCS, and SMS/MMS; Apple Platform Security).

On May 11, 2026, Apple announced that end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging had begun rolling out in beta for supported configurations: iPhones running iOS 26.5 with supported carriers and Android users on the latest Google Messages. This is a dated, support-dependent beta rollout announcement—not evidence that all RCS messages are encrypted on every device or network (Apple Newsroom).

How to identify what kind of message you are sending

  1. Check the conversation’s service label or status. In Google Messages, the compose bar can indicate “Text message” for carrier SMS/MMS. In Apple Messages, the conversation may use iMessage, RCS, or SMS/MMS depending on availability.
  2. Check the feature or security indicator you care about. If encryption matters, confirm the explicit encrypted status for that conversation. Do not infer it from the app name, the recipient’s phone number, or bubble color.
  3. Consider both ends of the conversation. Device software, carrier support, service settings, and the other person’s messaging setup can affect which route and features are available.
