Text Marker Plus is an independently maintained VS Code extension derived from Text Marker. Its publisher says the fork removes telemetry, moves full-document matching to a worker, and adds more control over where highlight rules are saved. Those are project claims, not independently verified security or performance findings.

What Text Marker Plus changes

The original Text Marker project provides configurable text highlighting. Text Marker Plus keeps that core purpose and describes itself as a separate distribution based on the upstream project. According to its Marketplace listing, the fork adds or changes the following:

  • Full-document matching in a dedicated worker, with completed matches cached.
  • Visible editor regions highlighted first, followed by matches elsewhere as they complete asynchronously.
  • Refreshes for visible editor panes, including split panes, and handling for stale asynchronous results.
  • Workspace, global, or prompted choices for saving rules, plus an optional save-on-toggle setting.
  • User-configurable colors and a different default accent palette.
  • Removal of the upstream telemetry functionality.

These details are statements from the Plus listing; they are not a code audit or independent test. Its demo includes an intentional five-second pause to make the staged highlighting sequence visible. The listing says that pause is not normal runtime latency, so it should not be treated as a measurement of matching speed.

How highlighting and matching work

The underlying Text Marker feature set lets you highlight or unhighlight selected text or the word under the cursor, edit highlight rules, navigate to the next or previous match, and configure colors. The upstream README also documents regular-expression matching, case sensitivity, and whole-word versus partial matching.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Text Marker Plus describes matching as a two-stage process: it highlights the visible editor region first, then completes the search elsewhere asynchronously. That approach is intended to show useful results in the region currently on screen while other matches are being processed. The listing also says the extension caches completed matches and refreshes visible panes, including split views. The available product materials do not establish an independently measured speed advantage or comparative reliability.

Where highlight rules are saved

The fork stores rules in the textmarker.savedHighlights setting. Its listing documents textmarker.defaultSaveTarget for choosing workspace settings, global settings, or a prompt asking where to save. Workspace is the documented default. If no workspace is open while workspace saving is selected, the extension says it prompts rather than silently writing the rules to global settings.

The optional textmarker.autoSaveOnToggle setting saves all current rules when the Toggle Highlight command adds or removes a rule. This is useful if you want changes made during editing to persist without separately updating the saved rules; leave it off if you prefer to decide when to save.

What the telemetry statements establish

The Plus Marketplace listing says the upstream telemetry functionality was removed and that Text Marker Plus does not collect information. This is the publisher’s description, not an independent inspection of the extension’s code or network traffic.

The upstream README describes a different behavior for its project: usage data is sent only when both textmarker.enableTelemetry and VS Code’s telemetry.enableTelemetry are true; the README says its own telemetry setting is enabled by default. These are project-documentation statements and should not be conflated with the Plus listing’s claim about the fork.

Text Marker Plus compared with upstream Text Marker

Area Text Marker Plus Upstream Text Marker
Matching approach Listing describes worker-based full-document matching, visible-region-first highlighting, asynchronous completion, and cached matches. README describes string and regex highlighting, case sensitivity, whole/partial matching, and navigation between matches.
Saving rules Listing documents workspace, global, or prompted save targets, plus optional save-on-toggle. README documents saved highlights for later editor sessions; the reviewed documentation does not state equivalent save-target choices.
Telemetry Listing says telemetry functionality was removed and the extension does not collect information. README says usage data is sent only when both the extension’s telemetry setting and VS Code’s telemetry setting are enabled.

For a separate option, the Word Highlighter listing describes whole-word matching for the word under the cursor, substring matching for selections, and workspace persistence. This feature information supports a comparison of behavior, not a hands-on ranking of quality or speed.

How to choose a text highlighter

Start with what you need to match and how you want rules to persist. These are the most useful questions to check in an extension’s current listing or documentation:

  • Cursor word: Does it highlight whole-word occurrences, or also substrings inside longer words?
  • Selection: Does selecting text create an exact-text rule?
  • Advanced patterns: Does it support regex, and can you control case sensitivity and whole-word versus partial matching?
  • Persistence: Are rules saved at all? If so, are they per workspace, global, or both?
  • Save control: Does the extension save automatically, ask where to save, or require a separate save action?
  • Maintenance and privacy: What does the publisher currently say about maintenance and data collection? Treat those statements as claims unless independently verified.

Text Marker Plus is a plausible fit if you want the upstream Text Marker workflow with the fork’s documented save-target choices and staged matching behavior. If your main need is a specific cursor-word or selection-matching rule, compare the exact behavior in each extension’s documentation rather than assuming that all highlighters treat text the same way.
