The Tesla Model Y L is a longer, six-seat Model Y with three rows. Compared with Tesla’s five-seat Model Y Premium, it adds two seats, a third row and more length—but leaves less cargo room behind the seats when everyone is aboard. Here are the five differences that matter, using Tesla’s owner’s manual specifications.

1. The Model Y L seats six in three rows

The Model Y L has two front seats, two second-row seats and two third-row seats. The five-seat Model Y Premium has only two rows. That extra row is the defining difference: the L is designed to carry up to six people, rather than simply offering a larger version of the same five-seat layout.

Tesla’s manual provides measurements for all three Model Y L rows, while its five-seat Premium specifications cover the first and second rows. A child safety seat is a relevant consideration, but the manual does not establish that a particular child seat fits a specific Model Y L position. Check the vehicle’s instructions and the child-seat manufacturer’s fit and installation requirements.

2. It is longer, with a longer wheelbase

Tesla’s Model Y Owner’s Manual lists the Model Y L as 179 mm longer overall and with a 150 mm longer wheelbase than the five-seat Model Y Premium. The L is also taller. These are manufacturer specifications; Tesla notes that dimensions are approximate and can vary with options and other factors.

Overall length 4,797 mm 4,976 mm
Wheelbase 2,890 mm 3,040 mm
Overall height 1,624 mm 1,668 mm

For a driver, the extra length matters when checking garage clearance, parking spaces and maneuvering room. Measure the space you actually use rather than relying only on the vehicle’s published length.

3. The third row has less measured room than the second

Tesla lists Model Y L third-row headroom at 967 mm and legroom at 788 mm. For comparison, its second-row figures are 1,064 mm of headroom and 1,009 mm of legroom. Those measurements show the difference between rows, but they do not establish that the third row will suit every passenger or journey.

Rank #2

If you are considering the L for regular passengers, evaluate the seating positions and access in person where the vehicle is available. The measurements alone cannot answer whether a particular passenger will find the row suitable.

4. Cargo space changes substantially with the seat configuration

The Model Y L has 420 L of cargo space behind the third row when all seats are in use. Folding the third row increases the listed space behind the second row to 1,076 L; folding both rear rows gives 2,423 L behind the first row. Tesla also lists 536 L as maximum total cargo volume with six passengers.

Seating configuration Listed cargo volume
Six passengers; cargo behind the third row 420 L
Third row folded; cargo behind the second row 1,076 L
Second and third rows folded; cargo behind the first row 2,423 L
Maximum total cargo with six passengers 536 L

The five-seat Model Y Premium has 822 L behind its second row with its five-seat layout in use. That is not a like-for-like comparison with the L’s 420 L behind its third row: the L carries one additional passenger in a row farther back. Compare cargo figures only when the seat configuration is clear.

5. Availability and other specifications depend on your market

Tesla’s China design page includes the Model Y L, and Tesla’s international Model Y page describes its three-row, six-seat layout. Those pages do not establish a definitive country-by-country order list. Check your local Tesla order page for current availability and the specifications offered in your market.

The sources do not provide a consistent, same-market comparison of range, battery, charging or price between the Model Y L and five-seat Model Y Premium. Avoid drawing a direct conclusion on those points without comparing the same market, configuration and test cycle using current local listings.
