1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUpdate test cases when the behavior, requirements, dependencies, risks, or known failure modes they cover change—not on an arbitrary calendar. Choose a design technique by the kind of behavior and coverage you need: input partitions and boundaries, combinations of rules, state changes, code structure, or risks that call for tester exploration.
When should you update test cases?
Review the affected cases whenever a meaningful change could make their assumptions, steps, data, or expected results inaccurate. A review does not mean rewriting every test; it means checking whether the changed behavior or its consequences are still adequately covered.
Changes that should trigger an impact review
- Requirements, acceptance criteria, or business rules have changed.
- An interface, workflow, input constraint, or data format has changed.
- Code or a dependency has changed in a way that could affect behavior.
- A defect, production incident, or newly discovered edge case reveals a missing or ineffective test.
- The impact or likelihood of failure has changed, or the regulatory context now calls for different evidence.
These are practical prompts for review, not an exhaustive checklist mandated by a standard. The reason to act is that a case is only useful while its test basis and assumptions remain relevant.
Revise the affected cases
- Identify the changed requirement, risk, interface, rule, or component, and find the cases that depend on it.
- Check that each affected case still traces to a current requirement or risk. Remove obsolete steps and update setup and test data.
- Change expected results to match the current specified behavior. Add cases for changed behavior, uncovered boundaries, and gaps exposed by defects or incidents.
- Run the cases that verify the modification, then select regression tests for potentially affected areas that were not meant to change.
Retesting and regression testing have different purposes: retesting checks whether a specific modification works; regression testing checks whether a change has unintentionally affected other parts of the system. ISO/IEC/IEEE 29119-4:2021 distinguishes these concepts in its terminology (ISO catalog entry).

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Is there a required review interval?
No universal case-update interval is established by the sources cited here. A team can schedule periodic suite reviews as a practical safeguard, but a fixed cadence should not replace change-driven impact review: cases can become stale as soon as their assumptions change.
Which test design technique should you use?
Start with the test basis you have and the coverage item or risk you need to address. ISO defines a test design technique as a procedure used to create or select a test model, identify coverage items, and derive corresponding test cases. The standard’s published second edition, ISO/IEC/IEEE 29119-4:2021, covers test techniques for the test design and implementation process (ISO/IEC/IEEE 29119-4:2021).

Black-box techniques derive tests from specified behavior; white-box techniques use internal structure. Experience-based techniques draw on tester knowledge and complement the other families. No one technique is universally best or sufficient for every system.
| Situation or coverage goal | Technique to consider | What it helps you cover |
|---|---|---|
| Many possible input values are expected to be handled similarly | Equivalence partitioning | Representative values from groups expected to receive similar treatment. |
| Failures are plausible at the edges of valid or invalid input ranges | Boundary value analysis | Values at or near the boundaries between input partitions. |
| An outcome depends on combinations of conditions or business rules | Decision-table testing | Relevant combinations of conditions and their expected outcomes. |
| Behavior depends on the current state and an event | State-transition testing | States, events, and the transitions between states. |
| You need coverage of code paths or decisions and internal structure is available | Structural testing | Selected elements of implementation structure, such as paths or decisions. |
| Specifications or structural coverage may leave plausible gaps | Experience-based exploration, checklists, or error guessing | Risks and failure ideas informed by tester knowledge and experience. |
Use techniques in combination when the risk warrants it. For example, equivalence partitions can reduce a large input space to representative cases, while boundary analysis focuses attention on edges within that space. NIST’s developer verification guideline also recommends multiple complementary approaches, including black-box and structural cases, historical cases, fuzzing, and security-focused methods (NIST SP 800-160, Volume 1, Revision 1).

A practical selection check
- Test basis: Are you working from requirements, decision rules, a state model, or source structure?
- Risk: What is the impact if this behavior fails, and which failure modes are plausible?
- Coverage item: Do you need to exercise representative inputs, boundaries, combinations, transitions, paths, or security conditions?
- Knowledge: What can the specification and structure show, and where would tester experience help?
How to keep the suite useful after a change
Keep case maintenance tied to traceability and risk rather than treating test cases as permanent scripts. When a requirement or risk changes, revise the linked cases; when a defect exposes a gap, add a case that captures the failure condition so it can be checked again. A clear expected result makes it possible to distinguish a genuine failure from a test whose assumptions no longer hold.
For larger changes, choose regression tests based on the parts of the system that could have been affected, not merely the changed files. The exact regression set depends on the change and system; the cited guidance supports complementary verification methods rather than a universal selection formula.
